I don't know about you but I like to find new places to go in the UK instead of going abroad every year. As there are a lot of HP members spread out across the UK, maybe it would be helpful to hear what different areas have to offer for sight seeing/visiting etc.

I live near Chester, Cheshire. It has a cathedral, city walls that you can walk, great shopping, trips on the river, fantastic zoo, museums, art galleries and it's less than an hour from North Wales.

what a good idea

In east Lancashire, there are lots of great walks near Pendle Hill, plenty of Mill shops like oswaldtwistle mills, nice market town at Skipton and the ancient castle to visit (that is really creepy:eek:), and then in Manchester City centre plenty of museums either free or low rates such as the science museum (although a few years since I was in there), and in Cheshire there is the lovely Tatton Park and gardens

I agree there is plenty this country has to offer without going abroad (and spreading our carbon footprint unnecessarily). I fell in love with Red Wharf Bay, Angelsey and Mid-Wales (Welshpool/Newtown area).
Also, I work in Burnley so know the sights fleur mentions (would give Manchester a big miss though - sorry fleur!)

If you venture into Liverpool St Georges hall is now open to the public including the cells and court. It's a beautiful building, well worth a visit if you're in the area

There's an AA book called "Days Out" which covers all areas of the UK.

Mind you, it's good but since it covers all the UK, it's not comprehensive. I thought, "Only mentioned two or three things in this whole area?!"

Well I live in Newcastle upon the Tyne (ok V you had a bad experience with the food) but hey it's a big place. Anyway we have the Metro Centre 15 mins away, one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe. Really fab honestly!! We have Durham about an hour away, beautiful cathedral city really pretty and very quaint. (love Durham) We have the Angel of the North (funny looking landmark of an angel with aeroplane wings) The Millennium Bridge (the winking eye) the best nightlife in the world (yeah! it's true)
We have Newcastle united (love em or hate em??) Newcastle Brown Ale (love that or hate it too?) Fabulous beaches (bit cold but lovely) Northumberland coast just 30 min away (really beautiful) and it also has Lil ol me so it can't be all that bad eh?

There's more but i'm boring everyone now!!

I live in Perthshire which is advertised by the local tourist board as "the big tree county". There are lots of good walks, including the walk to the hermitage in Dunkeld. Dunkeld although small also has a lovely Cathedral and a music bar which was owned by Dougie McLean and still has regular folk sessions. It also has a contemporary Arts centre and the Beatrix Potter garden (she used to holiday outside Dunkeld and that is why Mr McGregor the gardener is so called.) The last picture is the lovely village of Kenmore on the banks of Loch Tay, where I grew up. Not much night life unless you count star gazing but beautiful scenery :>)

We run a B&B near Aylesbury, Buckingshire. Seems to attract people from as far as Australia who come for Midsummer Murder locations which are plentify, also to walk the Ridgeway and see the Chilterns. Several cool National Trust properties like Waddesdon Manor. Some come for the massage. Nobody has yet come to see the Aylesbury Ducks, I am not sure why...
