Whilst many people enjoy the hotter weather, our pets don't.
Please keep them in a shaded room, possibly with a fan running in a safe position, plenty of water to drink for all mammals.

If walking your dogs, please keep the exercise light, on the shady side of the road, be careful of melting tarmac, they are predicting mid 30's, and tarmac melts at those temps. In addition this time of year too, watch out for grass seeds in paws and ears especially.

If you find your pet collapsing with the heat, cover with a COLD wet towel and ring your vet for further advice.

If you have to leave them alone all day, please get someone to call to see they are ok, especially between 10.30 and 3.00.

There is also a warning for people in Heatwave warning - 2 July 2006, 12:15:39 PMin General health and Advice

my girls (dogs) are in and out of the house, the house is cool. I give them ice cubes in their drinking water.

I simply wouldn't walk dogs at all until the comparative cool of the evening. For the last couple of years I've usefully combined walking my dog with a trip to the supermarket at about 8.00 pm ... not too hot for the dog to wait in the car for a few minutes, and a walk on the way home. Bonus:The shops are usually quiet then ;).

Our golf course opens for paying customers at 6.00 am in the summer, we used to walk our mob from 5.00, lovely time had by all, off lead, off road and swims!

10 years and arthritis on, a gentle stroll down the road when they feel up to it.

ButI do see a lot of people even in this heat walking their dogs at midday. Our vet has an enormous notice up advising against it.

I can't walk my dog at the moment, she is having trouble coping due to this heat so she has a fan on her and a wet towel, she is loving the attention.

Something else that can boost them too if they overheat, and its easy even with an attentive owner. Try a small pinch of salt, 2 tsps of sugar in a small amount of water, helps with the blood sugar levels which can go haywire in the heat

My girl gets her own ice lollies.[sm=jump1.gif] Freeze some mashed banana and live natural yoghurt in a kong. The banana is a pre biotic and the yoghurt a pro biotic - bingo what a happy team.:D

I don't do getting up early so usually give her a walk in the evenings when it is hot. During the day I do some clicker training. 10minutes using their minds can wear them out as much as agood run.;)

My friends dog has been here overnight with us. I just taught her to do a high five using the clicker. Think her mum will be chuffed when she comes home.

I have been at home all day today and left the back door open, thinking our lurchers may want to sunbathe, but they go out for 5mins then come in and lie on our cool flagstone floor! Took them for a quiet walk about 9am this morning and they'll get another about 7pm tonight. May even take them down the local and have a pint in the garden - me not the dogs!

Was reading in Dog World today, vets are advising not even leaving dogs in cars with the windows open as it still gets dangerously hot. Some people are also campaigning for the sides of tents to be rolled up at dog shows to let air circulate. To date 3 dogs have died at dog shows in a combination of standing around in the ring inhot sunshine waiting to be judged, in cars and in tents and caravans, this is all in the last 6 weeks.
