When I did my ITEC/VTCT Holistic Therapies course a few years ago, it only touched on Hand reflexology concentrating mainly on foot reflexology. I would now like to expand on HR and wondered if it is worth doing and certified course or is it something you 'progress' into through reading books and practising?
Dear oldiebutgoodie
It depends how you learn best whether to do a 'hands on' course or whether to learn from books but it is well worth doing.
I use hand reflexology alot it's amazing for 'first aid', taster sessions, self treatment, children and showing people basic routines they can do on themselves and of course if someone has an injured foot and you can't work on that.
I worked on a colleages hand outside the x-ray department at the hospital when she broke her foot - she was amazed at how little pain she felt and how calm she was.

Oldiebutgoody,
I recommend London School of Reflexology's one day hand reflexology course run by Louise Keet. I learnt reflexology with Louise and we covered hands during the course.
It also depends how much you feel you may use it. Take a look at some books and you'll see how much the hand reflects the feet and that reflex points are in a very similar position, however the areas are smaller and don't require as much stimulation. If after looking through some books, you still feel you would like to know much then go on a one day course.
Hope this helps.

The only problem with that suggestion is that Oldiebutgoody is in Rotherham 🙂
Google 'Hand reflexology' and CPD and you should hopefully be able to find a list of accredited 1 day courses nearer to you.
Mike
Thanks everyone
Hiya. Thanks to you all, your answers are really helpful. One of the things I was thinking about was offering hand reflexology to residents of care homes as it is something that can be done in a short space of time without the client having to remove tights/socks etc. I guess it would almost be like a 'taster' session for them. I would be interested to hear if any of you have done this at any time and if it was well received.
Hi oldie
I've used hand massage/hand reflexology in homes and hospices, and it is a useful skill. Not every body likes their feet touched. For the qualified (foot) reflexologist, a one day hand reflex CPD course is all you need to gain confidence. The elderly in particular have hand problems and also often a lack of touch. What a wonderful way to be caring!
Also for younger people, RSI is common, so hand work is ideal for them. Clients of mine are really happy when I add the hands & wrists into a whole body massage routine. RSI and CTS reduces or even disappear. Got to be better than pain killers.
Best Wishes

MikeOc - distance is no barrier, we had someone from Holland on the course and next month am doing a workshop where a student is coming from Jersey 🙂
Oldie - yes, I've used it in a similar setting. I volunteered on a rehabilitation ward for about 6 months. The patients there were recovering from heart attacks, strokes, major surgery and it went down very well.

Normal reflexology course has already included hand reflexology. My trading was 11 month and I had
