Hi fellow weekenders!
I realise there aren't too many people around on this lovely Saturday afternoon so I don't mind waiting for an answer till next week, but maybe someone here now can help me.
I would like to download photos from my mobile phone to my laptop. I've found the cable and connected everything, also found the disc to enable the laptop to install the drivers. I've restarted the computer, plugged in the mobile again and nothing happens. I can't locate it as an external device on the 'computer' list. The only thing that shows as containing removable storage is the DVD drive and when I click on that it asks me to insert a disk. 😎 A couple of years ago, when I got the phone I did manage to download a few photos to my old laptop but it proved such a hassle I've never tried again till now...and I've forgotten how I did it.
Can anyone help?

It depends on the make of your mobile phone, most will have their own software drivers to allow to to connect.

If you are using a phone runing on windows mobile, then you need to run ActiveSync.

I did the same on my mobile phone, expected it to start off when plugged in like a USB memory stick then my daughter told me what to do!!

In my case, I have to run the software first without having the phone plugged in. This will install everything you need, and you should have new programs installed as well. I thought that mine was never going to finish! It also said that Microsoft advised against installing these things because the certificates weren't signed .... yes, clicked ok to that cos it's a respected manufacturer .. my decision though! It then went through an update process which meant that it took another half hour or so ...

Click on new program and open it up. Then you can plug in the phone to the computer! You might already have the program installed, in which case open it up and get to to update before plugging the phone in.

After all that, I now have 1 ringtone on my phone .... !!

hi sunanda,

you have vista, dont you. i'd hazard a guess, if your phone is a couple of years old, it wont run on vista and you may not be able to find updated drivers on the web for it.

i cant use my phone on my new pc... not that it matters much seeing as the camera bit is broken anyway! but, i had a couple of pix i wanted to get off the phone and i hunted high and low for drivers, to no avail.

i've been considering a new phone...

Well, I haven't just been idly waiting for HPers to provide the info. I have been trying this and trying that.
Having installed the software from the CD that came with the phone I discovered that I shouldn't have had the phone plugged into the laptop throughout but I did. I can't find the new driver software anywhere in All programs so decided to instal again. This time I was told that a newer version (?) was already installed. However, not being able to find it, I can't open it. Also the CD does indeed specify that it's for Windows 2000 and Windows XP and yes, I have Vista now. I did hope though that the new lappy might be clever enough to do something nifty and convert but it would seem not. I remember trying the Bluetooth dongle on the old laptop when I first got the phone but it wouldn't work - it had on the previous phone. So either the phone is too clever or not clever enough. Likewise the laptop. Meanwhile I would love to see my pix full size rather 2cm x 1.5cm!!! A new phone? But that's no good for these photos! Ah me, ah my. What to do?

What to do?

Hi Sunanda,

I can't help you until I know the make and model of your phone.

I've PM'd you, but starting out thinking I could help, realised not.

My off-topic comment (not to start a whole sub-thred here) is that the constant upgrades can be such a pain. I've got Vista, like some of it, but vital (to me) software won't run on it; so it's spoiled my online ability. Also bought the MS Office 2007, and it's utterly different. I can see that long-term it's more logical and better, but I'm basically learning a whole new softwear kit. Anyway, sorry, it's turning into a mini-rant :p , but what a pain if this is due to Vista...

Hi David. Thanks anyway. BTW how much did the MS Office 2007 cost? I ask because I'm coming to the end of my free trial and I can't make up my mind whether to buy it or not. Basically it would be worth more to me if I could make head or tail of it!

Myarka, thank you in advance. You are the main man! It's a Samsung U600.

You can get the vista drivers from here:
[DLMURL] http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/download/supportDown.do?group=&type=mobilephones&subtype=slide&model_nm=SGH-U600&disp_nm=SGH-U600&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=SW&vType=&prd_ia_cd=01011800&model_cd=&menu=download [/DLMURL]

and MS Office 2007 Home & Student edition is about £60.

Ooh. I paid the cheapest normal going rate, is all I remember. I looked around and there was wide variation! I seem to recall I got it for £60 roughly, the Office/Home/Student edition. Online you do find higher prices. This was back in about last October, see. Online I found such variation, really, but in the end, by chance, I was buying a laptop in a trusted local shop and saw they had it for I think £60. I could check with them or find the receipt maybe.

Don't be put-off by this, but I got to a point where it was saying I needed an update. When I went online to get the update, I received a message that my copy was bogus - it works but is pirated. By then it was December, and I went back to the store. They are truly honest people and said that they just receive them in good faith from a wholesaler. Anyway, it all still works but without updates, and researching online I found that fully 10% of all MS Office packages are pirate copies - package, reg. no., the lot. I was too busy to follow up so have just left it as is without being an irate customer - can't be bothered - but around £60 was a going rate anyway as I recall. (P.S. Talking of copies, did you know about 10% of £1 coins are too??)

On MS Office 2007, it'll be better for future generations as it's more logical, but I regret buying it and wish I had an older one. If you use Office for a few hours a day you'd master this within days or a week or two. But I rarely use it, so it's all double-dutch as to where to find functions. I had to write a good-looking letter two days ago and could hardly figure it out....

Oh dear. I tried your link, Myarka, and was downloading the thingy when my com;puter had a nervous breakdown and said it had encountered a major error and had to shut itself down. I'm a bit too scared to try again right now. Maybe later. Thanks anyway.

Hi Sunanda, I've had a similar problem since having Vista. My phone is a Motorola and used to connect to the computer fine but now when I connect my phone, the software is loaded and working but the options for downloading my pictures isn't there. My phone is only 9 months old so it isn't that that's the problem. Flippin' updates and upgrades are a right pain in the .... sometimes.:(

(They say some people are opposed to 'change' - ha, wonder why)!

I'm very resistant to change. That's one of the things I'd put on the negative attributes thread if I was going to put anything there!
I tried the Bluetooth dongle BTW (what a name! LOL) but that didn't work either though it made me download a driver. I've given up now. What I wanted to do was to upload some pix of my garden which is looking so good now compared to last year when it was half bare.

Do you have a memory card in your phone that you can put the pics on (if currently on internal memory) and then use a card reader?

Or if all else fails -send them to someone with a phone that can connect and download them for you and then email them to you?

I don't have a memory card in the phone. I've never emailed a photo before but I could certainly try that if all else fails. I've emailed Samsung to ask if they can help. I paid for a year's free tech help for the laptop and that includes software problems. (Actually this is a great help - I phone a number and then get phoned back by one of a number of nice young men in South Africa who can actually take over my screen and do things for me if needed.) So I may give them a try when I get some new energy for it.

Blimey, I've only done it, haven't I? Honestly, the sense of achievement is terrific! My only grouch is that my new 'Windows Gallery' (thanks to Microsoft Office 2007! See above.) won't save photos which have been rotated. With that in mind I shall now upload a couple of 'landscape' shaped pix on the Spring thread so you can say nice things about my little garden!!!

Well done!

For myself, I'm delighted to report that my mobile has no camera or facility for downloading anything whatsoever:p.

It is quite good for phone-calls though:D.

For photos I prefer to use film and a 70-year old Leica.
I did have an Olympus digital camera some time back, but it broke....

Hi David

I had my camera stolen last winter - hate taking pix with the mobile because I don't know how to work it properly, very hit and miss. But to have successfully uploaded them AND to have finally cracked the rotation thing too leaves me with a warm positive glow!
