Hi fellow Somerseter's! I am very proud to hear that my town of Wellington is bidding to become a 'Food Town' i.e known for it's local produce/restaurants.
The organiser's have arranged a big event for Sat 2nd Dec at 10am in the car park at the Conservative Club in High Street (in Marquee's lol!). I think they are hoping to get some well-known local chef's to give demonstrations of recipes etc. FREE FOOD TASTING!

So, if you are in the area come along and see what Wellington has to offer.

Ouch, I'm so sorry! I feel like one of those Londoners who has simply bought a second house here. I don't know where the place is - SORRY! - and will have to look it up on a map. Meantime, feel welcome to visit Frome? 😉

LOL Venetian! You are forgiven! I look forward to visiting Frome at some point, thanks for the invitation!

It's so funny, you know. The locals can't understand why anyone should want to move here but when you point out all the things that go on etc they are amazed as they are not aware of them! I feel like an ambassador for this town for it's own residents lol.

LOL. Do you get the same reaction that i do? If I walk into a cafe or pub, everyone picks up that I don't have a Somerset accent. :DIt's like Clint Eastwood walking into a wild west bar! Or at least it was like that - the last 6 months there have been so many Poles and Londoners moving here that the locals are starting to get used to it.

Ooh, Reikiangel, thanks for posting ... marked in diary already. I'll go a long way for free food and it's only about 12 miles as the crow flies. 😀 I know what you mean about the food in this area ... I am a happy frequenter of several farm shops for fresh local and organic produce.

Venetian, here's a map of Somerset for you:

Click on any of the towns’ little white squares for road map.

Nobody has ever commented on my accent ... or perhaps I should say lack of ... though one or two locals have corrected my pronunciation of some village names. Maybe Frome is further off the beaten track (main trunk route) than Ilminster.

Thinking back to the SW meet up of HPers in Bath, which was <gasp> TWO years ago almost to the date, I am wondering if perhaps we could make this "do" in Wellington into something of a mini-meet up if others are interested?

Reikiangel, what do you think? We can always give the title of this thread a tiny tweak, and I could post a reference in General Discussions if you like, to make more people aware. You might have to tell the good folk of Wellington though, if hoards of hungry HPers are going to descend on the town like gannets, so they can get in extra supplies. :D:D

Laura, yes,

It is a local thing re accents. Most people have grown up here and they know if you are from out of town.

But now I am joining in! There's a huge influx of people from Eastern Europe

At least from this thread I've learned where Wellington is! I do know Honiton just south of it.

Now it's my turn to own up Venetian lol! I have no idea where Honiton is! I know Rockwell Green (a bit), Runnington, Greenham (that's where the cat is going for Christmas, there's a very nice cattery there!). and of course Taunton. New Year's resolution - visit more places lol!

Sorry you can't join us on Sat Trin but I think there are a few events planned next year to continue on this theme of Wellington becoming a known Food Town. I KNEW I moved here for a reason and there's me thinking it was a spiritual one LOL!

RE: HP meet up at Wellington 'food town'

well,

I have been to the event and it is heaving with people, so if anyof them was anyone from HP thanks for coming lol! I'm glad I was walking there as I could sample a lot of the local ciders etc. I have sat and watched a cookery demonstration by one of the well-known local chef's and had a chance to sample the sea bass dish he cooked with local produce. It was great that as he used ingrediants he told us from which supplier in the main marquee they had come from. I also got to taste (and buy!) some lovely strong rum icecream, a homemade cornish pasty and a green beeswax candle which is burning at this moment to attract prosperity to me lol! There was so much to see, taste and buy and if today's event was anything to go by then Wellington has a very good chance of becoming the West's Food Town and will be having other events next year to continue the promotion.
I have gone in for a prize of a hamper of locul goodies, so fingeras crossed!

Love and light (and a little bit tipsy!!)

So you guys didn't actually meet? 😉

On the subject of food, I just saw a photo of Jaime Oliver on the front of today's Mail. Looks like he's been enjoying his consumption as well as the cooking! [:-]

No, unfortunately, I had to change my plans. I rang Reikiangel last night so she knew not to expect me. It sounds like she had a good feast though! 😉

RE: HP meet up at Wellington 'food town'

Well,

According to the local press the event was a spectacular success!! Over 5,000 people attended and the local produce people took £100,000 on the day, WOW!. Apparently people came from Bristol,Devon and even further afield which bodes well for the campaign. Guess what? I have volunteered to be part of the localorganisation arranging all this as they were asking for volunteers lol! What do I get myself into?!

So, I shall keep you all informed on what's coming up in the next few years in our bid to be 'Food Town' of the South West. Watch this space lol!

RE: HP meet up at Wellington 'food town'

P.S. There was a little news story I enjoyed a couple of days ago, but I forget which local paper it was in, and I forget which town or village it was about in the SW. Apparently it was a pretty rare event of either KFC or Burger King or such setting up a joint in this place, and over quite a period the locals just didn't go there. They say their own local food is too good. The fast-food outlet closed down and left. 😉

LOL Venetian! I only plan to help promote Wellington, not to eat my way through it! I think that's great that the locals supported their local produce rather than the 'fast food chain', good for them!

Would you believe it's nearly time for the Food Festival again! It's being held on the 5/6th July. This time though, instead of in the centre of Wellington it is being held at Wellington School in the grounds in a big marquee. There will be park and ride from Chelston roundabout to Longforth carpark and then people will be able to walk through the centre of Wellington and see our local shops before getting to the event.
For my sins I have volunteered to help out on the Saturday lol! I did enjoy being one of the 'meet and greet' people last year but not sure what I have let myself in for this year!
So, a big invitation to all HPer's in the South West to come along (that includes you Holistic and Venetion!).

Hi!

Hi Reikiangel

I'm just sending you a posting to wish you all the best for the HP Meet up!

Unfortunately I'm booked up for that weekend but I would have loved to come otherwise!

I'm in Devon, do you know if there is a HP group that meets up in my county (or can I gatecrash yours from time to time)?

All the best!

Hello CreditonJulesand thanks for replying! As yet a Somerset meet-up hasn't happened so you haven't missed out on anything but who knows, we might get something going one day lol.
As I live so close to the Devon border I have been given permission to 'hop' over if anything is going on for HP members there so I'm sure you can 'come over' to the wild side!

Keep in touch
