I have five cats and five dogs, mostly they live inside, my question is are cats intuitive and really smart or are they deliberatley difficult and moody?! My dogs all know if I am having a bad moment, but the cats just barge their way in and meow at me all the time, not caring about how I feel. Tiddles will look me right in the eye and let out a long painfully pitched meow, just for the hell of it.

The dogs on the other hand, always anticipate my next move and are all apolagetic if they bark to much, you can tell this by the looks on their faces. Dogs just seem more thoughtful and kind. But my cats are all pushy and me, me, me!

The cats get on well with the dogs but will, often for no apparent reason, swipe them and then glare at them as if they(the dogs) started it!. The poor dogs look bemused and sorry. Really cats have no awareness of others or they do and just don't care!

But I know plenty of you out there will defend the cats as highly gifted and intuitive, I don't deny this, it just seems that they can become very self-absorbed.

Parkinson

I have to admit that I too am a cat lover and in fact even now I have one.

I will not go into many details as I am sure some on HP may do a better job than me. I have already enough thoughts sorting out people's lives as a life coach!

But there is compelling scientific evidence, one powerful article on National Geographic just some time lasy year confirming that cats have a far greater IQ than cats and a far more solid memeory power than dogs. In many ways cats are very clever, extremely clever and smart.

But, and here is the but, they are also very independent. Self-centred? Possibly; I would call them (allow me some life coaching jargon here)... focussed on their goals. They couldn't care a penny if you are feeling down and would love their comforting presence on your lap! Cats will always think "What is in it for me?", "Where is this leading me to?", "Where is my food?"

I tell you my cat could spend hours sitting on the chair, on the bed or just stretched on the floor and being very peaceful and serene about that. The moment you pick him up... he complains, the moment you want to stroke him he protests. But... come feeding time, you feel something soft stroking your ankle, looking at you withntwo gentle tender eyes that say "Please, pretty please.... some food?"

Well... one up for the cats!

Hi there,
heres what I think ...I think that cats are very self involved!! while a dog tries to please his/her owner a cat doesnt much care if the owner is pleased or not!!
and did you know that if you sleep with your cat and you just happen to die in your sleep that probably by morning your cat has had a bit of a nibble out of you! ick
but a dog would never do that unless faced with starvation.... to a dog you are still special to him after you die to a cat your just a snack!!!

Well my goodness! One of my cats does sleep on my bed and I believe would at the least be offended by the lack of warmth I was offering because I had died in the night.
But to her credit she is a friend of mine and will hang out with me.
I do not doubt a cats intelligence level, I also think dogs are very thoughtful as well.

Hi Parkinson,

I have 2 cats aged 18 and 4 who are very intuitive to the familie's emotional needs. If either of my daughters are feeling unwell then the cats take it in turns being with the sick one. The older cat (Angel) even lays on the area that is causing the problem! Gabriel (4yr old) will snuggle up right against you for company.
Gabriel even helped my husband come out of depression a few years ago. Although my husband is not a cat lover the antics of the cat would make him laugh and they would have 'mock' fight s across the carpet which took my husband 'out' of his depression. It was amazing to watch!. They are very much loved members of our family and have personalities of their own (as every cat lover will tell you!!).

In love and light,

RE: Cats and Dogs

Hiya!

I am a cat lover. But nevertheless I’ll try and give you my unbiased opinion about cats and dogs.
Cats are telepathic creatures while dogs rely mostly on your body language. Yes, cats can be quite selfish because they get impatient. If you think something like“oh, gosh, I must feed them in 5 minutes” they’d pick up on it and won’t leave you alone until you do so. They get frustrated the same way a telepathic person get frustrated. He /she thinks “why do they have to say it, when they thought about it 5 minutes ago? Why do they repeat it again?”
Dogs do have some telepathy too. But I would call it sensing. For example our dog knows when his master (my husband) is approaching the house, even if he is a few streets away. But most of the time dogs rely on body language, rather then telepathy.. They are pack animals, while cats are individualists. Dogs tend to look for a leader and obey the leader (hence the phrase “dogsbody”)
Cats recycle our bad energy, just like plants recycle our breath residue. Cats are healers. Dogs give us positiviity an unconditional love. Cats can be a bit choosy and capricious just like Hollywood stars. It’s because they can see through you, dogs can feel negativity and positivity in a person and when positive prevails they will be drawn to this person.
Try to do a simple experiment. Visualise a lovely snack for cats (the one that they like) and see them getting excited. It will prove their telepathic abilities.
I was always fascinated by looking at cats, when they sit and “think” of something. They look like real philosophers thinking about wonders of the Universe. They look so self absorbed .
They might seem selfish all right, but they know that they will return a favour any time when you feel law, depressed or ill. They will cure you.[sm=cat.gif][sm=dogrun.gif]

RE: Cats and Dogs

Hi Parkinson
Cats rule don't they??
I mean dogs need so much attention, but give a cat a bowl of milk and some food and its generally quite happy to leave you alone after, just so long as there is a constant supply of food and milk that is. Cats are just so independent!! They rock and they know it. Its little wonder the ancient Egyptians worshipped them.
I used to have loads of cats but due to my sons allergies I cant have them any more (boo hoo)[sm=mecry.gif]
Yes I know you probs guessed that I am a cat person, but.. my best friend growing up was Judy my mums dog, she was always there when I needed a cuddle or consolation. Also I had a dog called Jacko, and he was a doll. I love all animals, but I love cats independence.

Yes it is indeed funny to see the difference between the human alliances partners, but to me they are both very attached to their humans. I know i see them afther death still hanging around with their human.
Their love is just different because dogs operate in packs and cat's don't.
I am still very proud that dogs and cats still want to be alliegned to us altough humankind did so many stupid things over the century.

RE: Cats and Dogs

Hi

I have 4 cats all have very different personalities.

Felix who is a male of 5 years old is very very intelligent. He sits on my chest in the mornings and taps my face gently to wake me up for his breakfast. If I happen to fall back to sleep he will then go onto the bedside table next to me where he taps at the plant which is there pounding again and again!! Then if I still feel too tired or he is waking me up too early he jumps onto my dressing table waits until I notice him there and starts to knock things off with his paw to get my attention!

I work from home and when I am on the PC and he wants fuss I will know about it! He will usually sit on my keyboard I give him about 15-20mins then lift him down. If that is not enough for him he will sit by my filing cabinet and pull the drawers out one by one and fuffle the papers in there!!!!!!

Also when I go to bed at night he is usually sitting on my side of the bed up by my pillow no room for me! As he understands me all I have to do is say "Felix can you move down to the bottom of the bed please so I can get into bed" he does!! Every time!!!

Mystic his Sister is very laid back, she sees spirit I am sure of it. She watches things in the house that we cannot see. the only time she gets upset is if we go away on holiday. My friend who also has cats and understands comes over not just to feed them but to keep them company. This is ok for the other 3 however she will have the hump for 3 weeks or more after we get back!! We only ever go away for a week, I would worry if we went away for longer!!

Chloe 1 year old little tabby is very sweet and loves to Meditate in the garden and her Brother Picasso loves to sunbathe in the garden.

I love them all to bits and would not be without them they entertain me, lift me when I am sad. I waste far too much time with them everyday playing with them and giving them hugs!! I love them all they are my family, I have had other cats who we have sadly lost on a busy road where I used to live and that has to be the most painful moments in my life.

They bring me joy and happiness 🙂

RE: Cats and Dogs

I adore Cats, for their independence, and their grace and their intelligence.

Dogs get on my nerves, they sometimes seem utterly stupid??? Oh dear, I don't mean to offend dog lovers, but so many times they do things repetitively, and never seem to learn that it is unnessessary.

We have a really horrible little dog next door who barks continually at us when we even go outside into our back yard. He is making all the neighbours very fed up, but, they are all so nice (us too)!!!;) that we don't want to say anything about it [:o] But it is very annoying, and WHY [:@][:@][:@] can't he recognise us and stop that infernal yapping.

And as for the walking and the popper scoppers ugh, the thought of scooping up a mass of steaming excretment and putting it in a bag and then carrying it to the nearest bin is disgusting.

I would have a dog for guarding purposes if I lived in the depths of the country, but there would be enough land for it to do his business without me having to clear up after him.

Cats never mess in their own back yard!!!;) Another plus point. They are subtle, and arrogant, and so peaceful, there is nothing as mesmerising as a cat laid out on its back with paws stretching out and up, totally relaxed and purring slightly. Mmmmmmmmm.

Our cat is a black Tom with yellow eyes, and adores my husband more than anyone else, but he loves us all, and we can tell from the look in his eyes what he thinks of us. He gives us so much, he is an INTERESTING animal, very brave, very loving, very talkative, very everything really.

Apologies to all dog lovers, its cats for us here !!!:D

RE: Cats and Dogs

Have you noticed that men prefer dogs while women prefer cats? (in the majority of cases)... Why is it? I have several thoughts about it:
1. Men prefer a blind adoration and unconditional support, wile women like deep emotional connection and understanding.
2. Women have better psychic abilities then men as men represent logic and mind, wile women represent emotions and nature(ther are more whitches then there are magicians). My cat used to follow me around and wanted to be with me despite that my husband used to make more fuss of him, while I didn't have much tme for it. But the cat just wanted to be with me. I'd just look at him at he would come to me any time (leaving my poor husband behind[:'(][&:]).

What are your thoughts about it?
(no offence at any time meant to our men and especially to you Parkinson. Having 5 dogs and 5 cats.. it's already making your an extraodinary man. Just how do you cope with all this lot???[sm=cat.gif][sm=cat.gif][sm=cat.gif][sm=cat.gif][sm=cat.gif][sm=dogrun.gif][sm=dogrun.gif][sm=dogrun.gif][sm=dogrun.gif][sm=dogrun.gif]).

Gillyanne, you crack me up! The picture yhou paint about your nextdoor neighbours dog is true! Thats just what little dogs will do even to their owners!
I twas intersting how you said that you might consider getting a dog if you lived in the depths of the country, well I do live there and I thought I would only really need a dog if I were to live in a city. All my dogs are not for protection, but, well I don't know really except that I like dogs.

Tanita, I think it is intertesting what you say about men preferring dogs and women cats, who knows. But I am definatley a dog person. I do not know if it really has any thing to do with what sex you are, but more what personality type. My dogs and I all regulary go on bush walks and drives in the car. I am a real mountain person and love being high up a mountain and the only person I really like to share my space with is my dogs. They have been to mnay remote places with me and all never complain or interfer with my alone time.

Tanita

oh you are sweet in your descriptions but I am glad that you made some exceptions for some of us guys who love cats more than dogs and who love feelings and emotions just as much as much as logic and reasoning. However, there is a sting in the tail/tale (eeh, play on words here!) as cats are far more logic and rational than dogs. So in a sense most men are possibly loving the wrong pet. What do you think?

Anyhow, for me, Vive le chat!

RE: Cats and Dogs

Hello!

I have to say i'm a real doggy person myself and i'm soooooooo sorry to say this but have always disliked cats Oooops......however i have a wee question? why if cats are so intuitive do they not pick up on me disliking them??? [sm=scratchchin.gif] as soon as they set eyes on me they follow me around, brush up next to me meeeaaaow sweetly, this will really get me into trouble with my neighbours one day as they follow me home, one used to shoot straight into my house like lightning and hide under my bed where i couldn't reach him! once i left a window opened (1st floor aptmt) and a kittie thought he'd just come in and make himself at home! the cheek of it - do they like me or are they just teasing me? i went back to an old house that i lived in about 6 months after i'd left and they still recognise me and come running across the road to greet me ha ha! i must say that i've softened up to them now and i'll give them a wee stroke and can i say......actually like them....Oooh i've said it! ......would prefer if they stayed kittens though [sm=rollaugh.gif]

RE: Cats and Dogs

Hi all,

Ooooh, my male cat Cosmo is just the opposite of selfish. He is so caring, he always knows when I am not feeling well and gives me a cuddle (yes he puts his arms round me and clings on!) or snuggles up to me on the bed. My girl cat Molly is not quite as perceptive but she does check to see if I am OK when she notices I am not my normal self. They always come and see me as soon as I am through the door from work, and not because they want food, just because they want to see me!

Shelli, I am allergic to cats but am OK with mine - Devon Rex, they are known to be hypoallergenic. Some people still have reactions, but most are OK. Maybe your son could try meeting a Devon Rex or Cornish Rex to see if he could cope with their fur?

RE: Cats and Dogs

Hi Parkinson,

What a cat clan you have, I only have 1 cat. She did have a sister but she had to be put to sleep some time ago. I must admit I think cats are intuative, I say this because Pepper used to always wait for me at a certain time each day when I finished work. She would sit on our coffee table facing the door and as soon as I walked through she would just look at me saying sit down, I wish to sit on your lap and cuddle you. She would also tell me when I had done enough drawing or what ever by jumping onto my lap and just looking at me with those big soppy eyes of hers.

I also think, infact believe that dogs are very tuned into their owners. I will tell you why. Over the last few years I have ben very ill, infact in a wheel chair at one point for several months, and my dogs have been a great source of comfort. Merlin especially does not like me to be out of his site, where as Codey is happy if she knows where I am. Well one day an incident happened whilst my wife was out. I have a condition which when I have an occurence drastically affects my ability to walk and move about. My wife had ben gone quite a while and I was out back with dogs. Had just walked through to living room when I could feel my back going and indeed my legs began to give way as I reached the window. I do not know how Merlin knew to come into the room at that precise moment but he did and he immediately placed himself underneath me, so that I would not hit the floor. He then held me for some 10 minutes with his legs locked, holding 14stone up, until wife came in. Once she was in, he very gently eased me down to the floor. Both of them then placed themself to either side and stayed there until I came round some time later. I hope this has answered your question?

RE: Cats and Dogs

Thats an amazing story spiriteagle! How wonderful! 😀

Did you see a programme not too long ago about particular dogs being trained to help their owners when they have epileptic fits? It was absolutely amazing! they train the dogs to know when the owner is about to have a fit, this is before the owner has any idea that they are about to have one, this prepares the owner lay on their bed or be in a safe place whilst its happening, whilst it's happening they place themselves on top of the owner to stop them moving about too much until it's stopped. There's a lot more too it but it was the most incredible thing i've ever seen in a dog - i thought guide dogs for the blind were amazing until i saw this!

Hope all is well with you now spiriteagle or at least better?

Love, little b

Oh give me a dog anyday. Cat’s never really belong to you, they only stay as long as they are getting everything they want. A dog is loyal.

It’s some years since we lost our beloved Guinness. He was only a Heinz 57 but what a character. He understood everything we said to him. For instance…..

Our two sons, who were about 10 and 5 years old at the time, had managed to get hold of one of those disgusting joke plastic poo things. They were discussing how they would leave it on the lounge carpet and when Dad came home he would think Guinness had had an accident. They placed it carefully and disappeared outside to play. Guinness was listening to all this. Half an hour later, when Dad’s car pulled onto the drive, Guinness walked over to the plastic poo, picked it up and carried outside as if to say I’m not taking the blame for that, so there!

RE: Cats and Dogs

Hi all,

What amazes me about this topic, is that I've gone through a variety of emotions reading the posts. The idea that my beloved little cat Pippa, who was run over and killed when I was 14 much to my devastation, could still be around me made my eyes hurt and a tear or two suddenly appeared.

One or two things have made me laugh out loud. I recognise cat characteristics pointed out here, where I've thought, yes, they can be little gits, but I love them. I like the idea that they are focused on their goals! Brilliant!

I've been amazed and touched at the storied relayed here. So whether it's cats or dogs, our lives seem to be positively enriched by them, mostly.

I just love cats. I would never own millions of them, but whenever I'm out and I see one..... I just can't resist them, I have to go over and talk to them or stroke them.

One of mine had to be de-flead last night. She must of heard us talking about it, because she hid under a chair.

I love the fact that in the main, they are arrogant. If you are reading a newspaper spread on the floor, they come along and either sit on it or start playing with the pages. You could be playing a game of Monopoly and they will walk straight across the board. What's that all about??? Why not walk round? What are they trying to say? If I'm in bed and I don't want them coming in, they will scratch at the door, pick at the carpet (gits), come running in if I have to go to the toilet. I dump them in a different room and they race me back to my bedroom. I give up in the end. They go all purrrrryyyyy and take up all the room on the bed. How naughty.

I don't ever want life without cats.

Tiger.

Hi Butterfly,

Sorry no didn't see the program but can imagine how interesting it must have been. Dogs are amazing creatures and I believe they are mans best friend, as we should be their's. I am better and things are looking positive and Merlin still follows me everywhere, but then again I wouldn't want him to change really, scoundral that he is.:D
