Yesterday my rabbits leg was broken after being pulled out from under the bed. My mom and I took her to the vet and found out she has a broken tibia/fibula. The vet said surgery would be $1500 but my parents don't have the money. The other choices were to keep my rabbit in a pet taxi for 6 weeks to heal or make her wear a splint for 6 weeks.. If anyone has had a rabbit with a broken leg, mostly tibia/fibula please talk to me. I'm so worried that something will go wrong. I'd just really like to hear stories from anyone whos rabbit has gone through the same thing!

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

Thank you! My dad said it she doesn't get better then we have to put her to sleep. She's almost 3 months old and I just can't do that. One of my rabbits recently died so this makes it a lot harder. If anyone has or is going through what I am please, please talk to me!

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

So sorry to hear about your bunny.

Could you ask your vet how successful the splint would be - I know if it was Sage, I would try that if I couldn't afford the full thing.

I did find a story on this site of a rabbit who had lost his leg & was still seemed to be living happily- they might be able to offer some advice to you - it's UK based but they might know of other contacts. [link= http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/ ]http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/[/link]

I also know a lady who takes in all types ofinjured animals & nurses them back to health- I'll give her a callthis evening& post whatever I find out.

Take care & hope she feels okay.

Hi Tiabia,

I have a rabbit, and my advice would be to ask the vet to put theleg into a splint. Your rabbit should still be able to have some movement, but make sure she has plenty of food and water available to her at all times (within her reach) and if you can, try and keep her in the house so that you can keep an eye on her.

I hope she gets better real soon.:D

Sending my love

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

Poor Rabbit. What about her feelings? What about the pain she'll be in? or doesn't a broken leg hurt?????? It is time to think about the rabbit, if the purse doesn't stretch to having the leg fixed, and there is no charity vet care around i.e PDSA (or your country's equivalent) then please think about the rabbit, put yourself in it's place "would you want to be left with a broken limb,to hobbly, drag, eventual arthritic pain to boot"? There will be (whether she has treatment or not) on going problems because of the break, maybe not straight away but in rabbits short lives it won't be long, so vet fees won't go away.I'm sorry but you have a duty of care to your pet.
I'm really feeling for you because you have not long since lost a pet and I know how terrible that loss is, and this baby is only a few month old,but please think about her,not yourself.

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

Today we took my rabbit to a different vet. A orthopedic doctor took a look at her. They decided a cast would be very helpful and I found that a splint isn't the best way to go. My rabbit doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain, she's being very friendly and such, we still have her on medication. Besides that she's doing okay. My mom and I are going to pick her up in a little while. In a week we have to take her in for a check up and they may have to put on a new cast depending on the swelling of her leg. She's doing very well eating and drinking water. The vet just suggested putting her in an aquarium for a few weeks so the cast doesn't get caught on anything. I researched about other rabbits and their legs and they all seemed to get back to normal. But Iappreciate everyones feedback. If I have anymore questions or if anyone wants to know how well everything is going I'll check back. Have a great day everyone.

Take care of you all. Lyn

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

so glad to hear that your rabbit is on the mend!

Even though some people may feel that a rabbit is a small insignificant pray animal, they still deserve to be given a chance of life. I have found rabbits to be very resilliant creatures and they seem to know when you are trying to help them. I'm sure she will be hopping around on her memded leg in no time! Its great that you didn't give up on her!!!!

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

Well she has the cast on now and she's in an aquarium cage. She's moving around a little back and fourth in the cage. She has a check up monday to see if they have to put on a new cast because the swelling will go down. She's got to have the cast for 2 weeks, maybe a little longer. I figure it's better then having nothing on or a splint for 6 weeks and now she can actually walk. She's still eating well and drinking water. She keeps nibbling the cast a little. Of course I wouldn't give up on her! :Dmy rabbits mean everything. The doctor said it should heal fine so we'll see. Thanks again everyone!

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

my rabbit broke its leg today, i was picking him and he jumped out of my arms and fell on the ground. he started walking funny and i

freaked out. took him to the vet and he gave me all sorts of optionsafter hearing which i wanted to cry.he said he'd try to put a cast on

him and see how it goes but it could be awkward given the shape of their legs. they might have to operate on him to pin his leg but that

could cost hundreds of pounds, whichi can't afford. he saidtreatment basicallycomes down to money, if i can't afford an operation then

there's the option of euthanasia. my rabbit's only 23 weeks old:( not to mention the fact that i absolutely adore him, but he's just a

baby! i'm really hoping the cast will do its job.

keep me posted on the progress of ur bunny tiaba, it'll give me some hope

Well I said I'd keep everyone posted..

Today my mom and I took my rabbit into the vet to see if she needed a new cast since it became loose because the swelling went away. Well she was lucky enough to get the cast taken off. That's right, her leg is healed! She only had to wear the cast for 9 days. The vet just said to keep her in the aquarium for at least another week so she can get used to walking on her foot again. She's doing good. Being very friendly as usual and eating like her normal self.

RE: my rabbit has a broken leg

hiya tiabia,

i am so glad that your little bunny has survived the trials of a broken leg. my daughters bunny had a broken leg a few months ago, he was at the vets having his nails clipped and he is very shy so struggled when being held and he banged his leg. it broke. the vets paid for all treatment except analgesia and pain relief.

bunny had a splint that was assessed and changed weekly or fornightly and after eight weeks he was mended. had a scare part way through as he became constipated due to inactivity as we had to make sure he didn't move about much. he became chesty aswell. but the vet was very good and sorted him out.

he is back to his normal bouncy and mischievous self. he is so cute and we are sure that he thinks that he is a dog.

glad to hear of your success story too. they are so precious and soon become a part of the family.

love dawnymariexxx

hello,
i was just looking up surgery prices for rabbits in google, when i found this forum, and ur thread.
first of all,i want to congratulate u & ur little bunny, that the healing went ok. 🙂
second,my rabbit was chased by a dog yesterday, and she(the rabbit),i dont know, twisted,or broke her leg, because she cant walk properly.. we went to the vets, but it was about 10 o;clock, and we had to go for emergency, which costs 120 pounds. my mum said we will come back tomorrow( well, today.) but im afraid. what if my rabbit needs surgery, which we cant afford? (i read that i costs from 500,to 1500 pounds.) .. my mum would never pay for it. is there a cheaper way,to get my rabbit healthy again?
thanks..

i didnt realise that rabbits had such delicate legs. poor little things. i suggest insurance for all pets. vets charges are very expensive. i would re-mortgage my house rather than loose my babies but then not everyone is the same. always try an animal charity if they cannot help directly they may be able to give u advice.

It may sound wacky but positive thought can work wonders.
If the vets are optimistic then build on that. Keep positive thought that the limb can and will heal. There are countless examples of positive thought producing a genuine healing and it is not just wishful thinking there is an actual science behind it.
