I miss journalistic standards; so many people blindly pass on unverified information; and unfettered ideologues intentionally distort information.

I am part of a Facebook group "Verify Sources Before You Post," whose members check out attributions that posted on Facebook. It is an overwhelming task to ask those who post for their sources, because there are so many mis-attributions.

How much time do you spend verifying what you see on the internet? How do you go about it? What resources have you found reliable?

Hello VRSSS
welcome here.
Internet has provided everybody with a platform to speak and express themselves from. It is very ;likely they are going to say stuff that they know- regardless of it being true or false.
Verifying what we read on internet? Personally, I don't . There is all kinds of stufff from utter gems to utter twaddle. Too much to sift through, let alone verify the content.
I don't worry too much about verifying. There is always an inner feeling that knows it better than verifications of sources and authenticity of the content..somehow.

Internet is like the world itself. The rules are pretty much the same. Some things ring right some don't, some you recognise as false some as bull****, some very sincere, some down right grab your heart and being.
I use internet information as a reference, guideline rather than something to adhere to strictly. I tend to think most people do it that way.

You're right, too many people do just read what they see, believe it, and then pass it on.
The worst ones I've seen on facebook are those that go around telling people that facebook are changing something and that their personal details will be sold, or made available to the public etc. or that people should click on various options to protect themselves or to stay in touch with themselves. It's amazing that people don't check these things out first, or even know that facebook will always notify all people of any changes before they happen. They're mostly viral and sometimes disruptive... tantamount to being spam.

Of course not everyone has the time to check everything out, so I'm sure we all get caught out occasionally even if we try to be vigilant... me personally, I do tend to check things out for myself first when I can.

There are certain sites I am always sceptical about. Sadly a lot of the posts on here about 'miracle' cures' etc tend to come form sites I don't trust.

I always distrust anything the Daily Mail says.

So I start off sceptical of most information that gets posted. I assume its incorrect unless it has the right sort of look about it (has references I can check for instance) or actually makes sense compared with what I know already.

I don't try to verify everything I read or see. But if I think its worth posting on then I will.

I know that makes me sound rather cynical - but there is SUCH a lot of rubbish on the internet......................
