When communities were much more isolated and self-reliant than modern society is, shamans played an itegral part in their cultures, performing numerous & specific duties. They practised healing in cases of sickness and injury, but they were not specifically healers. Although they communicated with ancestors, spirits & gods, they were not exclusively priests, & while they offered wise conunsel to their communities, they were not solely sages. (Wise man) Rather, they fulfilled a combination of these roles & others besides...
The fundamental role of the shaman was to act as an intermediary in relating to the other spirits of the earth, the animals, the land, the rain, the crops & so on.
Traditional shamanism still exists in many places in the world, especially where the old cultures remain strong. It is not uncommon for people to seek the asistance of a shaman in the lands of the Arctic, China or Tibet...but in 'our' modern world there is still a place for shamanism on a personal level. Shamanism is a way to find our place in the universe, by embarking upon a shamanic journey to other levels of consciousness, the modern shaman can reach depths of insight that can lead to personal growth & enlightenment.
