Hello friends,

Those of us who live in the UK have a treat in store!

I was listening to an interview with Tony Jordan - one of the scriptwriters of Eastenders, who has written this, being faithful to the gospel stories, but wanting to bring the story to life, from the perspective of the shepherds (who represent all of us). It's in 3 half-hour parts, the Mary and Joseph relationship, the wise men and the shepherds. On BBC 1 at 7pm from Monday December 20 to Thursday December 23

A friend of mine was at the preview and has written this review in his blog - complete with links to other articles, interviews and a short video clip. Here's the link if anyone would like to read it:

Maybe we can come back here on Monday night and discuss the programme?

Love and peace,

Judy

Well, what did you all think?

My 'orrible husband tried his best to ruin it for me, "Look, there's the mother from Larkrise', "Look, there's Wycliffe" etc. 😡

It comes over to me as fresh and real, but I wish they'd kept more to historical facts. There's no way that a young Jewish couple would have been allowed to lark around like that without the girl being chaperoned, in those days (not even in these days with some orthodox families!)

I also got the feeling that I already know the ending, so there will be no surprises, but I think I'm going to really enjoy it, so long as I can get him indoors to go away! 😉

Oh yes, I think I've given the wrong info too - I thought it was a 3-part, but it seems it's 4-part.

Love and peace,

Judy

I'm just looking to see when it is on, and I've missed it!

I'll catch up with it later, if it is repeated.

Glad you enjoyed it Judy.

The Nativity BBC 1

Great to see the media offering some good quality, thought provoking, Christian content.

Yes, we know how the story ends (and we may recognise some of the cast), but its purpose surely is to make us think about how the characters may have interacted with each other and to God's plan and it leads us to consider how we respond to situations in our own lives.

If you missed it you can see it on

A promising start to the weeks viewing. Still to come this week are:

  • Mary is visited by the Angel Gabriel, and she learns she will bear the son of God.
  • Joseph cannot accept Mary's explanation for her pregnancy, and her neighbours turn on her.
  • As Mary goes into labour, Joseph must find somewhere for her to give birth.

🙂

I enjoyed it but i agree with Principled that they wouldn't be allowed to mess around unchaperoned.

I sent the link above to my friend's review of the programmes (he saw the whole lot and was very moved) to a friend in Australia, in case they were getting it too. her reply today was interesting:

...it got a mention in the free newspaper we get on the trains in Melbourne. *Whenever I pick up this rag, I always soon regret it (and turn quickly back to my Bible Lesson), but I was really disgusted - though not surprised - by this one. The article begins: "The Virgin Mary was an 'adulterous whore' who became pregnant after she 'had a few too many glasses of wine and ended up in bed with someone', according to a British TV version of the Nativity."

It does actually indicate, several paragraphs later, that these quotes are merely what other characters in the drama (including Joseph, at first)*say about Mary as they find out about her mysterious pregnancy. *But that's not the impression that would stay with the average reader. *(And, unlike Tony's review, there's no mention of Mary "cherishing, and taking a stand for, her own purity and piety in a world where these are choices." *They're not choices that sell too well to a popular audience, after all.)

I'm looking forward to tonight's episode.

Love and peace,

Judy

We have no BBC television here in Berkshire tonight, but I watched it on my computer and am really getting into it. The characters and story are all feeling so real.

During an interview, Tony Jordan, the scriptwriter said he was an agnostic when he was asked to write the script, but now he believes it all really happened - isn't that wonderful that he's been blessed too?

I hope everyone on HP had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed The Nativity! Sorry I haven't been back sooner (was rather hoping some others would comment having watched it too) but have been rather occupied.

For anyone who missed it, here's the link to the 4 programmes:

I enjoyed it very much, but no way as much as I do reading the story from the Bible. Did I miss it, or did the 3 Magi not go to Herod on their way to Jesus?

It was lovely the way the series brought the people so much to life and made it all feel very real and true and I hope that it will encourage some people at least to pick up a Bible and read the accounts for themselves (especially the beginning of Luke's gospel) and from Matthew 1:16.

I thought you might a glimpse of Mary Baker Eddy's perspective on the birth of Jesus too:

[COLOR="Blue"]
Jesus was the son of a virgin. He was appointed to speak God's word and to appear to mortals in such a form of humanity as they could understand as well as perceive. Mary's conception of him was spiritual, for only purity could reflect Truth and Love, which were plainly incarnate in the good and pure Christ Jesus. He expressed the highest type of divinity, which a fleshly form could express in that age. Into the real and ideal man the fleshly element cannot enter. Thus it is that Christ illustrates the coincidence, or spiritual agreement, between God and man in His image. (Science and Health 332)

The illumination of Mary's spiritual sense put to silence material law and its order of generation, and brought forth her child by the revelation of Truth, demonstrating God as the Father of men. The Holy Ghost, or divine Spirit, overshadowed the pure sense of the Virgin-mother with the full recognition that being is Spirit. The Christ dwelt forever an idea in the bosom of God, the divine Principle of the man Jesus, and woman perceived this spiritual idea, though at first faintly developed. (Science and Health 29)

Love and peace,

Judy
