About half an hour ago, i noticed a black, shiny spider with a big belly heading underneath my bed and it hasn't reappeared. As i had never seen that type of spider before, i googled it and i wished i hadn't as it's a false black widow spider 😮 While it's not deadly, it does bite so i'll be perched on my chair tonight with the lights on until i find it and then trap it!

I haven't posted a link to the pic in case there are some people scared of them- i'm not but it still sent shivers up my spine.:)

I'm really hoping and praying I imagined this last night, in order to keep what little nerves I have left- PLEASE NO, THE SPIDER WAS NOT IN MY BED RIGHT NEXT TO ME !!! :speechless-smiley-0:speechless-smiley-0:speechless-smiley-0:speechless-smiley-0

I was having trouble sleeping, and in my half dozed state opened my eyes to see (whether in my mind's eye or for real!) the merry widow. While I didn't scream the house down, i did however, vacate my bed faster than an Olympian athlete! I checked all my bedding and surrounding areas, but no sign of it. I didn't take any chances though, as the remainder of the night was spent with the light on!:o Every twitch and itch on my body didn't help either, and as for sleeping...!

I'm going to have to be brave and stick a broom handle underneath my bed to see if it's still lurking there-if you hear a scream, then a thud, you'll know what's happened LOL

Were it me Calla, I'd take everything out of my bedroom, one by one, inspecting it carefully for signs of said Merry Widow, vacuum close to hand to grab and use if necessary. Once the whole room is clear, I'd then upend the bed sideways to look underneath - vac hose in hand - you may need additional forces to be called in at this stage (family, neighbour, etc). If no sign, then the matress has to be separated from the bed too and everywhere inspected closely, especially dark places, undersides of any tables, chairs, cabinets, cupboards - in fact under anything that is moveable, and inside said items. If there are areas above and behind wardrobes, then these have to be checked too. I'd even go so far as to put a wide area of doublesided sticky tape across the doorway (don't step on it) to catch it if it decides to make a bid for freedom in that direction. 2 people and 2 vacs may be better too. If there is still no sign, I'd resort to a heavy dose of insect spray and closing the door leaving it for at least an hour or calling in the pest controllers to fumigate the room.

You can't exist without sleep - can you sleep in another room or is there anyone you can stay with until this pest is found?

I was brought up in the bush in Africa and developed a very healthy respect :hidesbehindsofa: for anything that had 6 or more legs , even 4 legs was worrying at times :(!

Wishing you every success in your quest - you have your weekend cut out for you!

Very best wishes, and every success in your endeavour!

Hugs

Caroline

PS You could send it love and ask it to move on elsewhere, but I'd be doubtful if it would take much notice!

Some of those smiley type pop ups are brilliant. It takes me all my time to
get just a simple face on a post.

If you look to the right of your reply window where the smileys are and click on [<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="More">More] at the bottom, you'll get another window - a small one which you can enlarge - with lots more. Click on Close This Window at the bottom when you've done.

Some of us also use:

where again you simply copy and paste the image [not the text]. Nothing to download. There are probably some spiders lurking in there too 😉 😀

HTH 🙂

Have you ever just watched a spider building its web. They are industrious little things. Some of those webs are works of art, yet how many times do we just brush them aside. My wife was watching a program that showed
a spider dangling an ant over an ant hole to entice an unsuspecting ant out. Another spider that threw it web to catch its victims. Good job they don't come any larger, or we could be in big trouble.

Thanks Holistic it works.

Holistic - no, not me releasing the false widows - I've been in my current house for 6 years and only found them here. I lived upcountry when I owned the spidercatcher about 15-20 years ago! :p:D Mostly used for big crusty house spiders.

Nice horror story for you... when we moved into our former home, the previous owners had left it in an awful state. The house was in the town centre so near two supermarkets and numerous shops. My OH had to pull a pile of debris and rubbish from an outdoor alcove and felt like he was being watched.

He was...

...by TWO huge tarantula-type spiders. We never did find out where they went, but needless to say I was exteremely twitchy for a longtime afterwards.:eek::eek:

Sorry i haven't got back to replying this thread, 😮 many thanks for the helpful information CarolineN, i did a sweep under my bed ( using a garden cane) and nothing made a charge for me. Before that, it didn't bode well when I clocked another, much smaller and harmless house spider come out from under the bed, go back and has yet to re surface... I've been hoovering since then, but no spider has met its maker.

I think i can safely say my mind was playing tricks re it being in my bed, as a couple of days after, i woke to the sound of scuttling on my bed which panned out the same way as last time's nocturnal nightmare. However, when my rational side kicked in come morning, unless that merry widow had 4 pairs of doc marten's on, or my daughter's hamster had made a bid for freedom ( she makes a noise scuttling around) then it was all a figment of my imagination. *PHEW!*

I really wish though, i could say the same about the spider when i first set eyes upon it...

I do hope you find your elusive spider soon, horrible being a phobic isn't it! Luckily, I didn't meet my OH's exotic friends, I think they would have finished me off (quite possibly literally:D)

:009: Sorry. I think Calla Lily knows my sense of humour by now though!
Plus.....if these spiders are around, then I'd rather know about it - hence the link to the news headline!

I understand what you mean because I have the same type of humour which can kinda get me into trouble, with others who don't enjoy this humour, spoil sports
