Hiya!
Ive payed £16 for a spray because I thought Cole had got walking dandruff but either this was a wrong diagnosis or the treatment hasnt worked. Im thinking he could just have very dry puppy skin. Im putting a dribble of olive oil in his food-anyone know of a topical potion to put on him aswell!
Ive got a boxful of Eo's and carriers-it seems daft not to use them!!!

RE: Dry skin in dogs
Hi there T moo moo here
Regarding your little puppy Cole, and his dry skin. Your right to offer him some oil like olive. Perhaps You could also try offering him Apricot kernal, sunflower or grapeseed vegetable oil too. (cold pressed ones that you use in massage and definitely not the cooking variety that you get in the supermarkets!!!!) You should not need to apply the oil to him topically as well, it is probally better that he has it internally, otherwise the oils on his coat will atrract dirt - dirt = bathing, bathing =strips coat of oils. Offer him the bottle of the various vegetable oils one at a time (take the top off!). If he sniffs the veg oil and/or licks his lips or mouths then it means he likes that oil and probally needs it. Offer him a little on the palm of your hand or in a bowl, does he lick it up keenly or not so keenly?. Does he leave any or seem to want more? If he dosent like the veg oil you offer him he should walk away, turn away, give you a funny look, growl, generally not be interested or gets distracted easily or not sniff it. Let him come to the oils, dont make him smell them. You should be able to tell which oil/s is/are his favorite/s (he might like them all too though!) You can let him have maybe 30-50mls, daily but he may need more or less depending on his size. (sorry i dont know how big he is or what breed he is) He should guide you and should not take more than he needs. Offer them to him if you can every morning. The veg oils are better offered to him at this time as they are physical oils.
All of these oils are excellent for the skin and coat and general wellbeing as is calendula (also called marigold) you could try offering him some of this too. If it is dry skin the oils should help him. Im an aromatherapist (for humans) and am currently studying animal aromatherapy and aromatics. It works on the princible that the animal chooses it's own remedies as they would have done in the wild, it knows what it needs. Nowadays however animals dont have the accsess to things such as herbs etc as they once would have done in the wild, due to domestication, forest chopping, destruction of natural habitats etc etc. I have used the veg oils on my own dog as a case study and her coat is so shiny i almost need sunglasses when she is in the sun!. They have helped her coat look more "healthy" even though she diddnt have dry skin. I rarely bath her now, bathing can strip the animals coat of the natural oils they have. She dosent smell either.
I would'nt worry about using essential oils topically on him, just try using the vegetable oils (carrier oils) and see if he has a lick or two of them.
Always remember that a healing crisis may occur and the problem may get worse before it gets beter when it comes to holistic things. This may happen. Of course if you are worried you should go and see the vet. This advice im offering is'nt intended in replacement of vet attention if you feel he might need it. x
I have also had success in years gone by (before studying animal aromatherapy) in dry bald areas on dogs skin by giving a couple of evening primrose capsules to the little dog in question (i pierced the capsules and let her lick the oil off my finger). This also worked with good results, the hair grew back and her skin was no longer dry after ablut 4-6 weeks.
Please let me know how you get on T id love to know. Hope this helps your little pup, bless him and you for caring enough to ask!!.
Love and blessings

I think Moo moo has said it all!
You could also try a raw egg in his feed.

RE: Dry skin in dogs
[sm=sandrine.gif]Hi There T, I hope by now you have had some more insight, if not a full recovery to the skin problem on your puppy. Loved your reply Moo Moo, excellant advice. I am wondering how old your puppy is? How long have you had him? where did he come from? These answers will help you to get to the root cause of what is going on with him.
The skin is known as the outer lung, the lung is the house of emotion, we can often hold grief here which can be presented to us through the external areas in many cases the skin is the most common one, hence why so many horses and dogs have skin problems.
Shiatsu is a wonderful therapy to help release lung/large intestine problems, as you apply it you are also deepening the communication between you and your dog as these Metal element problems can often lead to anti-social behavour making it difficult to take them on walks as they find it difficult to adapt to a new enviroment.
A big factor added to dog skin problems is central heating, making the enviroment too hot causing stress to the dog, so be sure that this is not the case for that young warm blooded pup of yours. Where the oils (bases) don't help you could try the aromas them selves the most common ones i tend to use with 100% successs are Neroli for sadness/loss especially if your puppy was weaned early or from a rescue centre, Lindon Blossom for emotional abuse and Rose otto for past trauma. Allow him to choose as he will know exactly what he needs to aid his recovery. Again using Moo Moo's wonderful offering advice, and always notify your vet in all that you choose to do with him.

Best of luck,

moo moo, i found your post very interesting. I have only grapeseed and sweet almond bases at the mo. The vet actually told me that EP oil would be better for him than olive oil.
Im gonna try grapeseed tomorrow (if he likes it!!). Ill keep u all posted.
I like the egg thing aswell Doogle! Although I hope it doesnt give him the farts as he has got that particular art already perfected!!![:'(]
Jacqueline hi!!! Cole is a 13 week old black lab
He settled in extremely well. He has never cried in the night and has only had one poop in the house and that was through the night!!!
He is my little prince and I love him soooo much! (ok Ill stop now!!)
