Hi

I am new to Shamanism and i do love the drum although i have had little experience with this. However being a vegetarian soon hopefully to being a vegan how can i justify using a drum which is made out of the animal? I would very much appreciate your view on this and if theres anyone that is a vegetarian and how they see it.

Brightest Blessings 🙂

Hi Magikeyes

I guess you don't have to mistreat or kill an animal to make a drum from its skin; ideally you'd probably let it die naturally beforehand. I don't know how realistic that would be but I think thats the only way you'd be able to justify it to yourself on a personal level. In reality, the animal skin is a by product of an animal killed for its meat so you'd probably have to accept that.......or make your own drum!!

Hi Magikeyes

This is an interesting ethical question. I'm a newbie here but am loving healthy pages forum so far. I hope you don't mind my chipping in.

I am a vegan and have been veggie since I was about 9 so I hope I can offer you a vegan viewpoint.

As a vegan, I would say that raising an animal to kill for human benefit is something I cannot buy into. As your wanting a drum is just that, want, not need in the truest sense of the word, I think your veganism will conflict with investing in a goat skin drum.

There are vegan drums on the market, and I have read that they have been found very authentic sounding. Just Google vegan drums 🙂

In the end, you can buy whatever you want, your veganism is a choice not a creed, but I hope my thoughts help you with the choice making.

I hope this is helpful.

Could the goat be a milker that has died of old age? Obviously you'd have to do quite a lot of detective work to track down a source, but there must be lots of small goat dairies that might help?

I use Remo Fiberskyn drums which are vegan. They actually have many benefits over the natural hide drums as they are more durable, consistent in all temperatures (hide is very affected by the weather, damp or heat), light to work with and have the most amazing harmonics when you hit the sweet spot. I can wholly recommend them. You can find them all over the internet for purchase. I have varying sizes. a Remo 16" Buffalo drum will cover ceremonial, healing, meditation and journeying uses. 22" are great for journeying with large groups and the smaller sizes (12"-14") are useful if you plan on travelling a lot as they fit easily into a suitcase.. hope this helps.
