I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I needed a place to rant ...

I've just been watching Game of Thrones - on DVD, series 3, Jon and the wildings climbing the Ice Wall. TV and film makers consult experts on all kinds of things, so why, when characters are climbing, do they all go upward on the same rope? Why do they not think climbing is worth asking someone who knows about it?

Only one person climbs at a time. The others belay themselves to the rock face, so they are safe. That way, if s/he falls s/he can be held. What's the point of having a rope if all it does is endanger the other climbers more?

Okay - I'm not really expecting a good answer here. But thanks for letting me rant.

Seriously, I don't have a TV licence or watch live TV, only catch-up on the internet with things of any real interest. Gives time to do real life things. 😉

Me neither. But we do watch DVDs occasionally (more in the winter) when it's something I'm enjoying. And I am enjoying most of Game of Thrones. Most.

Further to Game of Thrones - this from the Guardian. Game of Thrones Monopoly!
I don't know if this is a good idea or an appalling one. I certainly couldn't have thought it up!

Likewise we watch DVD's too, though don't generally go for these 'latest craze' type of shows. Seems like Game of Thrones only came about a few months ago and already they're on Season 5????!? "Cashing in" is the phrase that comes to mind. 😀

Must chip in at this point and say I love Game of Thrones. There's a shocking amount of sex and violence but it's fabulous entertainment, intricate plots, brilliant characters (lots of them), decent budgets and proper acting. It's not throwaway TV - you have to concentrate.

There are 5 books in the series far and two more planned but George Martin the author takes about five years to produce each book so maybe the TV show will have to take a break next year.

The books have been known for much longer, however. The first one was published in 1996 - won the Locus Award and the Hugo in 1997 and was nominated for World Fantasy and Nebula Awards the same year. Anyone who reads fantasy will have known them for a long time.
As for people who don't read fantasy - well, there's no real hope for them, is there? 😉

And George Martin isn't well, so let's hope he gets to finish the series.

Sex and violence - yes, isn't there? Not that I mind either except I think a lot of it is gratuitous (and a lot of full-frontal and every other view of the women but we've yet to see a penis - even when it's chopped off and in a box).

I've just downloaded the first episode of Game of Thrones to see what I think of it. I usually end up watching stuff months (or years) later after the hype has died down. Have also downloaded the first episode of The Sopranos. Did the same with True Detective and Breaking Bad, thought both were excellent...

I found the first two episode ok, but by the third one I was hooked. I'm now up to date and waiting for the new series to arrive next year.
Crowan, it's called added entertainment 😉

Yes! They have to make things more exciting than they would be in real life 🙂

They also made it 'more exciting' than the book which has the climbing done correctly. I suspect it is simply because (1) the directors and script writers knew nothing about climbing and (2) they therefore made the assumption that no one else did either.

In my opinion, it would have made better viewing to see it done in a sensible way - and still go wrong, as it can - than to see it in a way that makes anyone watching able to think, "well, that was stupid of them!"
