Has anyone used the new pet passport scheme to travel over Europe with a dog?

Just wondering what the various European peoples attitudes to dogs were.

Also, if anyone has a good knowledge of some of the less-known european languages, could they let me know! I want various dog tags made in different languages with my details.....

Thanks

RE: Has anyone travelled across Europe with a dog?

Well Mark, I had my dogs all vaccinated, and passported etc and then the vet said, after about £300 in fees, that he wouldn't advise taking dogs to the sunnier, southern parts due to the diseases they aren't and can't be vacinated against and for which there are no cures! The local dogs apparently form an immunity and the locals obviously know what to look out for, but things like Babesiosis and Ehrlichiosis which are carried by ticks have been known to kill dogs when they arebrought back into the UK that have followed all the necessary precautions and passed the Pet travel scheme!! Trouble seems to be the UK vets don't look for those diseases 🙁

Heartworm is another problem but using Stronghold or program Plus can help.

Leishmaniosis is transmitted by sandflies and although fle preperations will help they dont cure.

Then I was told that I should clip my longhaired gsd'd to make sure that I could get the flea sprays and chemicals deep to the skin.

Arghhhh so we haven't yet taken them. Obviously in theory it should be great, no kennelling and a happy dog. But really the pet scheme is just to stop Rabies being transmitted I think?

RE: Has anyone travelled across Europe with a dog?

Hi Markbude,
i brought my two boarder collies and my cat to the South of France under the new pet travel scheme at the beginning of this year.My Partner and i are both from cornwall and are currently staying in France for a year.Anyway sorry i'm waffeling,we had no problems ourvet was brilliant reserched area we are staying our problemin this area is ticks which can be deadly to dogs(and humans) but i frontline thedogs and check fortickes regularly and they are fine,touchwood..
Traveling through Europe is fine as long as you explain your plans to your vet, pets can be vaccinated against rabies upto 3yrs now,but you must make sure that on return to the uk your pets aredeticked and wormed by a vet between 24 and 48 hours before they are checked in for the returne journey back to the UK.
You can also log onto The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) which will give you all theinfomation that you need from Defra.
Oh and as far as Europeans go,mostare besotted with their four legged friends and you can take them anywhere withyou ,just makesure you have all the correct info on your passports.Hope this helps
Regards Paula.

RE: Has anyone travelled across Europe with a dog?

I travelled few years back thru Europe with my King Charles Spaniel ( I am from Finland and you could take finnish pets anywhere in the world)

She visited Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Luxenburg, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and few other countries.

No problems, apart from one pilot of SAS would not let me have her in the cabin, but below with the luggage. The planes have a weight limit on what size dog you can have in cabin and at the time it was 12kg limit and my dog was 11kg, which was very handy. She travelled in a bag on my lap.

Europeans love their pets and as long as your pet has all the relevant shots, you will have no problems at all!!!
