Myself and my fiancee are seriously considering the possiblilty of starting a New Age store in York city centre. We would sell candle, oil buriners, oils, dreamcatchers, statues, books on the occult, angels, and paganism and general pagan fare.

After a recent trip to York we found the bits of competition didnt offer all that we would and did offer some items we would. We would also consider offering treatments such as reiki and possibly tarot readings as a side-line part of the business.

We both feel the business would be sucessful but does any one else in the area feel that as you know the location better than me? We chose York because its historic nature and number of small businesses it has.

Hi Shadowskin

I dont live in York. But I have been to itONCE on holiday.I loved it. I am sure your buisness would do very well there.I think offering reiki and tarot card readings is also a good idea.

We have a lovely shop in Bournemouth that do this. They also offer other therapies, readings etc. It is so a lovely. It is only small shopbut the atmosphere in the shop is great. It has some really lots of nice bits and pieces. It also has its own web site.Good customer service. It must be doing well as it has just opened another one.I am sure you are making the right decision.Good luck

RE: Business venture

whoooooooooooo expensive location ! But, you probably know the area well, my friends took a shop in Edwinstow Nottingham, but instead of signing up to a lease straight off they ask to take it on license ( i'm too sure what that involves) but it was a fail safe measure, as much as they were positive of mind etc, they also had to make sure they had a get out of jail card without it costing a fortune card, should things not keep going, She is a Natural Medium and he a Reiki Master, however she has MS so they needed that fail-safe measure. The thing they did as well was have taster days, where other therapists came in for the day to give 15 minute tasters at a small cost that was donated to MS society,it lets other therapists know where you are and you can make a deal to let your room for a fiver a treatment when clients book them through your shop. To get the shop noticed she contacted a freelance journalist who did a free spread in local paper, if you can find an angle to use, i.e Haunted Shop get's someone else to talk to ( lol or somart) There's plenty of scope in York love. Basically though if you give people plenty of variety, choice of readers too is good idea, and Development groups too.
Good Luck from West Yorkie.Lyn x

York has lost a couple of this type of shops lately
One is going strong and another is getting on by
And there is a quite big alternative treatments centre near the centre of York

But I only visit there around six times a year (York that is)

But they have a big student population

I have a shop in York city centre and also know already of 5 shops that you describe you want to set up ,all in the city centre, 1 run by very good friends of myne, I also have a lot of people wanting to advertise their alternate therapy businesses they have in York.

Maybe try Harrogate area, that is a wealthy area, the rent for buildings/shops is about the same if not slightly more affordable there.

Good luck and keep us updated with your progress.

I live in Harrogate, but go to York fairly often for my Pagan group and to visit my son who is attending uni there. What shops are currently in York and where? I walk around sometimes, but haven't seen any. Thanks.

Hi top2toe,

Thank you for the link. I hadn't thought to search for "new age".
I will give these a look. I'm also looking for shops that carry aromatherapy supplies. I am aware of Culpeppers, but would like to give other venues a look-see.
