My yorkshire terrier is now 13 years old and suffering from arthritis, he takes medication for heart problems so I do not want to give him any more pills. Is there an essential oil that I could safely use on him? I massage him and he loves it, but would like to know if any one has ever tried oils on a small dog.

RE: My doggie and I need help

Hi, I don't know about oils, but I did have an old girl who had very bad arthritis - here's what I did for her....

What worked for my old lady dog was Runaround from Stock Nutrition, which is Green Lipped Mussel, Shark Cartilage, Vitamins C & E. Within 5 days on that, she was trotting a couple of miles, with no trace of a limp, having previously only been able to stagger to the end of the road on very shaky pins, where she was lying down to watch the traffic while on Metacam. She was great on the Runaround for a couple of years.

Then her legs got worse again and I added in Garlic, Greenleaf Tablets from Denes, Osteotrace tablets from ARONHA, got her a magnetic collar, used crystals – Blue Lace Agate to start with, and others, she also had Acupuncture for months, but I eventually stopped that and did acupressure on her myself after having been shown by an Acupuncturist how and where would be most beneficial. These were all added in at various times as the need arose. She also latterly had Reiki which helped enormously and I believe gave her an extra 6 months with me.

There are loads of natural products and therapies out there which I am sure would help enormously. The trick is, as ever, finding the right thing for YOUR dog, which is where your gut comes in – you’ll know what’s right.

Homeopathy can also work wonders. Hannah just didn’t want it, she preferred herbs etc.

The book which helped me a lot and sent me in various correct directions for Hannah is - Natural Healthcare for Pets by Richard Allport (available from the library). He covers a wide range of natural therapies and is based in Potters Bar, he’s one of the top Natural Vets.

Had I kept Hannah on Metacam, she would have been dead by 12 as the Vet prophesied, but once I changed her to natural treatments she was MUCH happier, healthier, fitter and had a much greater quality of life. She lived to 15 years and 6½ weeks!

Runaround is available from Stock Nutrition [link= http://www.doghealth.co.uk/ ]www.doghealth.co.uk[/link] Phone 08000 744302 They are very helpful.

Denes website is [link= http://www.denes.com/ ]www.denes.com[/link] Phone 01273 325364 They also have a range of Factsheets which they will send out free of charge very quickly if you ask. They’re also very helpful.

ARONHA - Phone 01943 862893

I know Glucosamine can be great too.

Some other products I believe can be helpful are :

Mobileaze [link= http://www.aviform.co.uk/ ]www.aviform.co.uk[/link] I know someone who has used this very successfully with her Weimaraners.

Cortaflex
Synflex

Ease by Phytopet 01244 813162 email info@phytopet.co.uk

Deer Velvet [link= http://www.velvetenergy.com/ ]www.velvetenergy.com[/link]

Copper Collars help some dogs, but obviously not at the same time as a magnetic one!

Fish oil can help too.

Wow, that was really informative! I have a German Shepherd/Border Collie cross. 8 years old and only happy when he's extremely busy, sadly his arthritis is gaining ground so will certainly be taking on board the remedies that youmentioned.

Here is couple of aromatherapy blends too:

Blend to Ease Rheumatism Like humans, many dogs suffer from rheumatism as they age. Your veterinarian may treat him with specific medications or natural therapies. But locally, you can apply and massage the following blend in the morning and night to alleviate pain. Prepare the following blend by pouring the essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and adding organic vegetable oil to fill. 8 drops Birch 8 drops Juniper 7 drops Rosemary

Blend to Ease Arthritis As recommended by some veterinarians, soften your dog's bed to make it very cozy and warm. If your dog is an 'outside' pet, allow him to sleep inside. A little moist heat, applied directly over painful joints, can be a great comfort to arthritic pets. Get him a warm sweater, or apply a moist heating pad. And massage the area twice a day with the following blend to soothe the pain away. Prepare the following blend by pouring the essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and adding organic vegetable oil to fill. 12 drops Birch 8 drops Juniper 7 drops Rosemary

Hi

I have both cats and horses and have found a combination of using Glucosamine and magnetic therapy products really usefull.

When I first got my horse she ws exrtremely stiff especially in the mornings but after about 6 months she moves freely. Is till use both products now as I am convinced this has helped her no end.

I have had to use any of the products on my cats but have heard good reports of these products been used on dogs too.

Glucosamine can be purchased almost anywhere these days but if you need an advice about magnotherapy and how it works then please feel free to ask me.

There are some great responses here, and much useful information. I have been treating arthritic dogs for many years now, and apart from the fact that most of them are passionate about massage, I would also recommend glucosamine and "Sash'a Blend" in the diet. Both are designed to improve the integrity of the joint structures and fibrous tissue. Don't make your regime to hard to stick to, so find something that is relatively easy, and that works, and stick to it. Depending on the degree of arthritis, some of these remedies can take many weeks to kick in, so be patient.

While you are waiting for that to happen, use Bach Flower remedies to help your dog through, and also consider consulting a homeopath, as many such remedies have been astoundingly successful on my dogs and those of others.

Good luck and please let us know how your precious fur baby fairs. God Bless

Hugs
Janne

Hi

Metacam can be good but has been known to have some nasty side affects. another chemical alternative is Cosequin DS which only your vet can prescribe and is quite expensive

for a natural remedy Glucosamine is a good but something I found even better is Bromelain (Pineapple Extract) available from Holland and Barratt. It is used as a natural anti inflammatory and boosts the effects of anti biotics.

Hope this helps you and your doglet
