Hi, as some of you may already know, I have recently moved house and although my 12 year old neutered male cat has settled in quite quickly he has developed an unusual 'thing' since being here lol.
At the top of the stairs there is a little landing that leads to the bathroom and then you go up a step for the main landing. He races up the stairs, screeches to a halt on the little landing and then goes absolutely crazy chasing his tail, to the extent he almost falls down the stairs! Would anyone know why he is doing this?

My cat has a mad half-hour every day. It involves running up the stairs, jumping onto the top of the railing of the landing and walking along it. I daren't look at her as she seems to get nuttier if I do! Quite often I hear a thump as she topples off. Sometimes she falls the wrong way and goes over the edge towards the stairs. As I'm not looking I don't know how far she falls. Once she has calmed down I give her a quick check and she's ok. Most cats I have owned have always had a mad half-hour, usually just racing round the house. One used to run up the curtains though, that was entertaining!!:D The curtains had perferations in them and moonlight shone through them at night! It might be just that he's letting off a bit of steam. As long as nothing else changes with him I wouldn't worry.

Sounds like he's found a 'new toy' for himself.

Our brood have little quirks like that.

Would anyone know why he is doing this?

If he's started this since moving house, then yes. He's attention seeking because he feels that his previous freedoms have been limited.

You need to find out how to let him decide what he wants and get control back. Once he has his confidence again that he can do what he wants, this behaviour will go away.

We go through this with ours when it was thick with snow. They hate doing their in the snow, so it was their way of making sure we knew.

HTH,
Myarka.

Thank you all for your replies. Now I know WHY he is doing it then he can carry on until it's not so much fun for him anymore:).

Both of my cats have always done this, I think it's just like humans.. you know when you just have one of those crazy days when you do your 'happy' dance or randomly give your friend or partner a hug, just because you can??? No... just me then...

Horses do it too.. it's like lambs that have their mad hoppity skippity moments in the fields.. I think that animals just don't grow out of their 'young' behaviour.

I would say that he is actually perhaps really excited about the move and is showing you by going a tad loopy for a bit.. He is HAPPPEEEEEE!!
