She seems to be the "hot" guru, as I hear her name quite a bit lately. Can anyone "enlighten" us on the subject?

Dear Nopatterns

Her reputation precedes her and when I saw her energy on her website it was the first time a modern day indian touched my heart and soul even more so then Mother Meera.

I truly feel that this lady is 100% genuine and I would love to meet her in fact I think that Sunanda is probably the one to speak to in this regard.

love beyond measure

being love

RE: Tell us about Amma

Well, well, well....synchronicity once more!:) I have just typed the word 'Amma' on another thread of yours NP, and mentioned that She is coming to Crystal Palace on 12th - 14th October.

I first met Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi) in June 1996 following my first visit to India in January of that year. There I had experienced a spiritual 'awakening' and had heard of Amma and seen Her photo for the first time. Although I could have had Her 'darshan' (met Her face to face and received one of Her famous hugs) there and then, instead I returned to England 'knowing' that I would meet Her somehow. (I didn't even know She came to England.) About three weeks later, She was on a Lonely Planet travel programme on TV and then I learned (in a most mysterious way!) that She was coming to London. Well, I had my first hug - and was hooked....In December of that year I visited Her ashram in Kerala for the first time - and have been going back every year.

Amma was born 50 years ago (Her 50th birthday celebrations last year were HUGE) in a small fishing village in the backwaters of Kerala, to a very poor family. As She grew Her family thought She was crazy as She was only interested in God - firstly in Krishna and then the Divine Mother - and She would go into samadhi (holy trance) and not do Her chores. Her mother and father beat Her and eventually threw Her out of the house. But the villagers loved Her and to cut a long story short She started to attract devotees. She would dance in the aspect of God (ie She would become God - or even more Godlike than She already was!) and started to hug people. Her family was horrified - young Indian girls are certainly not permitted to have physical contact with unrelated men - and Her brother led a movement against Her (the Rationalists) and even tried to kill Her.
Of course He didn't succeed, and Amma started to attract Western followers - and they started to build the present ashram. (This was about 25 years ago.) Nowadays She has thousands upon thousands of devotees and travels the world through much of the year, dispensing Her trademark hugs. She has been known to sit for 19 hours at a time, hugging everyone who comes to Her, whispering in one's ear, sometimes rubbing one's back or kissing one's cheek, sometimes offering a word of advice or encouragement.

Some of Her followers are full time residents of the Indian ashram, or one of the American ones, some are 'part time' devotees (like me.) For me, it doesn't seem so important now to spend time at the ashram - and I have to admit that I find it difficult as it is now so big and crowded: buttons easily get pushed! But Amma's ability to teach at a remove is remarkable - and nothing that happens around Her happens by chance!

I could go on and on...but feel this post is long enough for now. I suggest you visit - and if you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to try and answer them.

Om namah Shivaya!

Lots of love

Thanks Sunnanda,

How wonderful for you to have met this special lady and been hugged!
Our lives are never the same after we have been touched (spiritually) by someone who so clearly reflects God's qualities.

To me, she sounds like what Mary Baker Eddy describes as a clear transparency for Truth (God)

The manifestation of God through mortals is as light passing through the window-pane. The light and the glass never mingle, but as matter, the glass is less opaque than the walls. The mortal mind through which Truth appears most vividly is that one which has lost much materiality--much error--in order to become a better transparency for Truth. Then, like a cloud melting into thin vapor, it no longer hides the sun. (Science and Health p 295)

Love and peace,

Judy

Dear Judy
Yes, that's it exactly. Amma and others like Her (and there are many others) have an inner radiance which cannot be hidden, and which enriches all who come into contact with Her.

Jai Ma Kali Ma!

Namaste Sam

How lovely to make contact with you. I have been lucky enough to spend a lot of time around Amma at Her ashram in India. This year I am staying in England long enough to go to Her programme at Crystal Palace (12th -14th October.) Maybe I will see you there.

Om namah Shivaya!

Much love
