Firstly hello everyone, I do hope you can help me and my dog Megan asap!
I have just come back from the vets with Megan, who is a 12 year old collie cross, she has been on Rimadyl since May for her arthirits, recently I have noticed she has become increasingly constipated and in the last 3 weeks has an increased thirst and lots of urinating, she is also leaking small amounts of urine. So I took her to the vets yesterday and following a blood and urine sample it appears she has a problem with her liver and some blood in her urine, she has been given anitbiotics and a new months supply of Rimadyl.
I thought I would have a look at the patient leaflet which clearly states it should not be given todogs with hepatic problems and any long term use should be regularly monitored (not done!) I have phoned the vets and told them of this and that I wish to return the tablets, which is fine, I am now waiting for the vet to call back with a response. I have trawled the net and found Rimadyl has some serious side effects, my question to you is, what can I give Megan immediately to counteract her body's toxicity and help her to possibly recover as I understand the liver has some ability to regenerate itself, please, please any help gratefully recieved. Thanks Charlotte
RE: Rimadyl!!!!
Hello and welcome to HP! 🙂
Sorry to hear of the side effects Megan has been suffering, and I hope she makes a rapid and total recovery.
Here's a link to an earlier thread where Rimadyl was discussed, and various alternatives suggested, which I hope you find helpful. Although the thread is a couple of years old, I'm sure the advice is still valid, and there are some links.

Although I have no personal experience of Rimadyl, I did have an elderly dog with arthritis in her hipswho was put on Metacam, which I believe is a similar drug. Eventually she began to display symptoms of side effects, and I simply took her off it. There was no deterioration in her movement, and my bank balance also suffered less 😉
Hope this helps.

RE: Rimadyl!!!!
Hi Charlotte,
My dog had to stay a few days in the vets as she had trouble passing faeces and was in pain; when I visited her the next morning she had trouble standing on the hind legs (no problem before she went in), when she came out I was given rimadyl to give to her.
Out of interest I began searching for a natural anti-infamatory and came across some negative posts about rimadyl and one of the affects was loss of hind leg power and the worst is death, I had not began giving her the rimadyl and took them back to the vets who basically said to take the hype with a pinch of salt.
I refuse to give her rimadyl and her balance is not the same anymore.
RE: Rimadyl!!!!
Ive been warned off that by someone in the USA and I think its been banned over there.
I would print of what you have found about it and give it to your vets practice as a learning curve!!.
RE: Rimadyl!!!!
Hi
Being new to this forum feel that I need to tell all the prople I can about the risks of Rimadyl. I was looking at the internet sites to do some research into theside effects of Rimadyl as I have just lost the best dog in the world to this drug. Something my vets should have been doing!
He went to my vets with a limp and ended up10 days later dead. They prescribed Rimadyl without telling me about any of the possible side effects; one which is death. Nor did they do any bloods prior to prescribing this drug. As I had a Lab x I find out now that he was especially at risk from this drug. He ended up in the Royal Vet College where they diagnoised internal bleeding from lesions on his liver. All his symptons are detailed as side effects of this drug. Although I stopped giving him this drug as I had doubts it was too late. He was only 10. I feel totally cheated and let down by people I though were professionals and should not be prescribing drugs which they obviously know nothing about. Once his results from the RVC are back I intend to take this a whole lot further.
