Hi everyone

I have an 11 year old neutered male cat who has been an 'indoor' cat for the past 4 years and accepted this change right from the begining. In the last 6-8 weeks he developed tiny bumps at the base of his back/tail joint. I took him to our vet and she thought it was Milliary (?) dermatitis and apparently common in cats. He doesn't have fleas (he gets flea drops once a month) and is generally well in himself. The vet gave him an anti-inflamatory injection and said that would calm it down for a week and to take him back, which I did. Everything was fine so the vet and I hoped that would be it.
Sadly, last week he started to pull tufts of fur out at the same spot and I saw little dry crusty bumps again:(. I took him back to the vet who suggested a blood test to screen what could be causing it but she just couldn't get the 1ml of blood she needed as he kept jerking away from the needle, poor thing. She got about half a ml and said she would send it to the lab but not sure if it was enough. She gave him another anti-inflamatory injection that should last another 4-5 weeks and to see how it goes. Is there anything else complementary that I could be helping him with? A friend suggested homeopathy, is that ok to do for a cat?
Gabriel and I would be very grateful for any suggestions!:cat:

hope this might help??

Hello there ReikiAngel xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:)I hope you are well my lovely
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I just popped on and saw your post about your cat..not sure if any of this will help but thought id let you know

I have a westy that is 3 now but I have had problems too,
with the vet saying he has a allergy..and he has had two ear infections too

he was constantly itching and scratching him self and his skin was getting
crusty when it was so dry like ecxma, and he was losing tuffs of hair..

like you he has had the injections etcc

and after looking on internet etcc
people pay out loads of money on tests and still dont get the answer

this is what I did and have found to work brillantly so far.

I know you dont bathe cats but, I bathe Will in aloa vera shampoo,

I put evening primrose oil on his food every day, I brought that at thepet shop,

I have brought organic dog treats

but also I was recommended aloa vera Jelly after a lady I spoke to used it for her dog that had lost a lot of hair because of a allergy, the photos are fab that I saw,the before and after

so I ordered some and now rub this jelly in every day on where its been sore, underneath his belly and in cracks of his legs and his paws where he licks,
his skin is looking so much better as it calms it all down.

im also going to change his food to Eukanuba cos I have had good reports
as they do one for sensitive skin and again the results have been brillant
for dogs that have had itchy irrating skin..

I hope you find something that helps your cat, Im just so glad now
my westy is like back to normal and not uncomfortable

lots of fairylove to youuuu love fairytrish xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Please do a search on Eukanuba, FairyTrish. It is made by Protector and Gamble. There have been recalls on this product. Most of the high end (pricey) pet foods actually aren't good quality products.

Cats can safely take Brewer's Yeast. It is good for fur and skin. It is possible for a cat to be allergic to this food supplement, but it is rare. It is also helpful as a flea preventative (from the inside out). It can be purchased in tablet form or as a powder.

Hello Fairytrish, how lovely to see your reply! I am well thank you. It does sound your westie had something similar to my cat. Evening Primrose oil has been suggested by another friend so I will definately look into that, thank you.
Also thank you Dogwoman. Brewer's Yeast will be investigated too!
Gabriel has been having lots of cuddles to try and cheer him up lol.

[COLOR="Indigo"]Hi,

Funnily enough my sister's cat is having the same problems so I'll pass some of this info on to her. Her cat is fed Science Diet and I've suggested she looks at a more holistic brand perhaps.

While I agree there is a place for veterinary care, as has been seen in these posts, vets always seem to fall back on steroid injections/anti inflams and often a course of antibiotics for good measure 🙁

If this were my cat, I would discuss the matter with a homeopathic trained vet rather than attempt to treat myself.

Hope little kitty is soon feeling better 🙂

Fairytrish got there first with the aloe vera - my cat overgrooms and gets itchy & sore, and the gel works a treat as it's good for the innards too. Homeopathy also - other cat has breast cancer, and is responding really well to homeopathic remedies which mimic chemo (tho not in a destructive way) I know a good homopathic vet here in surrey if you need a referral (my ordinary vet recommended her, so might be worth asking your vet for a referral.

My cat used to have a similar problem, and pulled out an awful lot of her fur and licked herself to scabs. It appeared to be linked to stress - at the time we picked up another cat who was a stray and it stayed with us for a few months (before sadly being run over by a car), and Lucy really wasn't happy to have that addition to the family - when he was gone, she gradually stopped over-grooming and her fur was restored to good condition (we do have a second cat now but she seems to have reacted more favourably to a young kitten).

Perhaps you could see if there are any particular things that are upsetting your cat (some of them can be sensitive to noises, smells, over-handling)
and if you can protect her from some of the stressors.

You gave your sister good advice regarding a better food for her cat. Science Diet is not a good food.

Science Diet t/d prescribed by my vet for bad teeth have my old cat dreadful constipation which made her very ill. Anyway with her cancer her teeth are the least of her problems and she is doing really well on old-fashioned KiteKat which I never used to buy cos I thought it 'cheap and nasty'. However, the lovely lady who runs the cattery I use recommended it especially for older cats. I add some salmon and flaxseed oils to her diet and she's doing well. So no more Science Diet!

Thanks Fairytrish, I'm glad all is well with you too. The vet phoned me yesterday to say she's not sure if the lab can use the blood taken:(. She said if she needs to take more she will sedate him so he won't remember it! I asked her thoughts about Brewer's Yeast and she said she hadn't seen any improvement in animals taking this. She was quite happy about the Evening Primrose oil though and she's even given me the name of a Homeopathic vet (who used to work at her surgery!). She didn't think homeopathy worked for skin conditions in the animals she's treated who have been on homeopathic treatments but as I said it had worked for ME she was happy for me to give it a go for Gabriel:).
I have had a thought though re his food. I give him 1/3rd of a tin of whiskers gravy tinned food a day plus a handful of dry food in the afternoon (to help with his teeth and gums). I used to buy GO Cat for indoor cats (as that's what he is) until one day there wasn't any in the supermarket. I went into the local pet shop and asked if they had any and the man was very dismissive saying "you won't find that here dear, it's supermarket food"!. He then showed me bagged up dried food in various weights and said that it was a mixture of ingrediants for a healthy cat. I was a bit dubious so bought the smallest weight to see if my cat would eat it...he LOVED it lol. Within a few weeks his coat was glossy and healthy looking. So, up until a month ago he's been eating this and no problems. But, the pet shop man has retired and another shop has opened up selling similar bagged up dried food that looked exactly the same so I bought it. Gabriel is still eating it but now he's having all this trouble with his skin. So, I think I will cut out the dried food for now and up his tinned food to half a tin a day and see if that helps. I will mention this to the vet when she calls next.
Thanks for all the advice everyone

Love and light

update

Well, the vet phoned me last night to say the screening showed an allergy to dust mite and storage mite! I said that made me feel guilty as it sounded like I didn't keep a clean home! She assured me it is a common allergy as the dust mite can never be eradicted totally. She's talking about immunotherapy which will involve a lot of trekking back and forth to the surgery for six months and at a cost of £250-£300 without a guarantee that it will work. I said I had concerns as he is an old cat and it stresses him out every time I take him and I didn't want to put him under all that stress at his age. She also said that some cats have a severe reaction to the first few injections so they would need to keep him at the surgery for about half an hour just to make sure he was ok, which also concerned me:(. We then discussed him taking tablets (prednisolne (?) ) as a starting measure to see if he will take the tabs. I'm taking him tomorrow to get his annual vaccination and claws clipped so we will have a chat then. I wonder if my own homeopath could help him?

Hi Tarotlady, thanks for asking:)
The vet checked him over and said he was healthy for his age and called him a geriatric lol. I told her that I would prefer to try Homeopathy first before putting him on any medication and she agreed. He also has lost weight on his 'diet' and has gone from 6.3 to 6 kilo's which is the right weight for him for his size of cat.
So, I have emailed my homeopath to see if she does anything different to what a Homeopathic Vet would do?
So, smiley faces from Gabriel and me:cat:

Well, Gabriel and I are just back from the Homeopathic Vet and what a lovely experience it was! Gabriel was allowed to walk around the consulting room and investigate everything while I chatted with the vet. We were there for nearly an hour and it was such a lovely atmosphere, very relaxed. Gabriel was very at ease and often went over to the vet and rubbed against his legs! At the end of answering all his questions he declared that gabriel was a very confident cat, had a great aura about him and a definate 'presence' lol. He thinks he is a wonderful soul and handsome boy (well I knew that already;)) and he has given me a remedy that comes from Lion's milk as he is showing that he is very protective, loving and a cuddly cat, and very intelligent. I have to give him the remedy twice a day for two days and then ring him in 3 weeks to let him know how Gabriel is responding. So, watch this space!
