hello everyone[sm=nature-smiley-008.gif]

i have two staffordshire bull terriers.

1 girl black and white who is5 months old and a boy brindle whos now 2 years, we dont breed them ,she is now spaded.
we just love the breeds as we find they are perfect ,devoted family pets, excellent around children.and have had dogs in the past.

but in the news you get an incident where a dog has bitten a person, and notice that they always mention the dogs breed in the cases where a staffy is involved.(often the dog is tormented in some way,or a poorly trained dog)
but any other dog the breed is not mentioned hardly if an incident happened.

i feel that its themedia scaremongering, profiling with the added poor upbringing of these dogs and of course those whom fight them for cruelsport/moneythat gives these dogs a bad name.
yes they are a very strong dog, full of tight muscles but with a lovable nature, thats why they can be bred for fightihg as the owners can get them dominated young to have the dog fear them then force them to fight.[sm=nono.gif]

like any dog, bring them up wrong and train them to be nasty, then they will act like that.

as i walk my dogs .people cross over(not all but enough to make youknow their thoughts)and others come up and stroke them as they wag their tails lovingly.,and people who have dogs see mine then cross over to the other side.
my dogs are attractive, and the boy is from show dog family.

i think that my experience with this breed is the fact that they are lovable, great with kids, very friendly, and a protector over the family as a natural dog instinct.[sm=busch.gif]

just wanted to have amoan as to the media profiling of these dogs[sm=jump2.gif]what do others think of this breed [sm=scratchchin.gif]

Hi,

Could't agree more, my 2 boys have passed on now but we had 1 staffies cross and 1 american pit bull cross, we never dared tell anybody that blue was american pit bull cross because of the fear that he would be taken off us, they have both died during the last 12 months and both we aged over 16.

We had 1 from a baby and our other dog from when he was about 6.

They were the most lovely dogs you could ever know, very boisterous and needed a lot of strong handling but the most danger they ever were to anybody was knocking you over.

They were always around children and loved to be rocked like babies.

People would cross roads, even tut at them, if we took them to a local park where dogs run free and let them off so many people commented that they should be on a lead, even though their own dogs were free.

We miss them so much.

I'm not an advocate of the breeding of dangerous dog breeds, but its all down to owner responsibility.

Enjoy them, they are great

Love Saffron

Yep, that's about right. I have three staffies crossed with border collies, they are built like staffies and look like them in the face. I have had pure breed staffies before too. They have all been lovely dogs when it came to humans although some have been very aggressive toward other dogs.

Staffies do tend to be sought after dogs by people who want them for different purposes, for street cred and protection. For instance there are many drug dealers where I live and staffies seem to be the dog of choice for protection, so they have obviously been trained to be aggressive.

My Partners Mother had the misfortune last week of seeing her cat mauled and killed by a staffie, as you can imagine, it was horriffic and she was very traumatised by this. The dog was allowed to be walked by two very small children who had no control over it and were unable to keep hold of the lead.

Donna.

Hi all,

Just wanted to say that some years ago I spent 9 months working in a vets surgery in London. It was around the time that the dangerous dog act was coming in and all pit bulls were having to be spayed and chipped etc. We had a guy that used to come who rescued fighting pit bulls ~ these poor lovely dogs were covered in scars, their ears were ripped to bits, they had eyes missing and were generally in a terrible state ~ but what lovely good natured dogs they were ~ after all they had been through all they wanted to do was wag their tails and lick you to bits !!!

Staffies and the like are not aggresive dogs its just that if they do go ~ normally because of the awful way they are treated ~ their jaws lock and because of this they cando far more damage !!

I wasonly ever bittenby small "toy" dogs and cats, when I worked in the vets and never by the larger more powerful dogs !!

If a dog behaves badly, or is aggresive, it's because of the human owner who has taught or allowed them to behave like this !!

My son Collin has 2 American Pit Bulls -- Sin and Mercy. They are the loveliest, sweetest natured ladies you'd ever want to meet. Well, they sometimes go at eachother roughly, but not at people! They are big coddledbabies.

Here too people are afraid. All you can do is show by example and therefore educate I think. Best of luck, J

They are lovely dogs.....we have always had rescue ones form the dogs home and have only had problems with a couple of them, this was because of how they had been treated by their previous owners unfortunately.I think it is the owners that turn these dogs into something they are not natured to be like with humans.

My staffordshire is nearly 8 now
i think they are great dogs, great with kids, great with bitches or pups but i need to keep him on leash near other dogs as he is very dominant.
His name is Buddha and his kennel club name is Loyal Cassius, he is fine example of the breed with broad powerful shoulders and a large head like a labrador.
but they are very smelly dogs, ive heard recently the breed should be taken regulary for colonic irrigation, can any1 tell me if this is true?
it seems no matter what u feed them they break wind constantly..lol

RE: what do you think of staffordshire bull terriers ?

oh yes !, i can understand what you mean when refering to your dog breaking wind.
mine do to!
but i feel that you have to be a little more noticable as to what they eat.I have found this mainly with staffs.
if you keep them on one type of food that seems right for them, then this wind is not so bad.

its mainly at night,or when they sleep or stretching ,little noises come from them.[sm=speechless-smiley-040.gif]
Its quite funny really as they look around to see where the noise came from ![sm=rollaugh.gif]
Often makes them jump to ![sm=rollaugh.gif]

but i found that sticking to one food that suits ,works ok, dog treats dont go down so well either in the gas department.or the odd little chicken bits etc dont agree

Staffy's do tend to sweat easily, therefore having that sweaty smell ,after a good run or play fighting together.

but they are worth it.

I walk 2 staffies, different owners, both bitches and to begin with I had had no experience of the breed and some misgivings, but I think they are lovely. I also do a lunchtime comfort stop for one and she is similar in ways that matter too. BUT, the owners all care greatly for their dogs, and all 3 have been to obedience.

With the 'fighting' breeds people really do have to set limits, and with all dogs remember they are actually real animals and should be treated accordingly.

Its the owners every time who make the trouble and ruin the dogs

RE: what do you think of staffordshire bull terriers ?

Yeah ive learned that over the years sacrel, and it can be minimised by keeping him on butchers tripe,(worse 1 is pedigree chum,u cant be in same room as him...lol)
Its hard to keep control over what he might find outside though and he still gets chocolate treats (cant really stop now bro), but as iv said I was told recently by a staffordshire breeder that the breed should be taken to the vets to have colonic irrigation at least once a year and my boy is nearly 8 so if its true hes long overdue and i was wondering if any other owners had been advised of this

As for these dogs temperament, its not even up for question.
how good they are with kids and in fact all humans is well known, but its a sad fact that with the wrong owner they can be a powerful weapon, but this is true with all breeds.

My boy has been raised with kids, i trust him totallynot only with my own kids but with any kids he's near, but his powerful frame and confidentstrut still puts fear in the eyes ofpeople who dont know him, even if my 10 year old daughter is holding the leash...lol

Peoples opinion of the breed sucks but as ive read earlier in this forum....all you can do is lead by example.

THERE ARE NO BAD DOGS, ONLY BAD OWNERS

No thanks.

They may well be lovable little babies at home but the breed is renowned for disliking other dogs and I would avoid walking near one whilst out with my dog.

Oh thats' true enough Orange Blossom, I do get a lot of negativity from other people when I'm walking the girls, and I notice it a lot asI also walk 2 goldies and apart from the 'mud'art they have a good press, and yet one to one, they are just as affectionate.

RE: what do you think of staffordshire bull terriers ?

hi
orangeblossom

the only problem i had with other dogs ,was that when my dogs were on leads in public places( as the law states), i used to find other dogs that were not on leads and would come up to them.
often the other dogs would try to create a fight ,were mine are not interested.
but end up giving them a good old growl ,to send them away.then the other owner would say "typical staffs",when their dog started it.

i find that mine are not usually that bothered with other dogsand are quite happy going their own way.
but again i feel that if the dogs were brought up properly, then they would respect other dogs and people ,but that goes for any type of dog,i suppose, its how you bring them up.
also it is in a dogs natural instinct to defend itself, so if others come up to them whom should be on leads try to create a fight, then my dogs have no option but to naturally defend themselves.its in every dogs nature.

i feel that you may have come across a poor example, and havent been trained well.i too have noticed this in the ownership showing no proper training
its a shame that the small minority create a bad larger picture for others.[&o]

they are lovable things really, dont believe all the media hype

blessings:D

Hello Sacrel,

I hope your vent has made you feel better love.
If it's any consolation the media used to do this scaremongering thing with German Shepheards and Dobermans years ago then it moved on to Rotties and that stayed around for a good long while. I think the reason (or one of them) that the media bangs on so much about Staffies is because there are more of them, with this 'yob culture' thing going on, young people buy them in my area thinking it makes them 'dead 'ard' lol.
I train dogs and I'm in the throws of learning canine psychology and can say with confidence that a Staffy is no more likely to be aggressive than any other breed, they don't know they are Staffies they haven't a clue they think they are wolves like all breeds do including my beloved Saint Bernard.

Give your doggies and big scratch for me.

Kind Regards

Rebecca xxxx

My dog (Collie X) was attacked and it really was unprovoked. We were walking past a house when this dog came flying out of the garden onto the pavement and straight for my guy. Opened his leg up about 2" so that it had to bein a splintuntil it healed. The owners excuse was that the dog was hot and tired which is why she was bad tempered! I went back to tell him how much it had cost me and he just shrugged it off. This was many years ago when I was too young to argue much.

BTW the big vicious dog doing the attacking,Staffie? Rottie, Doberman? NO ......... a labrador.

Pam - Don't blame 'em. Train 'em.

I have a beautiful little staff called Dotty, 6yrs now and my best friend. She is full of life and fun adores my grandchildren, I have never heard her even warn my grandchildren that they have gone to far in their play and I only allow them to be with her when I am in the room aswell, just in case!
I have just come to realise that I am allergic to animals, my breathing is very difficult and have awful headaches, more when visiting friends that have lots of pets..........they have always commented on me taking pain killers, and 'just popping out to take a little air'....just shows how stupid I am.........that it never clicked !! [&o]
You can imagine how sad I feel....always having beloved doggies in my life
Can anyone give me any ideas what I can do please, apart from the obvious.

Many thanks 🙁

One of my goldies got attacked by another goldie, whichwas really strange. After a few months I found out the attacking dog had been p.t.s as a brain tumour had been found.

RE: what do you think of staffordshire bull terriers ?

Hiya all!
As a youngster (from 11 years) we had a staffy bitch. when she was about 18 months we had another staffy (dog). They were both pedigrees and both really loving (more so the dog than the bitch -she seemed to be a bit grumpy at times!) altho they had to be watched closely with other dogs-but they were well trained (to leave other dogs alone on the field).

Sometimes the bitch would fight with the dog (usually if I started play fighting with the dog..protection?) but that was it really.
My parents had to give the dogs away to a good home when I was about 16. Theykept in touch with the people who took them but one day they got a call to say that a small dog had found its way into their garden and the owner, not realising had let them out. They torn it apart. My mom was soooo upset..

Interestingly enough when I was 3 we had a border collie and he was more impatient with me and my brother than the staffies! He was always snarling at us to be left alone!

Hi i have worked as a veterinary nurse for the past ten years, so as you can imagine i have met a fair few breeds!! i can't remeber ever dealing with a nasty staffy! half the time they just want to jump on you and lick you to death, they are very loyal dogs, as are most of the bull terrier breeds, they can be a bit funny with other dogs but i belive that is more dog to socialisation and what the owners have done.
i've met more aggressive golden retrievers and yorkshire terriers!!

Hypnorm, sadly there have been so much puppy farm damage to goldie reputation, but there are breeders out there trying to rectify the damage both physical and emotional.
I have two goldies, one is a PAT dog the other was shown and the gentlest of dogs and just so loving and affectionate to allcomers.

Most Yorkies ? the problems originate the other end of the lead.....

I agree, its not the dogs its the owners. It depends on how the dog has been treated, socialised with other dogs, animals and humans!

Hi,

I own a staffy, she is around 8 years old, l am not sure of her real age as she is rescued, before getting a staffy l have to admit l was abit wary of this breed of dog but that is out the window now as my little jessa is the most gentle caring loving dog you could wish to own, she had a bad life till i took her on, she has an awful skin disease that her previous owners could not be bothered to treat and she was left in her basket 24/7, she was also smacked alot but not anymore, l have had her for 4 odd years and she runs away from cats she is that soft, l love her to bits and l have to say even with her having a rotten life it never turned her bad, it's not the dog that causes problems it's the owner, because of her previous owner she is very timid and think when l go to stroke her l will hit her and l just could not do that. l love her to bits and her skin disease is under control and she is happier than ever!

Well Harry gets bald areas, he also gets red itchy skin, he's been on steroids for 3 years now, at least. We tried weaning him off and he collapsed with Addisonians Crisis. Since January nothing too serious apart from the Crisis, but neither we nor our vet have seen him with a bad flare up or completely clear either. Our vet rang his old one who said he had been managing it with steroids and no other info, so we are trying to clear a long standing condition as best we can.
But since coming to us his coat has improved no end, and he's no longer a depressed unhappy dog either, so we just hope time will settle it all for him.

I am more than cetain that this skin condition is due the abuse your dog has suffered in the past. Abuse takes its toll on our animals, and will manifest in physical dis-ease. Any abuse is also stored at cell level, as a memory, so your dog is still holding onto what has happened to him.

It's horrible watching you're pet suffer, l know Sherringham, my dog gets depressed still because of her skin disease but the steriods are really good and sometimes she has steroid injections and it's like she is a different dog.

Yes, l thought this myself, it's a shame but we are working on her even now after 4 years, she is much happier than she was with her previous owners.
