The way I see it, the role of a modern day shaman is;

1: to always be in touch with the present and embrace the future whilst at the same time never forgetting the past.

2: accept good and bad as an equally valied constructive force.

3: open eyes, minds, and hearts.

4: help people help themseves.

5: understand death.

6: practice patience.

7: communicate in a modern way.

8: maintain a connection with nature.

9: see the good in every one and everything.

10: incorporate ancient alternative medecine with the modern and conventional .

11: know oneself.

These are but a few things involved in the role of a shaman, not necessarily in that order.
I could be here all night if I were to mention even half of it!
I'm actually tempted to go on but...
In my experience shamanism came to me rather than the other way around, as I was blessed with many lessons in life that prepared me for my calling. there was even a time when I was convinced God hated me so much that I attempted suicide twice! and twice God made it diamond clear that I will not succeed as there was a duty to perform later on in life. In fact, the only thing keeping me from total breakdown and alive is shamanism.
Now however when I meet people going through similar experiences, everything that happened to, and around me makes complete sense and makes it all worthwhile.

If you are thinking of practicing shamanism, it might be worth bearing in mind that all the help you need will almost miraculously come to you! provided you know what you need and ask for it, as one great man once said, ask and ye shall be given, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. it feels really strange at the beginning but later on you get a bit used to it.
anyway, the key to success is good intent, dedication, patience and an open mind. your role will become more apparent as you go along, as everyone has diferent roles to play.
