We have a family of hedgehogs in the garden and have been feeding them up for their hibernation. Whilst having a look on the web for more information about them i have discovered they like chopped up peanuts (plain, not roasted or salted, like the ones put in bird feeders)
It has been great as all the cats have also been eating the cat food but they dont touch the peanuts so more for the HH's. We also have a very small one which I am a bit worried about but he comes back every night for his feed.
Remember to check for hedgehogs when starting your seasonal bonfires, they suggest building it as late as possible and gently prodding it before you start, just in case.

Stormdeva, thank you for that link. [sm=bouncy.gif] I have often seen them on pet rescue and animal hospital etc but didnt know exactly where they were. Not too far from me so will hopefully pay a visit!
RE: Hedgehogs like peanuts!
Hi vicki,
How wonderful that someone has remembered to remind us to check the bonfies before we light them. As for the little hedgehog, they like to have bread soaked in some milk. You still might get the cats going for it, but if it is put out late at night, the hedgehogs might get to it before the cats do.
Good luck with preseving your 'hog' family.

RE: Hedgehogs like peanuts!
Dreamcatcher! i too thought they liked milk and bread but NO!!! In everything i have since read up about hedgehogs, it is very bad for them, although they may like it, it apparently gives them tummy upsets!
People in the hedgehog world say to give hedgehog food (yes you can actually get it!) then dog food, then cat food (wet although i give dry as the flies like the wet - yuck) along with seeds, nuts and currants. [sm=1syellow1.gif] milk and bread a defo no no. [sm=nono.gif]
we have since seen a very very small hedgehog coming in the garden, but havent seen it for about a week now. apparently they need to be at least 500g to be able to survive hibernation.
RE: check your bonfires for hedgehogs b4 lighting
in north america people have hedgehogs as domestic pets. one of the best website message boards i know of is (i used to have chinchillas). their knowdledge seems endless, and as people who truly love their hedgies like family they have some great advice and tips (although having them wild here it will all have to be taken in context. i love hedgehogs and can't wait to actually see one in the wild here (i don't imagine there are to many in a city centre though).
