Hiya

No they're not the same thing. Jehovah's Witnesses are not a Christian sect. Seventh Day Adventists are Christian, but they celebrate the Sabbath on Friday night, just as the Jews do.

They are both "Christian" cults that were invented (or grew up, emerged, arose - however you like to put it) in the USA (where else?) in the 19th century - i.e. they are relatively recent in religious terms. Seventh Day Adventists (or just "Adventists"), came first, and the Jehovah's Witnesses seem to have developed from them, but are now more extreme. The main points about the Adventists are: they celebrate the Sabbath on a Saturday, and they are vegetarian. You can look both of them up on Wikipedia if you are interested in the details of their doctrine etc.

The big difference between JWs and SDAs is there view of Jesus.

JWs believe that Jesus was a man who was once spirit, and although he is the son of God, he is distinct and different from God the Father.

On the other hand,

SDAs believe in the Deity of Jesus, that he is part of the Godhead, equal and the same as God the Father.

I hope that clarifies?

Well fine but a little curiosity works wonders! If you feel sure of yourself, next time they knock then tell them you'd like to tell them your religious beliefs - and watch them run!

(no kidding - hubby did this once!)

That is only fair, an equal exchange of views. But for some reason people don't like talking on my doorstep.

However, this is an inclusive forum and we should make JWs SDAs feel welcome on HP too.

I can see your point Myarka about letting other religions welcome too thats fair, but is it fair for them to visit me every so often when I have told them i am not interested and that I have already got faith etc... that was years ago i now just shut the door on them the first time i did I felt awful as could see the man looking hurt, but now I have had enough I just say Jehovahs witness? if reply is yes I just slam the door sorry jws but ......

I'm not saying you're wrong for shutting the door, my thought was more about this thread and thinking what I'd feel like if I was a JW or SDA reading it.

As far as I'm concerned anyone who comes to my door to peddle their religion must hear mine in exchange because I have as much right to my faith as they have to theirs. But if I'm busy, which happens a lot then I send them away, with a smile of course.

BTW do JWs work for nPower as well?.

Jehovah's Witnesses

The husband of a woman I knew once flummoxed a door-knocking JW by saying: "Come on in, explain the book of Revelation to me". The JW had to scurry away to confer with his superiors, but a day or two later he was back with the official JW explanation. Afterwards, my friend said, he was touchingly humble and grateful because, apparantly, simply by getting someone to listen to him, he had earned brownie points towards his place in the Kingdom.

Unfortunately if you show any interest at all, they will keep coming back. There is no need to be rude to them, just ask: "Are you Jehovah's Witnesses?" They have to say "yes", they cannot deny the name of Jehovah, so you say "In that case, I'm not interested, thank you", and that should be that.

JW, when they knock on doors, work to a pre-determined address list, the area is allocated to their congregation. Show any interest and they will be back and back and back again.

Therefore if one knocks and you are not interested ask them to make a note on their list that this household is not interested, please do not call again.

You then may get a visit once a year and say the same thing but they are only checking their list as you may have moved over the last 12 months.

No need to be rude, as children are often present or not far away, if they persist on calling, just ask where their church is situated and then contact one of the elders of the church and explain the situation. Often the persistent callers are new convertees and very enthusiastic, these people are often keen to promote their new life and dont quite see it the same way as other people.

In the past I've had many conversations with JW's (close family and friends are active members) but if you feel uncomfortable with the person, family, children that are on your doorstep contact the elders of the church and explain why you feel the need to tell them.

Tell them you are "born again". Then tell them your birth date. In other words, be light about it - but don't expect them to easily go away. Frankly you have to tell them to quite often.

In the lyrics from the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, which go like this, (in a song about constipation):

[COLOR="Blue"]Two Jehovah's Witness' come knocking at my door,
I try to tell them kindly but they still come back for more,
Straining, I'm not complaining...
