See its a word game that each one you get right. 20 grams of rice is donated to third world countries.
Really? I will try that. If it would help feed the hungry then I am all for it.

Why don't they just give them the rice?
I agree with you Healistic - and why can't I find anything about the organisation on their website? There is no charity number (if it is British) or an organisation address - unless it is very small print! How do we know the UN are getting the donation?
Very strange site.
It isn't 20 grams of rice per correct question but 20 grains.
However I cannot see how the originator of the site is benefiting financially from anything that he is doing.
If you click on the link to Poverty.com it will give you the name of John Breen. Don't know if it is the same "John Breen" but if you Google the name there appears to be a ?musician/comedian of that name but this may just be coincidence.
Agree with Healistic and Jabba, why not just give the rice?
Am going to check this out more fully....nosey old cow that I am.....do they ask for email addy's or anything that they can sell on or summit?
Off to check some more.

Who pays for the donated rice?
The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at FreeRice.
If FreeRice has the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?
FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 20 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.
Does FreeRice make any money from this?
No, it does not. FreeRice runs the site at no profit.
Copied and pasted from the FAQ bit of the site.
It is fun to play for a wee while, pit it isn't grams per question but grains. I guess this has to do with who they can get to advertise and how much money the advertising generates.
From what I can see the ads appear American based as some have dollars signs in them.

The meanings behind some of the words are American too.
However, I donated 1000 grains of rice with:
VOCAB LEVEL: 38
YOUR BEST LEVEL: 38
Make that 2000 grains with:
YOUR BEST LEVEL: 39
Just couldn't quite get up to 40.
P.S. one of my favourites had to be:
CORRECT!
sesquipedalian = using long words
Make that 2000 grains with:
YOUR BEST LEVEL: 39Just couldn't quite get up to 40.
Well done, Energylz.
I could only spare 3 minutes. And I am ashamed to admit that I only reached 42 twice and slipped back to 40.
Managed only 300 grains, but that's 300 more than nothing!
Thanks to caring soul for a hazardously addictive game!
Regards.

I liked this site a lot, mainly because I need to brush up on my vocabulary and this is a fun way to do it. I got to 43 (400 grains of rice) but had to go. What's nice is that the site will remember where you left off it you want it to. 🙂
Okay, another 600 grains on the way. It's hard work this time of night - that's my excuse anyway :023:
:nature-smiley-008:Thank you for this site caringsoul, which hopefully improves my English...just wish the rice would be brown because it is soooo much healthier.
I found this site too and must say that it is a little addictive. Was playing on it while I should have been working :021: It certainly keeps the brain ticking over.
