My friends and I have a Rainbow Bridge book that we put pictures in of animals that have crossed over and I find it a great comfort. If no-one minds I would like to start a Rainbow Bridge thread on here so we can all remember our beloved pets.

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; and those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver. Suddently she breaks from the group, flying over the green grass faster and faster. You have been spotted and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands caress her beloved head and you look one more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together..............

I would like to remember Gemma (my first dog, a beautiful red cocker spaniel).

RE: Rainbow Bridge

Hi

My baby was taken to the bridge yesterday after a very sudden illness. I had only rescued her from a council pound some 6 weeks ago. I was told she had been neglected and abused and her wee face was so sad. I thought I could change her view of the human race and show her what love was. I never really got the chance and I miss her so much. She was an absolute angel and so deserved to be loved. See you one day by baby.

Luv Mum xxx

Hi Weechicken,
Life can seem so unfair but the love you gave for a short while is more than a lot ofbeings will feel in a lifetime. She now knows what love is and how it feels to be cherished. Am sending you both healing. xx

Would like to remember Brunomy black labrador....
You came to me at a time when I needed a reason to live and you needed a new home. Youwent with me everywhere. You gave me such strength and unconditional love that I felt cheated at first when you were taken so suddenly but I have seen you through spirit since and know that you are happy at the rainbow bridge.
With you eternally.

RE: Rainbow Bridge

Doogle,

thankyou for starting this thread, your sensitivity takes my breath away!

In my 50 years of life I have had few animals, largely because they have all reached extraordinary ages, with one exception. I want to remember them all here..Tiger, Lady, Whisky, Wag, Fidget, Cher, Sam and Ben...all dearly loved, cherished and missed fur babies, that I will never stop loving, or forget. They enriched my life in ways that make me feel deep sympathy for those who never allow themselves the opportunity to experience absolute, unconditional love. It is real, and we find it in the precious animals that grace our lives.

Yes, animals have souls...just look at this and decide for yourselves. (I did not write this poem, but I wish I had).
A Dogs Soul
Dedicated to my beloved Dog - TABASCO
Every dog must have a soul, somewhere deep inside, Where all his hurts and grievances are buried with his pride.
Its here he decides the good and bad, the wrong way from the right,
And where his judgment carefully, is hidden from our sight.
A dog must have a secret place, where every thought abides,
A sort of close acquaintance, that he trusts in and confides.
And when accused unjustly, for himself, He cannot speak,
Rebuked, He finds within his soul, the comfort he must seek.
He'll love, tho' he is unloved, and he'll serve tho' badly used,
And one kind word will wipe away the times when he's abused.
Altho' his heart may break in two, his love will still be whole,
Because God gave to every dog, an understanding soul!

Thankyou again Doogle
To my fur babies, Iloved you then, I love you now, and I will love you for all eternity! Looking forward to seeing and loving you all again.
Much love, Mum

RE: Rainbow Bridge

Doogle and all,

Most people that I have ever known have all thought that The Rainbow Bridge was a poem, not a story..and it seems that many others thought this also. In 1998 a couple decided to finally put the story to verse, and the outcome is simply beautiful. Here it is for your enjoyment.

The Rainbow Bridge
[blockquote]
[blockquote]
inspired by a Norse legend[/blockquote][/blockquote]
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

I think you will agree, this is a very caring modern adaption of a much loved story.

My next post is not for the squeamish, but since I am here, and we are talking about our love for our precious fur babies that have passed over, I will add that as well.

Hugs
Janne

RE: Rainbow Bridge

No-one knows who wrote this, because they decided to remain anonymous. On reading it though, you can feel the immense pain of the author, and as animal lovers, we can sense the deep despair this person felt. It is hard not to feel similarly when you have read it, and realise the underlying emotions and the "need" to hope such an end is waiting for the abusers.

The Flaming Bridge

THE FLAMING BRIDGE

Just this side of Hell is a place called the Flaming Bridge.

When an abused animal dies, it stops by to discuss its life with the Keepers of the Flaming Bridge before continuing on to the Rainbow Bridge.

The Keepers of the Flaming Bridge compile a Master List of animal abusers, so that they will be able to recognize them and confront them with their actions when they die.

Across fields of flame roll cries of agony, mimicking the pain inflicted on
the innocent animals by their heartless abusers.

But the animals are not there crying out - they have gone on to Rainbow
Bridge and their just rewards for the innocent lives they have lead.

The cries come from the dark cohorts of the Keepers - savage beasts out of the worst nightmares of the animal abusers for whom they wait.

Patiently, they wait, planning for the day when the abuser arrives.

Then one day, their cries grow more urgent. Their eyes burn with an eerie, unearthly glow.

Savage glee lights their hideous faces, and as one they turn and run.

Faster and faster they run, flying over the ruined land, drawn on by their
quarry.

The abuser has arrived at last, and when the pack reaches him they fall upon him to wreak their vengeance.

His flesh is flayed from his body as their reeking breath and shrieking
laughter fill his agonized consciousness. But he does not die - his pain
will continue, forever.

Then the pack drags the abuser across Flaming Bridge, down into that special place in Hell reserved just for "people" like him......

-Author wishes to remain anonymous

I make no further comment.

RE: Rainbow Bridge

To my most recent losses Becky dogOct 05and Glo Dec 05- (either of you were mine but I know you both knew I was kind of yours).
Becky - for the pledge of being with you at your final moments - we both knew it was the right time. We never knew where you came from but that you had a hard start and I know you made my dad very happy that fortnight last July. I hope you have met with him when he past in Dec. Big ears and even bigger heart - our little 'faro' hound x

For Glo (Gloria) - I regret so much not coming to see you one last time - even saying it was because i was afraid you may have already passed is a sorry excuse. I did love you even was you scared the hell out of me galloping up Frogston Road with a number 11 bus coming at us - I think the driver was as scared as me! You taught me humilty & how to long rein. Beautiful horse - you were a gem on the ground but justtoo much for me too ride. Gallop free and find wee Becs
Love also to Midge - my dream dog real for so short a time - you got me into soo much trouble but kept me safe - my lassie dog
To Bonnie the long living square coffee table on legs borber collie
To Lulu our first dog a black Heinz 57 who protected our pram and us from the baby sitter - poor Annie she was so scared of you and we played on it!
To Whiskey (the cat with nine lives - a stray left by holiday makers, who moved up and down to my grannies with the whole family and disappeared for 3 days and came back with the remains ofthe snare round your belly - you carried that scar to your grave), Brandy, Toby and all the rest of the grey and white cats I knew esp the ones who thought they were dogs and followed Midge around and slept on top of him)

You all bought me soo much happiness and memories - Kieran (incompetent cat) has just joined me on my knee to say hello as well which is very fitting.

RE: Rainbow Bridge

From a letter sent regarding the sad events of August 30, 2005 (it still makes me cry to think of him, our Al):
Thank you (some in advance) for your thoughts, it hurts but it was time-- Al was our "main" cat. He lived with us for 10 years since he was a tiny baby David carried home in his coat. Al was a Maine Coon, the "gentle giant" breed of cat. When healthy he weighed in at nearly 20 lbs. When he was put to sleep he weighed 6 lbs.

About 3 or so years ago Al had a perfectly round spot near his tummy where his fur was missing. The last couple of years this became larger until about 1 year ago he started simply losing his hair everywhere and was essentially bald. Around Christmas of this year we noticed he was having trouble standing up or walking and x-rays revealed his tail and his hips were dislocated. We were told there was no treatment for this but time, but it did seem strange to have this happen. Maybe his joints were simply breaking down and a sudden bump had done this, we didn't know. Over the next few months Al had cortisone shots periodicallyfor the inflammation from the dislocations until they didn't work any more. They made him sick and then he'd respond well for a week or so, then they did nothing.

Recently,Al, who never would eat any human food, began to act as though he was starving and he ate everything and anything. He was ravenous with a hunger that could not be satisfied. His quality of life was nil. Although we fed him sometimes every 15 minutes, he lost weight to the point that he was too weak to jump up on the couch or do anything but ask for food. His meow went to a whisper and his pleading eyes were too much to bear.

Our vet said she thought it was cancer as it will devour calories and cause weight loss like Al had. Cancer in cats is different, she said, than in dogs who get tumors that are easily detectable and more treatable. She thought in fact that the initial hair loss was skin cancer. She did not recommend testing further (we'd had blood work done in January) but left the decision to us.

You would have had to know our Al, dad's baby, to know how hard this was to witness and have to make the call on. Al was no longer happy being a cat and his dignity was compromised by his illness.

Al was a betterperson than most humans and we are mourning him deeply.

Mine included, they were all loved and still missed.

How much sadder it is for the poor abused animals with noone to love or care for them? The alternative Rainbow Bridge made me think of them.

RE: Rainbow Bridge

Here's to my darling KD, passed this April.... never will forget her:

KD

I have an ordinary dog;

She'll never win no prizes,

Unless they give them out for great big hearts

Like the one her fur disguises.

Her soft brown eyes

Are limpid pools;

Her tongue hangs out,

She always drools

But I don't think there will ever be

A dog that I'd like more,

Who greets me oh so lovingly

As I walkthrough the door.

This ordinary dog of mine

Is sweet and kind of teasing,

I know she always get the joke,

Which I find rather pleasing.

So forget her tiny little faults

When that swishy tail gets wagging

She's just an ordinary dog,

Whose love is never flagging.

I am surprised to find a dog page on here (sorry am brand new today). I lost my lovely girl just before Christmas last year at the age of 9.

Life was unbearable without her so I contacted rescue and got a new girl age 5. She has made life worth living again.

I can never read Rainbow Bridge without the tears start to fall. This one is lovely: [link= http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html ]http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html[/link] - ooooops there I go again.:(

Hi Jus

Sorry to hear about your loss. She obviously loved you very much and had a long life. Sometimes when the light goes out it's time to open another door. My friend lost his cat and was devastated. I told him about the local cat rescue organisation and he went there and took another one home. He will always love his old cat but has found the light again with the new one. Sometimes it helps to have a new one earlier rather than later. Depends on the individual though. However, there are plenty of cats at the rescues centres just like your Suki who are wishing for a nice home with someone like you.

Take care x

Many thanks caveman, I have been looking at the website of the local cat rescue and I need to arrange a homecheck. There are 2 'middle age' cats looking for a home together and a senior cat age 16 also looking for a home.
