Hello all,

I'm a Reiki therapist with a special interest in using it to help domestic and companon animals. Can anyone give me a definitive answer to whether an animal MUST be referred to me by a vet before I can safely treat it? At the moment I obviously make sure that a client has consulted a vet before coming to see me, but some of the websites I've visited say otherwise and that I might be breaking the UK "Protection of Animals" law. Now I'm completely confused and anxious not to be either breaking the law or negating the terms of my professional insurance!

Thanks,

Claire 🙂

I'm sure Stormdeva will be able to give you a definitive answer but I've always thought that a vet had to be called if the therapist was going to be physically handling and manipulating an animal. So technically you dont need a vets permission for Reiki.

Personally, when I treat animals at the moment I normally ask that a vet has at least seen the animal.

Hi Akasha

Ok...A vet does not have to refer the animal to you, basically treating any Animal with Reiki is ok, as with most animals its usually a 'hands off' therapy...however, it's always best to ensure that the animal concerned has been seen by a Vet and that a diagnosis has already been made...this should hopefully keep you in the clear, I have always suggested that the owners tell their Vet when an animal is having Reiki treatment....you could also get the owner to sign a disclaimer...this also helps to keep you in the clear.

luv & peace
