Now as a dog owner I always try to make sure I have poop-sacks when I take my pooch out for a walk and I endeavour to clean up after him.

However it did occur to me one day, when I dropped my bio-degradable poop-sack into the bin with the other varied assortment of bags, exactly what is the point of packing up a substance which will disappear within days (thanks to our weather and various insects) inside a plastic bag which, even if it says it's bio-degradable, is going to take an awful lot longer to disappear?

I'm aware of the health reasons and the aesthetic reasons for cleaning up dog poop, but it does give one 'paws' for thought......:D

(oh and why do horse riders not have to clean up their mount's poop?)

I've often thought that actually. We walk in the woods a lot, and there is masses of fox poo etc, and it does seem a bit daft that I'm scooping up dog poo in a plastic bag. The fact that a horse has a vegetarian diet will makes it less smelly, and quicker to decompose, I guess, and it's not necessarily safe for the rider to get off the horse to deal with the poo either. But the piles of plastic bags full of s*it does bother me.

I agree with both of you. I'm a responsible dog owner and I've thought exactly the same thing.

What are the chances though of continually stepping on pooh if it wasn't picked up?

Not the first time I've been walking and trodden on it!

I'm speaking as the owner of both dogs and horses.:) I hate dogs mess and always bag and bin our dogs mess on walks. If you've ever tried getting it out of the ridges on the soles of kids shoes or on the wheels of buggies, you'll know what I mean. :eek:On my daily walks there are trees and hedges decorated like Xmas trees with coloured bags containing dog poo.

I don't get this at all, because there is no shortage of dog bins. Outside my own house someone has started dropping little bags of dog poo during the evenings ..... wait until I see them!!

There are a lot more dogs being walked than there are horses being ridden so therefore a lot less horse poo. Horse riders usually prefer riding off-road anyway. If a horse does poo in a residential area, its usually only minutes before someone comes and collects it because gardeners/allotment holders love it!

I have to admit the reference to horse riders collecting their horses' droppings was intended as joke. I, too, have noticed that while some people do bag their canine's droppings they then seem to think it's okay to just leave the bag anywhere - defeats the object really. Maybe Cesar Millan could do his 'thang' and get all doggies to bury their poop - about 6 feet down should do it! 🙂

when my husband takes out the dog he bags it but lately he feels that he does not want to take the dog on certain routes as others are leaving the mess, and he thinks home owners will think it is our dog. my dog is a funny one he will only really mess in the garden which means I have to clean it up as soon as he does it. but I think that those who do not cleanup after their dogs are irresponsible and should not have dogs if they cannot take responsibility for their animals. my cats when they do it outside i have watched them bury it.

This is an issue of huge concern to me right now. It appears that people have been covering up poop with the recent heavy snow, now the snow has gone and there are no words to describe how filthy the streets around my house are, going for a walk with Clara Bow has become quite stressful, I've now had four weeks of people seeing us and assuming we are the culprits, I always clean up after my pooch.
Good point re the bags but like Rosi said the alternative is streets full of poop not nice, I've phoned the council twice they don't care.

Love

Rebecca xx

Maybe phone your local paper and get them to run a story on it if its so bad, hopefully the culprits with feel shamed and think twice! There's nothing worse than an irresponsible dog owner! YUK!

maybe some manufacturer should come up with a soft cardboad device that is easy to use to scoop up the poo, and thus I assume cardboard disintegrates faster than bio plastic.

like you I feel edgy when walking the dog, I dont know if Im paranoid, but living in the city, when my dog does his poo, i's like I feel people' eyes on my back and people seem to walk slower to check what Im going to do about it! Im probably a typical product of urban stress and paranoia but I feel like shouting "it s OK, Im picking it up!". and of course, in the proximity there will always be same coloured and size poo from another dog that people walking by assume must be mine! (the dog's poo, I meant.:p)
