Useful website for reuniting dogs with owners

[Moderator's edit line: This thread has been updated to include other links that may be helpful if pets are lost, missing or stolen. Please see posts which follow.]

This link was passed on to me yesterday as very useful for reuniting dogs and owners, whether dogs are lost or stolen.

I think one of the best things my boyfriend and I could have ever done for our two dogs is get them microchipped. That way if they ever get lost and a shelter or rescue finds them they can wave a special wand over the dog's shoulder and get all of our contact information. It is also helpful if someone is trying to claim that the dog belongs to them. You can then prove to them that it is your dog!! 😉

Missing and Lost pets - website help! [copy]

Another resource, kindly provided by nightspirit, here:

Missing and Lost pets - website help!

I just wanted to share with all those that have a missing or lost pet that there is a good website that I thought you might like to know about called
<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="www.amissingpet.co.uk">www.amissingpet.co.uk
The website may already hold information about your lost pets, or they will at least help you to find them as you can leave a description in case an animal is found by someone.

Old post (I know, I know!), but just to bring everyone up-to-date on this.

We all have our animals chipped nowadays. The system works well in most cases. It has loopholes though - lazy shelter staff, a chip reader which does not work (happened to one of our dogs at the vets last week), a chip which has moved (Lilly, our lurcher, has a migrating chip which seems in a different place each time she's checked).

There have been two cases in the news recently of lost dogs (one was chipped, one wasn't) being wrongly re-housed by different shelters. In both instances the owners have tried unsuccessfully to get the dogs back. It seems that once a dog has been rehoused there is no recourse in law to have the animal returned to its original owner.

The chip is good, but not infallible.

David:)

Pet bereavement support service helps not only people who are trying to come to terms with the death of their pet, but also any other enforced separation

There is an email support and telephone support line, all free.
