Hi all,
The Hare Krishna chant that I have mentioned in Msg. 24/25 of the "Hindu Folklore" thread
is very precious to all Vaishnavas as well as Bengalis.
A movie "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" due to have been released across India on October 12, 2007 has a grossly vulgar depiction of that tradition.

Thank you.

Bhool bhulaiya movie - some trailers
Hi all,
Those that have not seen or do not wish to see the movie, here are some sites, which provide an idea:

a Trailer, with several useful links.
Do you think that those semi-nude women shaking their posteriors represent the spirit of Vaishnava beliefs?
Do you think that the young man in Saffron robe or his behaviour towards the scantily clad young woman represent the actions of a typical Vaishnava ?
Regards.

For the uninitiated can you explain what the tradition is? I would love to know....
For the uninitiated can you explain what the tradition is? I would love to know....
Hi Jason,
I cannot, for I am uninitiated, too.
Love is a human emotion that I try to observe dispassionately, analyse but cannot synthesise, describe the effects of but cannot explain. It simply does not compute!
I just cannot reduce it to a matrix of equations or factors and then rotate them using a suitable tool. So this will be an unsatisfactory explanation. Perhaps worthy posters like Oakapple, for example, who actually does attend Vaishnava events might be in a better position!
I did narrate a story that I thought illustrates the principle of Vaishnavism well. That was in msgs 24/25 of this thread
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" https://www.healthypages.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=47486&page=2 "> https://www.healthypages.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=47486&page=2
To save time, I shall cite those Vaishnava sites that provide the necessary info. most accurately and succinctly.
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaishnavism "> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaishnavism
This gives an overview, but is not detailed enough in any specific school.
This site describes its most brilliant exponent, Madhva
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhvacharya "> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhvacharya
In recent times, by far the most brilliant even outstanding exponent was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. See:
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaitanya_Mahaprabhu#Chaitanya.27s_tradition "> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaitanya_Mahaprabhu#Chaitanya.27s_tradition
And his philosophy here:
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achintya_Bheda_Abheda "> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achintya_Bheda_Abheda
and his tradition here:
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaudiya_Vaishnavism#Devotional_activities "> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaudiya_Vaishnavism#Devotional_activities
This last one is probably what you are looking for.
Even this is not quite indicative. The very best indication comes from Chaitanya's life, described here:
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://www.dlshq.org/saints/gauranga.htm "> http://www.dlshq.org/saints/gauranga.htm
Just take this example, from his boyhood and logic:
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://www.dlshq.org/saints/gauranga.htm#boyhood "> http://www.dlshq.org/saints/gauranga.htm#boyhood
Chaitanya's treatise on logic (nyaya) would have been by far the most brilliant and inspired work in that field. And he through it away, simply out of love for Raghunath.
Just how many scholars would sacrifice so much?
Valuing logic as I do, that to me is the most supreme sacrifice (and a loss from my selfish point of view) of all!
I have no words to describe it!
I shall conclude by indicating what I find most offensive about this film:
Saffron Robe- The colour Saffron represents reninciation to ALL Hindus and Buddhists. Renunciation specifically from sensual and sexual pleasures.
The scenes of saffron robed young men indicate the opposite!
The chant and the dance- is one of selfless love. The kind indicated by Chaitanya's discarding of his treatise on Nyaya. and illustrated in all the many episodes of Chaitanya's life. The Jagai-Madhai episode illustrates.
The provocative sensual dancing in the film suggest the opposite.
The musical (aural) background is one of discord, not the harmony and love that Vaishnavism represents.
Regards.

Thanks for taking the time to post those links it will give me a good start i shall enjoy reading them 🙂
i can't help but feel that to "ban" something sends the wrong message (censorship). Ideally, i think the best way to respond to any sort of exhibition that one does not hold in personal favor - is to avoid it. If the movie doesn't make money - similar movies wouldn't be made again.
I think public education is good - in letting people know our feelings and why we feel a certain way - bearing in mind that the very same public education is also free publicity for the very exhibit that one is trying to admonish.
But that having been said, plead one's case, provide logic and reason for one's thought - and let the chips fall where they may - but banning/censorship - i don't agree with that.
