I was wondering if anybody could help... My dog keeps eating grass and goes through regular stages of being sick. He has been to the vets & was told he had an inflamed patch on the lining of his stomach. He was given anti-biotics & anti-inflammatory tablets and was fine again.
Have started giving him pro-biotics and he is still eating grass and the past few days started being sick again...
Am reluctant to keep taking him to the vets as they always give him anti-biotics etc and worried that his immune system will just crash! Does anybody have any ideas?
RE: My Dog keeps being sick...
Hi Poppy angel,
Keep going with the probiotics as they can take a while to correct the gut bacteria levels. You could also try homeopathic Echinaceae to boost his immune system and giving live yoghurt in his dinner will help too.
I find the homeopathic echinacea is easier to get dogs to take as the herbal ticture tastes vile!
Chamomile is also good to settle stomach complaints and ginger is good for nausea. Think you could use these two as aromatherapy oils, but not sure how to use them, no doubt someone who can advise will be a long shortly.
If you think he is at all stressed then flower remedies may help to calm him as the stress could be adding to the problem.
Hope this is of help.

Thank you, will keep up the probiotics & get some live youghurt in! I will look into the homepathic & aromatherapy.
Thanks for your help [sm=hug.gif]
RE: My Dog keeps being sick...
Good advice already. Make sure the live yoghurt is PLAIN though, no flavoured stuff. You can also get echinacea in tablet form if that's easier to get down him/her.
Homeopathic remedies should be taken on their own at least 10 minutes away from food and should not be handled - drop one tablet directly from the container onto a clean plate and pretend it's a big treat. My first dog was a nightmare to get Homeopathy down, I ended up putting them in water, but then it's difficult to get the required no. down in a day. My homeopath told me that homeopathic echinacea does not rebuild the immune system, I was better with ordinary tablets so that's what I use.
Is he/she being repeatedly sick all day or is it just occasionally? Have you recently changed food, got new carpets, been decorating? All could have an effect.
Eating grass is a natural way of ridding the stomach of any irritants and should be allowed. They are also usually very good at finding and eating any other plants which will help them so do allow that.
If there is gurgling in the stomach you could try a Rennie or part of one if it's a small dog. Often when I've given a Weimaraner one, she's sick shorly after but then the stomach settles.
If there's repeated sickness you also need to replace the body fluids. Boil a pint of water, add 1tsp sugar & 1/2 tsp salt, let cool and put out for drinking. If they won't drink that, put the salt and sugar in the food.
Have you tried starving for 24 hours? Then feeding a bland diet for a day or two often works. Rice, white fish and natural live yughurt is a good one. Then a gradual return to normal diet.
Homeopathically speaking, Nux Vomica is probably the best all round remedy for an upset stomach, but there are lots which are all for slightly different conditions, you really need to refer to a good book. Homeopathic Medicine for dogs by H.G. Wolff is good. Your chemist may have a reference book for animals if you ask.
Ginger biscuits can help, Camomile tea may help, the dried herb is much cheaper than tea bags, steep and strain: a herbal shop would advise.
Good luck
RE: My Dog keeps being sick...
thank you for your advise. as george is a labrador, he has a tendancy to scavange ALL the time and is always hungry. sometimes I wonder whether he is picking stuff up when im not looking! (my mum phoned me half an hour ago to say he has been sick & it was a corn on the cob core!!!) yikes! [:'(]
it has probably been in him tummy since sunday and he hasnt been able to digest it... have tried putting a muzzle on him when we are out and about but he hates them. so much so he cut his nose trying to get it off 🙁
it is really difficult to know what to do for him... if sees something unusal on the floor he has a good go at eating it. most of the time I can get it off him but sometimes im too late. he is only 2 and has always done this (and always had bad tummies because of it). i really want to help him but im lost as to what to do....
RE: My Dog keeps being sick...
Hi Poppy angel
As I too own Labradors I can understand your problem. One of my dogs keeps getting the runs after eating horse poo!! I usually give him one arsen alb 30 c tablet (homeopathic)and this restores things to normal. You could also try the flower remedy Chestnut Bud, as it is for making the same mistake over & over and not learning from them.
Have you tried a basket muzzle? as they are not so restrictive as the cloth type he may tolerate it better.

have tried both types of muzzles & he hates them with a passion
will give the remedies a go - thank you

I had to stop mine from coming to our horses field because of that problem!

My horse is here at home with me, so dogs manage to sneek into the field when I'm not watching. They are also partial to a bit of goat poo too!!
The joys of being a Labrador owner!
How is George doing now, hope he is improving.

You'll be pleased to know George is feeling a lot better! Although if he isn't eating one thing, its another!!!
Labs! Wouldn't change him for the world though!!! 🙂
RE: My Dog keeps being sick...
Hi Poppy angel,
Glad George is feeling better. I had the same problem with my youngest Lab, she was off her food for a few days in the morning. She has just had her first season so I thought it might be a mini phantom. She is fine now and to help matters today she caught a field mouse. I tried to get it from her but it was swallowed ASAP when she thought i was going to take it from her!
No ill effects so far! Will keep the Arsen Alb on stand by just in case!
I dont think Labs will ever learn not to eat anything remotely edible.
Just one of the joys of being a Labrador owner!
RE: My Dog keeps being sick...
Hi poppy angle,
it`s no consulation but i have two border collies, and this summer they are constantely eating grass. But only one of them is being sick, i to have been to the vets it`s not worms and stomachs are clean.i have tried so many different remedies to no avail.the horse poo thing, they all do when they might be lacking certain nutrients . As for your dog having his nose into everything,Labs do like their food,,especially when its tied up in a binbag. We had a Lab as a family pet she was a star but very naughty when it came to scavaging,i hope you get your dog sorted soon,i have a feeling once the summer is over the sickness will stop, unless it`s to do with her raiding bins etc.
Be happy,
Oohla:D
