My next door but one neighbour has nailed up metal spikes along the top of his fence. It is to keep the cats out of his garden. The neighbour, who's fence he shares, has 3 cats and I have 2. She called the police to be told there is nothing they can do as they are sold as cat detterents!! Needless to say we are horrified and when she spoke to him about the risk to the cats he said good. So so worried. 🙁

That's terrible 🙁 Surely he could have tried alternative methods ?! I'd be gutted if Myrtle our cat was hurt on those things or by anything really, hope you get something resolved soon x

Cats are a bit smarter than you're giving them credit for. The spikes are designed to stop the cats from even trying to climb on or over the fence as there's nowhere for them to hold on to, they're not designed to impale the cat. It's a similar concept to the spikes that stop birds from landing on window ledges, the top of signs etc. Again, they're not designed to harm the birds, just to make it impossible for them to land in a certain place (I'm thinking about getting some for my satellite dish as crows sit on it and stop the signal!). In fact, the spike deterrants are the control method recommended by pest control technicians as being a safe but effective method.

I have a cat myself, but you have to remember that some people really don't like cats any may not want them in their garden. If the neighbour used the sound deterrent route, then it could cause discomfort to the cats when they are on their own property, as well as keeping them off his. I would be very surprised if a cat was injured by this and at the end of the day you have to remember, it's his private property the cats are going on.

In some countries, you're not actually allowed to let a cat roam outside of your own property. In these places, cat owners often put the spikes on the fences to keep them in.
