I was lying awake at 3.30am the other night (jet lag) and heard this very loud high pitched squealing/squeaking noise coming from an animal which sounded like it was running up and down the road.
I didn't get out of bed to look out of the window as I didn't want to disturb my husband, but am intrigued as to what it could have been. I live in a suburban street.
Any ideas?

RE: Strange animal noise
Hi Aromababe,
When I read your post I remembered months back hearing something just like you did very late at night, a high pitched squealing noise and I was convinced an animal was outside suffering some horrible fate( I live in a very quiet area too) When I quickly got dressed and went to investigate I found that the 'animal' was in fact a lad on a squeaky bike!![sm=nuts.gif]
I'm not suggesting for one minute that the sound you heard wasn't an animal it just bought back that memory for me. Unfortunately I don't have any idea what could make a noise like that, hope someone else can help solve your mystery

RE: Strange animal noise
Rabbits make a high 'whistle' sound when they are distressed or injured. 🙁
RE: Strange animal noise
I'd say it was a rabbit... not nice to hear at all.

RE: Strange animal noise
Well, it was definitely more of a squealing noise than a whistle and I've never seen rabbits around here (no fields in the immediate vicinity). I wondered whether it could have been a baby fox. Do badgers make a noise?

Hi,
I live in the countryside and when I first moved up here we heard a type of long high pitched laughing sound and our next-door neighbour (ex farmers wife) said it was hedgehogs.
Is it possible that what you heard was a hedgehog?

RE: Strange animal noise
I did think a hedgehog, but it was so loud! But the way it sounded as if it was scuttling backwards and forwards, made me think that it might be.
I can remember a few years ago, one evening, my husband and I caught sight of two hedgehogs chasing each other round the garden for ages - it was a very funny sight, but they were silent.

Hi Lesley
A lot of animals make very strange (and loud) noises when they are mating - or hoping to. Maybe it was an amorous hedgehog! 😉

RE: Strange animal noise
Well, the thought did occur that anything mating with a hedgehog would be squealing! Ouch! 😀

RE: Strange animal noise
I would say it is more likely to be a rabbit, they make a terrible squealing at times. very often this occurs because a stoat gets them, they go straight for the jugglar vein and suck the blood while the rabbit is still alive.
I have heard this often and seen it once and it can sound pretty scary. it is often the case that the rabit is strugglig and they move about a bit.
Foxes sometimes may a terrible screaming type noise but this is usually vixens in spring time.
RE: Strange animal noise
I have to say we have squealing and screaming and simply the noisiest foxes in our street and they make the most outrageous noises all year round, not just springtime!
and as for amorous fox noises... well its surprising the police don't get more false alarms!! 😀
RE: Strange animal noise
Lol...yes, it is suprising that they don't cause more concern than they do!
When I was a kid I used to sort of sleep walk a bit, I think that is what I was up to anyway.
I was asleep but aware of screaming and it gave me a dreadful nightmare, I thought that someone was being hurt outside, so I was found out side in my nighty with n air rifle!!
But apparently they had been screaming etc so that might have been what caused the nightmare.

I would say it was a fox.Probably a female with food on its way home to her cubs to let them know shes nearby. She does this so they do not get impatient and call for her and give their location away.
