Hi

My dog Fawn has started to get really itchy all over her body, and has made a couple of places on her body raw (under her chin, back leg and bottom):(

I am taking her to the vets tonight to get her checked, [X(]i know its not fleas cos they are done regulary with frontline. She is an old lady now, at 15 years old and she has a heart mumour (been told that it is quite a bad one - but it has never effected her apart from some fluid on the lungs at times)

Does anyone know what might cause this itching or of anything to relieve the sores and itches?!

Thank you

RE: Scratching all over!

Does she have a swellings, a rash or any marks on her body? It could be that she is having an allergic reaction to an insect bite in which case the vet will give her some hydrocortisone (sp?).

You say shes made herself raw under her chin, leg and bottom, are these bits that would get more sweaty than others on her? It could be that she is hot and not enjoying herself very much. Is there a cold floor she can lie on to cool down?

As for cures I'd wait until you hear what the vet has to say (you dont want to aggrivate anything, especially if her skin is sore). For bites and stings myself I use chamomile or aloe vera but I'm not totally sure its doses for dogs, perhaps you could speak to the vet about it?

Hope she feels better soon
xx

Doogle

She doesn't have any swellings, bumps of rashes at all. she is just scratching and gnawing her whole body and rolling. Her eyes are a bit runny, but she gets that quite alot anyway.

It could be heat, but we have a stone floor in the kitchen which my other dog and sisters dog lie on when they get hot, but fawn doesn't, (mind you she is spoilt and allowed on the sofa as she is small and old, and for her too get out of the way of the boisterous boys and 3yo nephew!!!)

I will have to see what the vets says, hopefully its nothing to bad, maybe she will just have to be clipped out again this summer!! (i did her last year, as she got to a stage of being sick in the heat and unable to move, i had to pick her up and carry her home:() BUT my mum said not to do her this year as she is older and more frail.

RE: Scratching all over!

Well, i took Fawn to the vets last night, (well my mum did as i had to work late:()
Basically he said that she had wet eczema (??). i personally have never heard of WET eczema (i usually get them to explain to me!!)

Anyone know the difference between normal eczema and wet????[&:]

I think its just that instead of the area affected being dry and flakey, the area is wet and hot. Its still a bacterial infection and tends to occur more in warm weather but its apparently easier to treat than dry eczema.

Did the vet give you antibiotics or hazard a guess at why she got it? Glad to hear that you've got a diagnosis though 🙂

RE: Scratching all over!

He gave her a jab of anti-inflammatory, but my mum doesn't ask questions like me!! They did say that if it doesn't clear up than she has to go back to be clipped around the areas, so i assume its the heat??

Do you think it would help her again to be clipped abit shorter this summer???

RE: Scratching all over!

From what I've read it does certainly seem to occur more in the heat. I would say yes clip her if she was comfortable last year, you could always get her a little dog jacket for the colder nights 😀 I'm sure if you called the vets they would be happy to go over their diagnosis with you and answer your questions.

RE: Scratching all over!

I will phone the vets later:)

As for the jacket, i got her a little denim jacket with fur lining last year (my my didn't she look trendy!!!:D) I used clippers to do her last year and took it very short![&:] a bit too short!!!

I think i might put her to the professionals this time! Slightly different to clipping a horse me thinks!:D

Thanks again Doogle for your help and great advice,[sm=hug.gif]

With ref to 'wet ezcema' - recommend you contact Moor International Spa in Sussex - their products for animals are brilliant. My neighbour used their stuff on a horse with skin probs - cleared up a longstanding problem that steroids hadn't!

The website you want is That's the animal section of Moor Health. Their products are great as already said. I used a few for my old lady with excellent results.
You could also try homeopathy. If you don't have a homeopathic vet, an excellent book is Homeopathic Medicine for Dogs by H. G. Wolff. It's available in the library/ Amazon/ bookshops will order and get it quickly. Another good book is Natural Healthcare for pets by Richard Allport availability as before.
Evening Primrose could help. Also various herbal treatments. Echinacea would boost the immune system to help her fight it.
Good luck, Muriel

RE: Scratching all over!

just a thought, but isn't excema exacerbated by stress?

I just wonder when an animal starts licking excessively and causes damage to the skin and fur (just like my cat used to)...I have read many a time that stress is one of the main causes....perhaps as she is getting a bit older she is feeling a bit more stressed out by the other dogs or any young children around her? I am wondering if perhaps even her health condition may be causing her a bit of stress?[&:]

Sorry for being negative, its just something I always try to consider, especially as animals can't actually "tell" us when they are stressed! If you want some distant healing for your little doggie, then i would be happy to send Reiki too.....

may the reiki energy bless you and all your animal friends!
luv tiger xxxx
