You are invited to a big free dinner party in Trafalgar Square on Wednesday 16th December between 12-2pm. 'Feeding the 5000' hopes to feed 5000 people on the delicious food that is usually considered the wrong size or shape to get to our supermarket shelves. Just turn up and tuck in!
We will also be giving away free groceries, as many fresh fruit and veg as you can carry, so bring a bag!
The above reached me through the Freeconomy site (
Just wanted to bump this up as it's taking place tomorrow. I have volunteered to help and will be there in a tabard!!! If you come, bring an empty bag or two as there will be free food to take away.

How cool! I'd love to be there but sadly have to be at a prior engagement with work - boo hoo.
Have a good day.
Btw, just tried your link and it doesn't work. I think the link should be .

Thanks, Sarah. Shame you can't make it.
If I were in London I would come Sunanda! Wishing you the very best and hope you enjoy. What a wonderful idea.
Love Rachel x
I haven't had internet access for a while (long story), so I've only just seen this post - which is a shame. It sounds like a great idea, if I'd known about it sooner I'd have volunteered to help. How did you get to know about it, Sunanda?
It sounds like a fab idea,,, I would love to be able to see it all and I hope you have a fantastic day Sunanda.
So, is the food that is being used, normally thrown away?
Hi again
I just got back - I was giving out leaflets in front of the National Gallery, fetchingly dressed in one of those luminescent yellow tabards (always wanted to wear one of those!) telling people where to line up for their free veggie curry. It was super but I only lasted an hour cos the cold got to my fingers (Raynauds!) and I had to go and thaw out in Waterstones.
I heard about this, Ellensdottir, through the freeconomy organisation as I said in my first post. And yes, Flit, the food would have been thrown away because the veggies etc were not of a regular enough shape for the supermarkets etc.
Anyway, it was indeed a great idea.

Just clocked this video clip on the Guardian , are you on it Sunanda?:)
No, they didn't spot me!
This event has just been broadcast on Country file....you were well and truly hiding Sunanda. Didn't spot you anywhere:D.
The programme did a bit of research on just how much food is wasted by supermarkets, and farmers, and thrown away. Supermarkets, decline mishaped or inapproprately sized produce. A perfectly good and too large cauliflower was in the reject pile at the farmer's yard. And purple broccoli would be rejected because the stems were too thick or too thin. Surely they can go to farmers shops......
Fussy consumer's fault? or not?
