Hiya...I'm pretty sure this website has been mentioned on HP before, but I just thought I'd post it again for those who've never heard of it. It's a freeconcomy site where you hook up with people in your area to exchange skills, tools ect...well worth joining esp in this day and age when money is so tight, it kinda brings a bit of community spirit back too

I joined it a few years ago too. I've twice had computer help from a young man who used to live near me. The second time was when I bought a new laptop and he set it all up for me, transferring stuff from the old one and setting up the new wireless connection. All I could do for him was offer a bowl of home made soup! I've not been called upon either to share any skills but would be delighted to do so. I've been getting quite a few emails recently as well - not a bother at all as they are usually info about community events. For example, quite near me this coming Sunday is a freebie event in a local park to raise awareness about the plight of the bees.

Hiya Sunny, Home made soup sounds to me like an ace thing to offer back....but you've hit on an issue I've got...I'd feel guilty if I couldn't offer something back there and then...I use freecycle often and I find it a tottal benefit...you offer something someone takes it away..someone else offers somthing and if you're lucky you get it...but with this...you're littually asking for favors off strangers...thats what I can't get my head around....is it just me:confused::o xxx

I felt the same but it's supposed to be OK. I couldn't think of anything else to offer this guy and he said he didn't want anything anyway, cos he was literally helping me 'just for the love of it.' I don't know what I would have done without him; it would have cost a fortune if I'd had to pay to have it done.

Edit to add that I've just had a circular email from someone who happens to live quite near me asking if anyone is interested in getting together to do a big supermarket shop every so often. As I don't have a car this would be great for me.

Have just joined this, what a good site, I also use freecycle, but have given more than I have taken.

I joined the website and have found it helpful. When I was training in hypnotherapy I offered free sessions to the freeconomy community - I had loads of people interested and got lots of guinea pigs to practice on. It was a great help to me and it helped them too. I didn't ask for anything in return although some people offerred me apples from their allotment etc. which was nice of them.

Happy to come back to this thread for an update. Since I last posted I have lent some garden tools to a young man who was helping to renovate a garden for a formerly homeless person and I lent my binoculars to a young lady whose sister was singing at the Royal Albert Hall. In both cases the items were returned promptly with thanks. It made me feel great to be helping someone else. Apparently the idea is really NOT to pay back the favour that someone does for you but to help other people. Since I joined members have started to send out more emails to everyone so I get some really interesting things in my inbox. It feels like a good trustworthy community.
