Hi
Can any1 recommend a good food to put weight on an old dog.
Fawn is now at the grand old age of 17 and a half!years old, and recently she hasnt been eating very well.
She is on meds for a heart murmur, just recently been put on them as she collapsed on a walk 🙁
Fawn has ALWAYS been a fussy eater - will not touch any dry food, she has to have winalot tins or pouches!! or of course anything human 😀
she gets fed in the evenings and i tried giving her some extra in the morning, but then she wouldnt eat at night! Now she only really eats half a tin then leaves the rest - she is losing weight fast but dont know what else i can do - someone suggested giving her rice with half a tin - would this work?
Any suggestions will be gratefully recieved for a much loved doggy 😉
RE: Losing weight
Have you tried feeding her a meal in the morning and a meal in the evening? It may suit her better than just eating once a day.
Failing that, the vet may be able to advise you.

RE: Losing weight
You could try good old-fashioned Chappie, the tinned version (although they also do an excellent dry feed, but you say she won't eat those).
The tinned one has rice already in it, also fish ... and it smells of it, unfortunately! I had an oldie on it (nearly 17) some years ago, having noticedwhen readingthe label that the analysis/composition appeared to be almost identical to the special old dogsdiet I'd been buying from the vet at three times the price 😉

RE: Losing weight
I can vouch for Chappie too, I feed my 4 12 year olds on chappie complete, however I always add water, I make one bowl approx 1 and 3/4 pint of dry food then cover with boiling water leave to stand till tea time, this amount feeds all my std Dachs. They have one tin of Winalot meat 400g shared between them, they then have a Sardine and drizzle of the sunflower oil or tomato juice on top,THEY LOVE IT ! 😀
