Anyone who pays duel fuel to British Gas can get either free loft insulation or cavity wall. Apparently it used to be only if you were over a certain age or if you were on benefits but up till a certain date (sorry can't recall) anyone can have it free. They have already been to assess my son's house and he is having the loft done, pretty good for a utility company for a change eh 🙂

Hi Jeannie,

I agree it is good that it is possible to get free insulation... however... (sorry...) we have just had a real pain in the posterior time with BG. They turned up late for the appointment without the correct material for our loft. They had to reschedule for the following week - meanwhile all of our clutter was blocking up our bedrooms and office - they turned up and did the job on the Tuesday - hurrah! BUT they didn't remove the original insulation and put so much down and across the ceiling joists (instead of between so that chipboard can be tacked to the joints and enable storage) that we now can't have a floor put down. They knew it was what we wanted to do because my husband had mentioned that we needed the microfibre to be laid down and not blown when they turned up the previous week, as otherwise our stuff wouldn't fit back up in the loft on top of the flooring.

A week later we are still surrounded by our cr*p - BG have refused to admit responsibility for what has happened - they said that they laid down the right amount as per regulations and one of the installers claimed he had told me I couldn't have flooring put down (he didn't obviously) - however upon measuring it they have laid down too much. We now have to go up and sort it out. We spent two whole days calling them and waiting for them to call back - we rang half hourly for one whole morning because they kept saying someone would call us right back and didn't. They refused to let us talk to the manager and when the manager did call back he said it wasn't their problem and that he would get a surveyor to ring back. We haven't heard a thing since.

We appreciate it's for free because we are on tax-credits but regardless of this they are still getting funded by the government (and we do pay taxes!) - so we are incredibly pee'd off with the whole thing.

Hopefully this is a one-off case - needless to say we are going to make a formal complaint..
