Did anyone see this on the t.v. earlier this eve? I didn't catch all of it but it was saying about breeding of pedigree dogs, and how trying to make a breed perfect, dogs are ending up with horrible deformities and in a lot of pain. The 1 that actually made me cry was a spaniel whos brain was too big for his skull and walked with his head on 1 side. Another smaller breed had to have injections for severe neck pain, all because of breeding.
I can't believe how many animals suffer because of people.

What TV station was this shown on, Energy3? Was it a repeat?

It sounds like the one put out by the BBC over a year ago, which caused an almighty furore in the dog world, with rumblings continuing. In the meantime, a number of organisations pulled out of Crufts in 2009, and the dog press still gives a lot of coverage to the Kennel Club's involvement.

Anyway, I'll wait for more info from you before I go off looking for links.

I'm not sure..i was busy doing things around the livingroom. I'm not sure if it was on the news, or a snippet of a documentary that coming up. I'll keep checking and let you know.

I've always known about problems with breeding pedigrees, like with breathing for example in english bull dogs, but this was shocking.

Yes, I think you may well have seen it on the News, as this was on the BBC's website:

'Inquiry calls for better care in pedigree dog breeding'

which is about the Bateson Report, out today, and there is a video of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, I assume an excerpt from the documentary originally shown in August 2008, although I haven't watched it again today.

There's more on the report here:

Thanks. I think we must have posted at about the same time though, as that's one of the links in my earlier post 🙂

I was going to edit that to add, because in the meantime I've dug out the HP discussion thread on the documentary at that time. Here's the link:

Worth a read perhaps for the points of view posted on behalf of the many good, caring and responsible dog breeders that exist.

I saw it last year (or something like it)
It disgusts me what people will do for money. 😡

Like everything some people spoil it for genuine caring breeders.

i agree- its sick how some ppl exploit animals. i remember a few years ago a lot of illegal puppy farms were raided and the dogs rehomed, never hear of them anymore i wonder if there are any stil, or if people have stopped doing that?
there was a documentary on tv3 a few weeks ago, it was called lawless ireland, and all about dog fights. they were showing footage and cctv, and i had to leave the room it was so upsetting i couldnt watch. i have two dogs that have to be kept separarted because they fight and i have been there a few times when they have fought. its so scary and its horrible, i dont know how any one could get enjoyment from that but there is some messed up people out there.

I'm amazed at the number of people who own dogs with docked tails. Talk about obscene cruelty. We have two Cocker Spaniels and both have their tails - we refused to buy from breeders who had tails docked. Our vet is very appreciative of our decision and wishes that more people took our stand. Then maybe the practice would stop.

hello scott,
could i just ask, without being too graphic, how the tails are docked. i dont personally like it either but i (quite naively it seems) thought it was done under general anasthetic and in a medical way?

You are not naive, I'm sure the operation is performed as you suggest. But to what point? Why risk such an operation on a young animal. I would claim that those who purchase docked puppies are the naive ones. The practice needs to stop and the only way is if dog owners refuse to purchase docked puppies. Whenever I see someone walking a docked dog, I always wonder what kind of owner that person must be.

This article from The Times gives lists of working breeds of dogs which are legally exempt from the docking ban and states who may dock and when, in terms of the age of the dog:

It was written in 2006, when such exemptions were passed by the Government, but so far as I'm aware the situation has not changed.

Further articles, which can be found from links in a box on the left, a little way down the page and headed 'Related Links', give more information.
