I was in two minds as to post this question or not as my last 2 posts, on completely different subjects had no response - maybe it's because I feel yuck with a cold but it can feel a bit demoralising.:( Thanks Serenwen for 1 reply anyway!;)

So...........my sister has a puppy who's now 10 to 12 weeks old and it's the first dog she has ever owned that gets travel sick. She is just driving round the block with her at the moment to try and get her used to the car but after 3 or 4 weeks of trying, isn't making any progress. The dog is always sick and starts getting worked up as soon as she is in the car. I was wondering if anyone knew of any remedies that could help?

Bark rescue remedy?! sorry couldn't resist the play on words but how about a few drops of that in water before going to just sit in the car not driving a few times...then increase to starting up car and then to moving off etc...
Should help...

If it's sick from fear,,,motion, i.e. not having it's feet on terrafirma, you could try a rescue remedy spray.

Hi Celia, I think she has tried that with no response. I've sent her a couple of links to look at for natural remedies but was wondering if anyone here had experienced success with anything?

Feed your dog ginger. Unlike anti-nausea drugs, ginger works directly on the gastrointestinal tract and not on the central nervous system so dogs won't become sedated. It calms the stomach and is a wonderful natural remedy to treat dog car sickness. You can grate some raw ginger to give but many dogs might reject to its strong taste. You can give powdered ginger root capsules or even make a cup of ginger tea which may be preferred. Other natural remedies for dog car sickness include:

 • peppermint tea
 • fenugreek tea
 • vitamin B6 (to prevent dog car sickness, give a little raw liver the night before).

Hi,

My pup is 15 weeks, we don't take her out within a few hours of a meal and if we do need to travel we halve the meals we give her that day so she has little in her to throw back up. We've also noticed that if we travel in my husbands car she is guarrenteed to throw up whereas if in my car she doesn't. In my car she is in a crate and not in my husbands car and this does seem to have helped. We encourage her to curl up and go to sleep which she does after about 10 mins now.

If the pup is now associating the car with feeling ill, I suggest only taking her out on an empty stomach (really difficult considering they need feeding like 4 times a day) until she's had a few trips without sickness and looks calmer, then only give really light meals a few hours before travelling and build up from there.

We've stocked up on tissue, papers, bags, and baby wipes and take a bottle of water with us when we travel. If she is sick we just quietly lift her out whilst the other cleans up, give her a small drink of water to clear the taste, then put her back in and away we go. No fuss, just deal with it quietly and calmly then hopefully pup will decide travelling isn't so bad.

I'm sure the pup will grow out of the travel sickness. Patience is the key.

Good luck to your sister and I hope she enjoys her puppy as much as I am enjoying mine.
