Hi,

can someone please tell me the signs of a bitch going into season?

Bella is going to be 10 months old this month and as yet has not had her first season, however im wondering if she is about to.
She seems very clingy (more so than usual) and also her tummy seems bitty....swollen? Shes drinking LOADS but not eating as much as she normally does.[&:]

We have two male dogs - so i have separated them, they are to be neutered as because of bellas heart murmur the vet doesn't want to spay her but they seem to be...''sniffing'' around er..'down there' when she lies down and also when she gets up they go and sniff where she was sitting....[:'(]

I have not spotted any bleeding or any sort of discharge so im really not sure? Ive only had male dogs in the past! 😮

Does anyone know if this sounds like her first season? Or what the signs would be?

thank you so much

Fiona & Bella

Hiya Fiona

Does anyone know if this sounds like her first season?

It would most certainly sound like it...just remember if it is...she will be as eager to get to the 'fellas' as the 'fellas' will be to get to her[&:]

luv & peace

Fiona, afraid i cant help with the question but hope all is well with lovely little Bella. [sm=dogrun.gif]
You had better get your boys done pretty quick though, as it only takes a minute, and i am sure a pregnancy would be very detrimental to her health.

Hi Vicki,

Not seen you in a while, hope your well.

Thanks for your imput, like i was saying to stormdeva im pretty sure she is in heat, now im to wait until after her first season to take her to the vet and see if he will consider spaying her but to be honest i dont want her done anymore even if he would (which is unlikely) Shes going to be 9 months this month (they didnt think she's live more than 9 weeks!!) i dont want to put her in any danger, am going to ask about the injections you can get but first have to take toby and :D;);)rascal for a little visit!

Hi Fiona,

I agree with the others, having done an animal course it does sound like she is showing the signs of her first season. I would recommend that you do not let her get pregnant as she is so young it could have serious complications if anything went wrong. I am a great believer of letting a first season go by without letting the bitch get pregnant. I also believe that unless you are a breeder then one should not let pups be produced. You sound like a responsible owner, so I hope that this is the case. I also hope that she settles down, but what she might do is create a birthing area for herself, which is definite sign that she is in heat. Do not be alarmed by this as it is a natural things for a bitch to do. Also bitches also sometimes have a phatom pregnancy, as this is the body's way of preparing for the real; thing. Keep me posted on how she is getting along and all the best for the future.[sm=cat.gif]
