What do you feed her?

What shampoo have you used on her? What did the vet say about her smelling?

RE: My Shitzu Smells Help

We feed her Purina 1 and bath her with shampoo we purchased at the groomers. We have tried a few different ones though

I used to use pro plan (made by purina) it was an decent enough food but the rep did tell me that obviously the lower ranging foods have more additives and preservatives in, these may be causing her to smell.

I sell aorma tags that attatch to the dogs collar so they smell nice, there is also a matching shampoo. My parents have used it on their elderly dog as she ponged with age.

I am intrigued as to why the dog smells, did you ask your vet?

Yes I did and he told me it was her glands - well it wasn't I don't really think this vet cares for small animals. I love my little Zoey but sure can't figure her smell out.

RE: My Shitzu Smells Help

I would change vets, you want a vet that wants the best for your dog.

My gs used to get full anal glands, in her case it was because of a bad diet. SHe hasn`t had it for years but I must admit I don`t remember her smelling, just the sacks when they were emptied yuk.[:@]

I will ask around for you, but it might be an idea to think about changing her diet. Have you considered feeding her a raw food diet?

I will let you know if I find anything else. Good luck.

just found this for you

My dog smells. What could it be?
Generally, if your dog smells, you need to look at four things: ears, teeth, anal glands and skin. If there is brown material on your dog's teeth, then your dog has excessive tartar buildup. He may be licking his skin with an infected mouth causing a foul odor. If there is black material seen in your dog's ears, it is probably an ear infection and not just dirt. Anal glands are a frequent source of a fishy smell and could indicate a problem that should be examined. And, if your dog has dry skin or bumps on the skin, that can also cause an odor. In order to properly identify the odor, just bring him in for an examination.

I`m still looking. Apparently you can use bicarb of soda to stop a dog smelling it is also suggested to use it in the dogs bed to eliminte the smell from the house. For the dry bath you apparently put the baking powder on the dog then groom it out. The powder picks up the smell so then the brushing takes it away.

Our cat Freia has problems and has o go for a regular um, cleanout. She hates it and we hate her having to have it. They are fed mainly on Hills although we've tried other brands but to no avail. Been advised to sprinkle a little bran on their food so they get a little extra roughage following her last session. It's not really helped. Have tried rice based foods also - vet says some pets just are prone to this and have to get sorted every few months. Still looking though - could be worth trying to bran though, failing that a peg may work. *sigh*

Thats what we were told with Ellie.

I was not happy with the idea of taking her to the vets weekly to be empited. I` mglad she doesn`t suffer now.

Apparently yeast can cause them to smell, as can flea`s or food allergies.

RE: My Shitzu Smells Help

Smelly dogs and blocked anal glands are nearly always a diet issue. Commercial diets are sold to make the manufacturers wealthy and have got nothing to do with the health of your dog. Doesn't matter how much you pay for the food - they all contain chemicals & additives etc. Think about it logically, a plate of home cooked lamb and rice sitting on your kitchen shelf would grow legs and go walkabout wouldn't it ? Yet a bag supposedly containing just that (no artificial additives or preservatives according to the manufacturer) has a shelf life of months? Does that food even look or smell like lamb and rice? Of course not. Personally I recommend a raw food diet for dogs but even if you want to cook for your dog that's better than what comes out of a can or packet.

Hi KKelleher,

I agree with newwoman in that the main reason why a dog might smell is because of either teeth, ears, glands(anal) or body hair. Have you tried a herbal shampoo which naturally cleans the coat and does not remove the natural oils that are meant to be in the coat to keep it in good condition? What are the teeth like, is there any plaque build up or damage, are they in good condition? What about the ears, one of the things that can make the ears smell very bad is if the animals has got ear mites which causes infections etc. Again the other thing to look at is the animals diet. What breed is it? With certain breeds:):D:) you need to feed certain type of food and not the mass produced dog food. Hope this has been of some help.

Must giggle, the profanity filter wont let us type Stitzu anymore. *giggle* Sorry, it took me a min to work it out.

Our cat is stinky, doesn't matter what you do she's stinky, all we can do is stay far away from that area and not breathe in when close to her - then let the vet clean her up, the mucky little pup. Diet helps a bit, put a little bran on her food each day and it made it worse, seems to be wheat or something.

RE: My ****zu Smells Help

Wet foods contain a lot of *crap* so try some dry food. Try different ones to what helpes.

My vet said the more the food stinks so will the dog.

RE: My ****zu Smells Help

My 15 year old boy chihuahua has had an odour problem for years. He has very long hair and he gets a "musky" sort of smell. He suffers from dry skin and my vet suggested squirting a broken capsule of Sunflower oil in his food each day. Guess what, his coat is lovely and shiny and he doesn't smell. May be worth a try. Also it doesn't interfere with any other medication they may be on.

PS I loved the poem about Rainbow Bridge yesterday (on another forum). I'm not normally a very sentimental person but that poem bought tears to my eyes and as my little dog may not be around for too many years, that will definitely comfort me when he passes on.
