I was just having dinner when the little fella ran across the floor.:eek::eek::eek: I suppose they are coming indoors now cos the weather has turned cold.:mad: I haven't seen a black one before, but it was definitely a mouse. :p:p
So the problem is now how to get rid of it or them before they start multiplying.????? Please help. I really don't like 'em and am feeling very unsettled now.:dft008:

Really enjoyed reading that Sunanda.......reminds me that I need to pop one down in the cellar to check ours didn't return. I have 2 cats but there is a room built within a room down there so they could get under the floor and get stuck. Partner would not be impressed at having to dismantle his office tee hee.
I do prefer the humane box and they luuuuuurve choc!! I do feel sorry for them having to go out into the cold but it's gotta happen sadly.
Mmmm I thought I had one a couple of years ago at my old house in the country, 46 dead mice later they were gone from house and integral garage, they had tunnelled into the house from the garage and entered from under the kitchen sink squeezing up the hole for the pipes.
See if you can locate where it came in, they love kitchens as any crumb is a feast. They can squeeze through tiny holes.
I used mice traps mainly under kitchen sink (stick a few here as they are good at bypassing one and may enter in 2's or 3's if you have more than one) and behind loo and bathroom sink. I put loads of traps in and found that a 2-3 would trap at the same time.
Mice love chocolate so I recommend using chocolate spread etc on the traps. Check regularly.
good luck. I'm sure yours wont be as bad as mine.

Aw, you never killed them all! No need to waste chocolate on them BTW, peanut butter is definitely the bait of choice! But oh dear, 46 dead mice.....
Many thanks for the link to that thread Sunanda. It's given me lots of ideas and I've just found a humane trap in the bottom of the wardrobe which I shall now be putting to good use. 🙂 The trouble is I have no peanut butter or chocolate. *sigh* Any of that in my house is soon gorn.:D

Yes every one, oh and I didnt include the ones which ate the poison!!
I had foolishly stored two big sacks of peanuts in the integral garage, the mice found the sacks, munched the food and obviously being very happy and full decided to invite their friends around for a party and turned my lovely garage into a maternity ward and kindergarden for little mice!!
Downside of country living was the mice. Didnt have my cat then. Though I think a mousetrap is probably more humane than getting mauled by a cat. Funny enough my cat was a stray which came to the garden and wouldnt go away, maybe it heard it was a hot spot for mice
I had two mice some years ago! they do run very fast! so bought humane trap and caught the sweet black one but the small field mouse was too light for the trap to shut and had peanut butter without getting trapped! I took the black one about ten minutes away and released it,had to think of a way to get rid of the tiny one and found these plug ins sound things that repel them away it works it is brilliant..

We've had the occasional mouse in the house and I'm afraid I favour the nuclear option. Call me hard-hearted but the question you must ask is: do you want the mouse (and its friends) to carry on beating a path to your door?
If the answer is no, then a "humane" trap just won't do. Peanut butter is a good tip from Sunanda (it's worked for us) but put it on a proper trap and steel yourself for having to empty it into an appropriate garden or rubbish bag. Not nice, but an infestation of live mice is even less nice.
Hiya peeps
Many thanks for all your advice on me 'mouse problem'. :grouphug: I kept on waking up last night thinking I could hear it.:speechless-smiley-0 I think I'm gonna delegate the mouse eradication to dear hubby.:);)
We have a mouse in the loft, think he's been there most winters. We hear him scratching and ambling about above us when we're in bed, bless. There are no cables or anything up there so we leave him be. Not nice to be out in the cold over winter 🙂
Of course infestation is another matter, though our lurcher dogs tend to keep numbers down outside 😀

Sounds more like a flying mouse to me (a bat that is 😉 ).
We have local bats that scrabble around under the tiles on the roof and as we have an attic bedroom it can be quite noisy sometimes (from the bats, not us of course. 😀 )

Hi Giles
I guess it could be bats as I see them zooming around the garden sometimes. However, I have also seen mice running up the outside walls - of course the dogs go ballistic when they are looking out the window and see this!!!
At first I thought we may have a squirrel in the loft as our neighbours had some in their thatch loft. Haven't seen anything come out so can't be sure either way.
I've always had cats so seldom have to put up with these lovely little critters - I can remember when my son was quite young and I bought him a birthday cake with Mickey Mouse on top the cat bought in a mouse from the garden to join in with the fun:D
The humane traps are definitely worth getting also stuff any holes with wire wool - they can't eat their way through it.

Living where we do, there are plenty around. What I object to is the cat bringing in live ones and letting them go in the house!
Got some excellent plastic traps locally, and used peanut butter to great effect - but that was AFTER one found my stash of dark chocolate!
I hate killing them but with lots of buildings and open space, there are plenty more where they come from. What I do NOT like are the rats - all making for the buildings and feed troughs - UGH!!! and burrowing into whatever they can to make their winter nests ...
I am quite fond of meeces 😀 but I would not want to share my house with them.
Best of luck seeing it on it's way.
Cripes, I am so jumpy at the moment. Any slight noise or rustling has me I think I've heard it today but haven't seen it, thank goodness.:p
Most people do feel unsettled when the ysee a mouse. I dont blame you one bit... I have heard someone put essential peppermint oil on cotton balls, placed them around the house, where a mouse ahd come in and the issue went away...
Get a cat! The only mice you'll have after that is dead ones! Although the cat we have now did go through a phase of catching live ones outside, bringing them into the house and then releasing them so she could chase them!

Yes, that's a good idea Bannick. I love cats but unfortunately it's not an option for me ATM. I did used to have 2 cats which I loved and when they passed away it was so upsetting, but I never did have any mice then.:) Maybe there should be such a thing as 'rent a mouser'.:D:D

Maybe there is such a thing: friends of mine 'fostered' a couple of cats while they were waiting to be permanently rehomed. Or maybe you could look after someone's cat while they go on holiday. Isn't there such a thing as the Cat Protection League? (Yes there is. This is it: )
Or could you borrow a neighbour's cat and just let him have a sniff around your house? If a mouse has moved in, the cat will surely smell it and let you know. I think I was lucky that I just had the one (as far as I know) and it had probably just come in for a look around - if they settle down that's when you get huge numbers. BTW does anyone remember that old Max Bygraves song about 'a little mouse with clogs on, there by the stairs...'? Sorry, it was Ronnie Hilton and it is!!!
Ah, thanks for those ideas Sunanda. Our neighbour has 2 cats and there is a beautufl one called Jasper who has indeed been into our house at time, just to look around mind. he is gorgeous and vocal as well, though I don't know what he's saying. Lol. I'll see if he's around. 😉
You must be on the same wavelength as me as well Sunanda cos I keep humming that tune in my head as well and imagining 'the little mouse with clogs on'. Kinda cute. But mine has gotta go ....................:(

LOL It only came into my head as I was reading your penultimate post. I must be more psychic than I think I am!
Well, I haven't seen or heard the mouse for quite a while now. BUT its still here as the little tinker has eaten the mouse bait I put down with gusto.:(:( So, I am now onto Plan B - a different bait purchased from Homebase which is said on the packet to be stronger and gets 'em in 24 hours.:D Luckily there's no sign of it eating anything in the kitchen though, except for the bait, so that's a big PLUS.:)
I have also purchased my 'Plan C' - a mouse-trap.:p But I won't be using it unless Plan B fails. BTW, I did try the humane trap but it was flipping useless. Plan D would be to borrow a cat from the neighbour. I already asked him, but I think he thought I was joking, but I was actually sounding him out.:D:D
Hey ho, hope it will go ................:)

I agree. I've suffered heavy infestation and it's no joke when they are crapping everywhere. I'm allergic to cats so that's not an option for me. I treat mice like I treat bluebottles.... with zero tolerance I'm afraid. Humane traps are ok for the odd one, but when they are breeding, it's no joke. Traps and poison are the only option....that and sticky pads....which I'm not keen on using.
If you knew about the diseases they carry, you may think twice about love and light and being all humane.
Cripes, I am so jumpy at the moment. Any slight noise or rustling has me I think I've heard it today but haven't seen it, thank goodness.:p
the worst is when they zap across the room unexpectedly. I have no real aversion to rodents, I could handle them quite happily, but I hate the way mice whiz around. Makes me scream like yon girl....
We've been dealing with a phantom mouse for nearly three weeks now! I bought some humane traps but no luck, upgraded to the snap traps with the same result, now on to glue traps and still not a nibble. Must be a health-conscious mouse as he's the only one in the world with no interest in peanut butter or nutella!
I'd hoped that he'd left, but he keeps leaving little 'gifts' for me around the flat which is beyond disgusting. Last night was the final straw; we came home from the pub only to have the little beggar lead us on a chase throughout the living room as the fireworks were going off. Happy new year! 😮
Does anyone have any good mouse bait recommendations? Poison is a last resort. Getting a cat isn't an option as we have two budgies and my husband is allergic to animal hair, but I've had enough of this. One mouse in a tiny apartment is enough, I don't want to deal with his relatives! 😡
When the shops open again, then go for a poison bait - leave it in the corners of the rooms where you have seen it - they tend to stick to the edges of rooms. We had to resort to poison when we had an infestation a few years ago - humane traps accomplished nothing. Sorry to offend, but they are vermin.

I agree with you Jabba. Puttting down poison was the last resort for me too. I bought the rapid stuff from Homebase and put it down and haven't seen or heard the little blighter since.:D It really was quick and is infinitely better than being over-run with quickly-growing families of mice.;)
Do let us know what you decide on tapestry, and how you get on.:)
Thanks for the advice. I'm reluctant to use poison as I don't want him to die in some corner and stink up the place or die outside and be eaten by a cat or fox, but if there's nothing else to be done than that's what I'll do. I rebaited the traps with honey and oats in hopes he might find that more palatable. I also read that sometimes mice who ignore food are actually looking for nesting material, so I baited a few with some cotton wool stuck on with honey. But if I haven't caught him by the weekend I'll get some poison.
I don't have any illusions about mice either; they are cute but I've shared a house with them before and I know what a nightmare they can be. I'll keep you posted on my mighty hunt!
