Ive just tryed to look up on the net for a bit of info on this breed,, cant seem to get much.

Can any one give me a bit about them? Its a male and hes about 14 wks old.

Ive got a 3 yr old girl too have i chosen the right kind for her to care for?

How big will it grow? - as ive bought a hutch which is ideal for now but if it grows alot bigger i can see me having to buy another?

What foods do they especially like, i was told to introduce slowly to carrot , lettuce grass etc and I have been doing so but no joy yet.

Shall we be bringing him out of his hutch at this early stage?

we had him in the house the other night and when dh went to put him to bed in his hutch he started doing mega flips, running from side to side banging his head off each end, and streaching his back legs as if he was all tensed up.Dh said that it was frightning to see him do this as he has been so calm up to now with us.

Any words of advice much apriciated
jj

RE: just bought a dwarf lop ear

Hi Joe Joe
I've got 3 lop eared rabbits (not dwarf though) and mine are fantastic with the kids.
I've had 2 of them since they were 6 wks old and I've let them out into the garden to run freely since I had them (they do like to burrow/dig[&:]
Foods, I feed mine a dried food daily plus grass, dandelion leaves(their favourite) clover(another favourite) cabbage(once or twice a week) carrot (every now & then) but I was advised not to give lettuce (I think it gives them constipation)
Handling your rabbit daily will ensure he keeps a good temperment (sp?) and will also help him to settle more into his new home (I also talk to mine:)
Hope this helps

Thank You Crystallove,

Many helpfull/ mind easing tips there,

I will let my dd get him out like we did start every day, but then when he had that fit the other night hubby said it may be best to let him settle in his new hutch first before confusing him with our house, as hubby got the impression he didnt like been put back in to his hutch late thursday nightafter being in the house.

Thank you again

Hi Joe Joe

I don't have lops but I have a dutch who I love to bits and he will go mad like you said if he doesn't get his own way! We had him in the house for a while a few winters ago but when we got the cat he started to be distructive so we put him outside. What they are doing is actually flicking water and poo at you as I got it alot! it is their way of warning you off! The best thing is to get him nutered if he isn't alrady as you will have a tough time if he is inside!

I love keeping rabbits and this is my 3rd, he is on his own as he is that sort of rabbit but him and the cat get on really well! When he goes, which will be a while yet I am going to get 2 together, but dutches again as I love the bread!

Hope everything goes Ok with him

With love

Maria

Thank You Mariaob 1

Great advice there, Do you think he will be fine on his own? or will a guiny (sp) be a good idea to entertain him.

I used to own an english lop a male again he was very bossy and kicked and flinged alot too, I did get worried when hubby came in and said he was batting in to the walls, at 1st thought I thought he was unhappy in his new home.

Hes settling quite well now though and is very patient with my daughter.

At what age is right to get the nutered do you know? how much is it also?

Thank you again for your time

RE: just bought a dwarf lop ear

Hi Joe

I have 2 female lop rabbits (not dwarf) and a male dwarf lionhead. I was told that my lops were mini lops but they arent they are probbaly a happy medium. All my rabbits are in hutches sized 4ft by 2/3ft they need to be able to stand up on their back legs and have plenty of room above them.

Your new addition will be fine on his own or you could always get him neutered when he is a bit older so that he can mix with your other rabbit. please do not mix rabbits and guinea pigs together this is a mistake many people make and it usually ends in a tragedy. Rabbits can become very boisterous once they hit puberty i have heard of g-pigs being kicked and crushed by rabbits. I am a huge piggy lover and have two of my own they have completely different temperements to rabbits so they should only be housed with their own kind.

I think rabbits can be neutered best after 6 months of age.. and depending on the area you live in is normally around 50.00 a rabbit.

My rabbits are all fed on Rabbit Excel which is a pellet food to stop selective feeding. They have half a cup full of dried, a handful of hay and a hadful of either cabbage, dandelions, toast or carrots a day. PLease try to avoid feeding rabbits lettuce and cucumber both are very wet foods for rabbits and this gives them bad stomach ache and dioherrea.

Hope thats enough info to keep you going 😀

RE: just bought a dwarf lop ear

Thank you xf, some very usefull advice you have given me,

He seems to be settling in very well, and weve found out his fav food is grass! I have found what you say about lettuce is very true, he had a nasty poey house the other day after eating some.

The hutch I think is going to be a problem, when ive caught him standing on his 2 back legs, he hasnt much room above his head, if at all any, im not sure of the dimentions of his hutch but im posititve he is going to need a bigger home soon, Im going to try and get a local joiner to build up one for me.

Thanks about the advice on mixing g- pigs with them, something I may have considered doing in the near future. I defnitly sharnt be doing that now.

Thank You for your time.
