RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the most incredible story to add to this!

I have a pal in Denmark, who lives in the middle of nowhere. A baby owl fell out of its nest, and she knew it had to be fed, to keep it alive, on chick meat. So she bought that totally frozen. She still does. She warms it up - frozen dead chicks - under warm water, to feed the owl.

Well, one day, one of these frozen chicks just got up and was alive! In fact, it was a rooster. And a very macho one! You can't go near it without a stick to push it away, as it is full and strong and attacks you. It has "created" many eggs. 😀

RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First you get a photo on your computer & go to somewhere like [link= http://www.photobucket.com ]www.photobucket.com[/link] & make an account (which is free). You can upload your picture from your computer onto photo bucket & you'll get about 3 lines of codes to use...if I remember right it's the code that you need but I find on HP you need to change the IMG into lower case to make img ect...you can always preview your post before you submit it just to make sure it works

Although I'm rubbish at trying to explain anything techie so if I've got you all confused pm me & I'll give you my email address for you to send me the picture & I'll post it for you;):D

RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahh this brings back memories, when me and my brothers were little, we rescued a baby chick from some other kids that weren't treating it well, and we had her in our garden for years, she laid 2 eggs a day, and my younger brother use to take a fresh egg and a fresh made bread roll to his teacher every day( crawler ) we named her Clara, and one day my dads friend took her to spend her remaing yrs with his chickens.

Sharock.

RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry la touche!

The owl is very much alive and well!

Called Oolie.

It flies, is fully grown, etc., I love the critter. But a huge cage about 20 feet or more has been built for Oolie. Because he missed the period of life in which he would normally go out and learn to find his own food. He can't do that, so has to be fed and kept as a pet.

It is actually, technically illegal to keep an owl as a pet, but the authorities are looking away, as in this case what else can be done? The law is there about capturing owls, not about finding them with a broken neck and keeping them alive as in this case.

Oh, re Oolie I can share this. I was about to say it is a hoot, but what a pun that would be! LOL.

Oolie, then, is in a huge fenced in area with a tree inside etc. But we took several friends to visit him after the sun went down, and one was a pretty macho man. Everybody has their phobias, I guess. Oolie started gliding around in the total darkness. You couldn't even see him as it was so dark, but you felt his wings go by. Well, this poor man kind of freaked. :D[&:]He wanted to be let out and couldn't find the door, and the fact is of course, Oolie wouldn't hurt a fly.

I would love to see an owl in the wild, I've seen owls at the sanctary but never flying about at night, although there is an owl who lives close by to me that 'hoots' me to sleep at night:D..I'd consider it to be a huge honour to get so close to one

I would love to keep the chick Amelia, but it would not be fair, it's going to need to be with other chickens.
If i kept it I would end up wanting to keep it in the house, then I would have to put nappies on it like the americans do:D

Oolie is just an absolute treat. But it is unusual to keep an owl as a pet. He isn't really a pet at all - just being kept alive as he would not survive now in the wild. Normally his mother would teach him to hunt, but he is too old for that now, about 5 years old I think.

But yes, it does feel like an honour to feed him (into his beak) and hold him - although he doesn't like too much of that. 😉

So he's not in the wild, just in a very large cage. But his family are simply yards away, and they are wild, in a big tree. You hear them hoot at night which is great as you know who each one is. But no wild owl would ever come near to a human.

well it certainly sounds like he landed on his feet finding a home that can make his life as close to his natural habitat as possible:)...I'm actually jealous of you...one of my dreams is to have a try at falonary, I'd love to get close to birds of prey (or do I mean pray[&:]..time for me to go to bed[8D])

RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all,

I used to have a HUGE owl sit on the fence in my back garden when I lived in Harrogate.

He was enormous ~ i'm not sure what kind of owl he was but he certainly wasn't scared of me .....

The first time I saw him I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing ~ he was sat on the fence between the two houses, almost leaning up against the house,no more than 12 feet away from me.

There was light coming from both the houses and the street lights and he often used to turn his head to look at me, but he just sat there ~ huge and lovely !!!

He was the every night for months ~ I have to say I felt really lucky to have been able to see him up so close.

I've also had a bat flying around in my bedroom whilst living in Germany ~ a magpie sitting on my bed in Edinburgh and a pheasant sitting on my little boys Pirate Ship inthe garden, here in Durham. !!!!

Also i've been able to watch, years ago in London, a fox and her cubs playing outside my flat in the middle of the night. The cubs were so cute and playful and Mum was wonderful just letting them get on with it but keeping a very watchful eye on them.

I would love to see an owl in the wild,

Let me share this with you.

Once in my teens I was walking though fields to meet a friend in the dark of night, in a mundane place like Coventry (!),and I felt this prickling on the back of my neck. I looked back, and an owl was in total silence gliding behind me. When I turned around, it went away.

The same thing repeated when I was in Kathmandu (Nepal). I was crossing this big but dodgy rope bridge over a big river, and I felt that same thing on the back of the neck, thatI was being watched or stared at. I turned, and blow me down, but an owl was right behind me, gliding in silence again.

RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL,

The first time I saw Oolie I didn't know what I was looking at and it took me a few minutes, really. Falling out of the nest can often damage the neck. What I first saw when Oolie was young was kinda bird-shaped, butI couldn't make out what I was looking at. This turned out to be because the head was upside-down! So the beak on top, and eyes at the bottom. You had to feed Oolie then by holding the food in one hand and raising his face in your other hand. [:-]

But I don't live there, in Denmark, and a year later I returned and his head was OK! 😉

:D:DAmazing....................a friend of mine used to take in injured owls some years ago; she also fed them frozen chicks I recall. It would have been impossible for them to return to life in the wild; I used to love going there and seeing them-what beautiful creatures. 🙂

RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the whole issue really has been about whether Oolie could be returned to the wild. My pal who has him is very idealistic, and hoped for a long time to do so, but it just cannot be done, or at least it seems that way to me.

On the legal issue, she did pursue things, but it turned out best to keep quiet as you just cannot keep a pet owl, and as far as I know that is true for the whole EU. But there was nowhere better to put him.

I must say that to hold and feed an owl is a first in my life, or to "know" him. Last visit I made with him was at midnight, [edit to add: because I was to be catching a plane early] so I didn't even see him! He has this way of gliding in circles, and of course he can see in the dark. So I just stood there and felt his wing go past my face about two inches away again and again! It is very hard to trust that he can see in the dark, so I'm afraid I always put a hand up to protect my face. 😀

So it takes much patience. The patience of a saint almost, as preparing food twice a day for "just" one owl and then taking it takes about 90 minutes a day on top of running the rest of the small farm. That can be draining on top of the rest of life.

---------

Thinking about it again, I am still amazed that the rooster stood up and was alive after being deep-frozen for many days. If I had been there andseen that happen I might have freaked! 😀

That is very wonderful! It just makes you say, "ain't nature grand?" By the way, your chick types the same way I do!

On the other topic, maybe I'll have time someday to write about my experiences with two little owls we called Twist and Shout, when I worked for a wild bird rehab. Owls are special, for sure.

Thanks for sharing 😀

Yes the chick does have a rather unique way of typing,I must say it's a fast learner:D
I was thinking I might post another vid clip in a few days, show how it's growing;)

v. I think you have a great awareness and are tuned into what is going on around you, That's how you sensed the owl flying behind you.
Ifind most people walk around with their eyes shut.
I am always the one to spot the kingfisher down by the river, or the deer in in the copse,I spotted a buzzard flying over head yesterday . There was my neighbour and I(like me she s into things nature, used to keep birds of prey) looking up at the sky getting all excited, and people looking at us like we were crazy(they thought it was a seagull[&:])
I enjoy reading your post's;)

RE: We hatched a chick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks - it was a moment to remember. It was full moon in Kathmandu, and on impulse I went to what is called the Monkey Temple. I was alone. I don't know how it is now, but then, there was only a huge rope bridge, and I "knew" I was being stared at from right behind me. Sure enough, an owl, just a couple of yards behind. I think anybody would have sensed it.

But then - off-topic - I got to the Temple at the full moon, wow, as it is very high up, and the music was powerful.
