Going to NYC for 3 nights in October - anyone got any recommendations or personal experience of 'affordable' accommodation? Can't quite run to the Waldorf Astoria (mores the pity!) There will be 4 adults travelling, so two rooms - we are all too large (tall!) for 'suites' with 1 bed and a sofa bed!! Anyone got any experience of B&B's in the city?

Sorry, I can't help there, but maybe it's not too different to Boston? That's also a sizeable East Coast city. Doing my own online search, I found that if you don't mind being on the outskirts, Boston had some superb B & Bs, affordable. Due to the cultural difference, the rooms were gigantic compared to what we in the UK call a B & B. And you really were accepted in as if part of the family. We didn't even get given a front door key, as it was such a peaceful place, they would leave the house empty and not lock the door!

However that's Boston. Obviously NY is bigger. Maybe you could let us know on this thread, for future use, what you come up with?

Oh, BTW in Boston as we were arriving late, I booked the first night in the central YMCA (takes both genders). It was actually within walking distance of (if Judy reads this) the international Christian Science HQ. But it was pretty dreadful TBH. Cheap for Boston, but the B & Bs were great at around the same price.

I've not been to NT, Jabba, but if I ever do go I intend to use the free 'greeters' - volunteer New Yorkers who will show you around for free. Here's the website:

Have a great time.

Hi Jabba

I've been to New York twice, staying in budget, and mid-price hotels.

The Herald square hotel is budget - it's cute, very botiquey, bit funky, and not that pricey. It's clean, functional, though the rooms and bathrooms are slightly small. It's also in mid-town, so was a great spot for sight-seeing. No B&B, but there was a great Brooklyn Bagel cafe at the end of the street for breakfast, so I'd recommend it.

Have also stayed at Hotel Metro, but as this time was taking my mum for a treat paid a little more money, & having just looked at the website, it looks a bit steep, but may be worth checking out. It was a great location, right on top of Broadway/times square/Macy's, and it was 'nice' - they had continental breakfast, hair salon, rooms were bigger etc, although think you get more of a feel for the city going out for breakfast. Just to note, I found it quite difficult to find B&B, and at the cheaper end of hotels, it was even harder.

It's worth staying in midtown if you can, particularly if your time is limited, as this puts right in the zone for Empire State, 5th Avenue, the main stops for the bus tours (if you're not a bus tour snob? I'm not, I love them is the easiest way to get your bearings, and hop on and off.

Best of luck with your search, and enjoy come October. How exciting 😀

El
