Hi everybody,
I live in Montreal (Quebec) and 2 racoons come on my balcony (I leave a box and food there for street cats.) This evening, one of the racoons got in the box and the other one was trying to fit in too (which was impossible). I think they may be looking for a place to hibernate (they usually do it around mid-november but the weather this year is very mild. My question is : what can I do to help them ? I could put a dog's winter shelter underneath the balcony but I worry about it not being safe enough.

RE: Racoon
Hi Kito,
Racoons are really tough creatures. I've raised a few over the years when people found them and brought them to the wildlifesanctuary I was working at and through a method of leaving food out for them, taking them foraging and a having a place they could come back to I wouldrelease them back into the wild. Believe me they have very sharp teeth and can be quite ferocious when they need to be. I wouldn't worry about any other animals bothering as long as they are discreetly hidden - but I'mmore concerned about people having access to them as they may harm them. If the place you're thinking of under the balcony isn't easily accessible to people then go for it! It's nice to hear that there are people like you that care.
Take care,
Lucinda
RE: Racoon
Wow Racoons, how cool is that, we only get gray squirrels and they can be really destructive, also kill a lot of song birds, in fact nowI mention it- I don't like them very much!!
What are racoons like ?(their nature, that is) lol !!
