Mmmm, not nice I know ... but that's what a lot of dogs do in the wild...yeh ... I know they are not in the wild but it's an instinct that they are born with...and one that us humans don't care for very much[:'(]
It could be a nutrient deficiency...maybe a change of diet...but if you are happy with what you are feeding the pup/dog on, then the only other option is to clear up after them straight away....most puppies grow out of this habit, I say most...as one of my dogs use to do the same (thankfully he no longer does) but it took a long time to stop the habit...please don't tell them off...as they see this as being told off for going to the 'toilet' in the first place, and then you may well get all sorts of problems....still not happy, take them to the Vets and get their general health checked out and ask for further advise. once heard this was a vitK deficiency, do they eats cats poo as well, dont worry its quite common really i just hope you havent got a dog that likes to lick! dont forget to make sure upto date with worms/vaccines if he she does.......

Puppies eat poo
It may seem gross to you
But that's what they do.

I've had 2 dogs which have done this but they seem to grow out of it when they get older.

I don't think its anything to do with deficiencies - more an instinctual thing e.g. removing their tracks to ensure their prey doesn't pick up their scent or somesuch thing.

Try to distract your pup as soon as they've done so they forget about it and then you can pick it up & dispose of.

It also serves as a reminder that even the nicest things on the outside also have naughty or not nice bits to them!

My flat-coat retriever did this and still does if she get the chance! In fact she'll eat most things, including other dog's doo. She is 18 months old now and she has got better - her favourite was horse poo which there is loads of in my road, she would just charge at it and get as much in her mouth as she could before I could drag her off. YUK.[:'(]

Well thanks everyone its good to know that my puppy isnt the only little disgusting puppy out there...
and for the record my puppy eats any kind of poo !!
and I guess it wouldnt bother me so much but he likes to do his business in the house and before I know it he grabs it up and jumps up on the couch to relax and enjoy his snack and you know what snacks do they leave crumbs....little poo crumbs all over the couch YUCK!!!!

but I always win the "my puppy does this or that" contest if someone says my puppy does ... I always say well my puppy eats its own poo!!!!

Hi bfine,

I have done a animal course and eating their own faeces is quite a natural thing for dogs to do. This is for several reasons as follows:

1. Eating their own extrament enables the animal to retrieve every bit of nutrient that they can, a bit like when a cow wil regurgitate its stomach contents to chew it again before it goes to its second stomach to be digested fully.
2. As someone else said it is a way of removing any proof that they were in the area, thus a protection against predators.
3. For some animals it is a way of training their young to look after themselves, it is only us humans that apply the same domestic rules to a housedog as to a wild dog.
4. It is the case that some animal, in the wild and street dogs, do not eat very often so it is another food source.

I hope that this is of some help to explain your pups actions but as others have saiud he/she should grow out of it as you condition the animal with your desired human behaviour patterns.

I really really hope that Buddy ("thats my puppys name) does grow out of it he will have his first birthday Jan 21 so lets hope for the best and in the mean time my kids are glad they dont have to clean the cat litter box!!!! Buddy always does it for them!!!

I know I'm adding a bit late here but I don't usually have much to say on these forum's as I don't have a pet.
I have a friend who's bitch gave birth to 6 pups. The mummy dog ate all her puppy dog's poo as it was being produced! It was like looking at a sausage being made and licked away as soon as poo-sible!! [:'(] I have to get this out of my mind again now. Managed to do it for the last few weeks. I wish I hadn't been nosing around in forums that don't concern me but there you go..... curiosity got the better of me and now I'm regretting it.

I thought it might make light of a disgusting thought!

To add to this I was at my friends yesterday mid afternoon onwards and we were having snacks and drinks etc... anyway she has two dogs, one is very old but still has some life in her and the other was born July 24 so he is still a pup. He doesn't leave her alone, always chasing her [sm=dogrun.gif][sm=dogrun.gif] and 'picking' on the ol' girl (that's men for ya! 😉 ) Anyway, she must have had too much to eat coz the next thing we see is her being sick...... can you guess what happened next????

Yes, he went and licked it up,[:'(][:'(][:'(] every last bit, no need for a cloth or wiping, he left no marks!

There you go, another thought to get out of my head.

My english bull terrier is 17 months old. Although she doesn't do it as often, she still does occasionally eat other dogs' doings. [:'(]She used to eat her own and I asked the same question. My bullmastiff Coco, when she was a puppy did exactly the same. I don't know why they do it, but they just grow out of it. I suppose it's like a child picking up a worm or whatever and shoving it in their mouth! I really don't have a clue and the vet said she'd grow out of it. She has loves a bit of horse/cow/sheep muck!! I think all dogs do. Something to do with the grass in it.

Puppies are gross at times!! This is why it's so important to worm them regular.

Good luck. Concentrate on not getting your house eaten to bits!!!!!:D

I truly do hope that my Buddy does grow out of it as he likes to leave little poo crumbles in the furniture and I swear if I sit in any more s*it that little dog is going to be spending his nights in his kennel!!! not nice and warm in the bottem of the bed!!! I heard about your new dog "Buddy" good luck with that
and oh about him chewing my entire house no kidding this puppy of mine likes to chew tables chairs oh ya window sills and walls and .......you name it he chews it...!!!!

This is perfectly normal behaviuor in animals - do not panic.
Dogs mainly do it for attention and bordom, try buying them a nice new toy and take it out with you on walkies.
It is also to do with a lack of vitamins etc, most people do not know this but guinea pigs actually digest there poo daily.

We bought a puppy last week and when I was reading this post, I was
thinking, thank god my puppy doesn't do that, well, guess what? yes, he has started doing it, the first time I saw him do it, I had to run to the loo to be sick, soooo gross!, he done it again today and I'd had enough, phoned the vet and he said it was behavioural!, try and distract him when he's doing it with biscuits or something, seems they will grow out of it, my sister in law breeds dogs, so I thought I would ask her, she said to give them some mashed up pineapple in their food, seemingly they don't like the taste of it and they won't eat the poo! Off to the supermarket to buy a couple of crates!

Good luck!!! It is really wonderful when you have guest over and your puppy runs through the house with poo in his mouth[:'(] My Buddy has almost stopped the poo eating thing of course that doesnt seem to stop him from eating plastic forks and tinselk and styrofoam and etc........
