I was sitting in the garden after getting home from doing some treatments, just enjoying the peace and quiet and a pair of Great Tits were making quite a bit of noise and flying about like crazy from branch to branch. Didn't make much of it at the time, but later as I was cooking and had the back door open I heard cheep cheep cheep which was loud enough to draw my attention to it and I went out and my cat had cornered a young bird. I grabbed the cat and locked her in the house and went back into the garden as the poor bird only seemed to be walking very quickly around the patio.

So I went out and sat down in the garden, again the pair of Great Tits were agitated and looking all over the patio and as I walked back into the house the little fledgling ran in front of me into one of the flower beds for cover.

This gave me a bit of a dilemma. What do I do? Do I leave it? Is it hurt?
Can it fly or not? So not wanting to interfere too much with nature I left it thinking it may need some time to recover and it would probably die of shock anyway if I put it in a box and brought it inside. I kept the cat in in the meantime.

Any suggestions?

Hi Binah,

Its that time of year again:eek:

Leave the fledgling alone. Its quite normal for some species to leave the nest and run around before they can fly properly. Thrushes and blackbirds do this too.

Picking fledglings up, no matter how well-meaning, may make the parents abandon them. At the moment they are watching out for this bird and will be feeding it too.

update - nearly stepped on a baby blackbird 10 mins ago. He/she's ok though, and gone to hide under some bushes.

Best wishes,

David:)

I have rescued a few in my time and made friends with some - seriously!!
One of Madge and Midge's babies (black birds) used to come and see me and wait for worms, then one day he left me 🙁

I just follow my heart when a casualty appears, I either give it a warm bed, dig up worms and put it back in the hedge, I generally know where they were nesting.
Sometimes I do all three but I would never touch a nest.

Hope they have found their way home.

hey
came across a little fledgling today and didnt kno wat to do however it was on the road and i didnt want it to get run over as it didnt move when i drove up. So i went to scare it off well i walked towards it but it just flew rite under my car right behind the wheel!!!! so went to move it again and it flew into drain beside my house and it got wet so i didnt want to leave it there aas water deep enough for the little thing so i lifted it. it must have been on me for 10 mins cos i couldnt figure out what to do. in this time it had decided to jump the whole way up my arm and sit on my neck!!! it sat there when i went into house and got a little box for it to sit and dry off in. cut along story short after few attempts to keep it away from road it found its way bak well to some robins and that was the last i seen of it!! my son wanted to keep it as a pet!!!! even started to cry quietly to him self as he wasworried for it too!! sorry to bore you with the details but here are some pics i took!!!

hey treacle,
thanx only glad its bak with mummy and daddy now!! didnt realise how wet it was til i looked at pics on computer!

binah , yeah there was worry that parents may abandon it but i read up oon internet and they say human contact had no connection with abandonment if ya know wat i mean.
it was lovely when i was watching from the window it was calling out and this robin came down picked worm up from grass and jumped onto wall to feed fledging it was beautiful to watch it just wasnt able to fly away after the robin not properly anyway i guess it was just learning how to fly! there were plenty robins around when it made its way bak to hedge i'm guessing where it came from!!
